To think the sonographer could be wrong?

I’ve been told girl but I just feel like it’s protruding too much? AIBU to question this or do I just trust what the trained sonographer says? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Any parents with girls out here who had similar potty shots? I don’t know whether to book another scan somewhere else

So sorry for your losses.
Ex midwife sonographer here. Remember the picture you have is just one frame whereas the sonographer will have looked at the anatomy through several slices in real time. Think of it a bit like choosing the one frame that is in focus from the several that make up a “live” picture on your phone.
So it is not really possible to give an accurate opinion from that one frame but the sonographer had the benefit of the overall image.
It looks like the sonographer will have had very good views from that image so I would be surprised if they are wrong.
Personally I would never say unless I was sure and was never wrong. However I do know sometimes they are wrong for whatever reason.
But my advice would be to focus on the joy of a viable pregnancy and try to play down sex predictions with your son. The reality is that young children build up an image of a sibling who will be a fellow toddler playmate and soon get bored of a crying baby that doesn’t do much, the sex will be immaterial at that point (for your son).

My DD referred to my bump exclusively as “my brother” despite us telling her repeatedly it could be either. She was so insistent we started to believe her. Out came DD2. DD1 forgot all about her brother and was just so happy to hold her little sister’s hand.

Scans can be wrong. It’s rare. By a few white bits just in case :)

Nothankyov · 23/08/2025 22:44

I have to agree with a PP. At 15 weeks their penis is generally very visible. I had 2 boys and a girl and didn’t want to know the sex but it was so clear they were boys. Our girls we thought maybe it’s a girl because we didn’t see anything but we weren’t sure!

Why does it matter? Had you considered not knowing btw? Much more fun!

Why is it more fun? You find out in the end either way.

I know I'm not the only one who cannot make anything out in that scan shot.

Same! Never have been able to ‘read them’!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 23/08/2025 22:40

Well it's either male or female.

Since it's never completely accurate I don't know why people bother trying to find out.

MeTooOverHere · 23/08/2025 22:39

What is it supposed to be? Ultrasounds are black magick.

BlankBlankBlank14 · 23/08/2025 22:35

@cc99xo how old is your son? Old enough to explain it’s “probably” a girl?

Mamabear487 · 23/08/2025 22:33

1000% a girl. I’ve had both and can definitely tell when it’s a boy…

cc99xo · 23/08/2025 22:32

@nomaswell in that case my son definitely would be over the moon 😂

What for?
You'll find out in five months.

I didn't know what any of mine were.

Why does it matter what you did?

OP doesn't have to make the same decision.

Noshadelamp · 23/08/2025 22:29

I was told that if they think it's a big it's pretty much certain, but if they think it's a girl it still might be a boy.

Me too! Baby t-rex

Does it matter?

Time to manage expectations with your son - I'm surprised they agreed to him being present.

It wasn't a NHS scan. Those types of places tend to encourage mums to bring family members, including children.

MargaretThursday · 23/08/2025 22:29

If it was a private scan especially to find out boy/girl then I suspect it would put them under pressure to give a definite answer, which means that they may be less accurate.

Have to wait and see.

If you're not confident then just make the point to your DS that the baby is probably a girl but if it's another boy you hope he's as wonderful as his big brother. I would trust a professional sonographer though and there's plenty opportunity for a later scan if you still have doubts.

I love this. Thank you so much :)

Ik someone who was told a girl bought everything girly. Child was born a boy they had to send family out to change all the pink clothing. It does and can happen

cc99xo · 23/08/2025 22:26

@IntoTheFringeAt peek-a-baby they were doing a deal , if you have 3 early reassurance scans you get a free gender scan. My little boy was also wanting to come to a scan, which they allow at this clinic, so just made sense to make use of the offer of a free scan :)

Our highly 'qualified' sonographer told us we were having a boy at 22 weeks! Good job we didn't paint the nursery blue is all I can say......

Cookingupmyfirstbornson · 23/08/2025 22:24

Get a nipt or gender blood test

@PamIsAVolleyballChampActually this was a private ultrasound at peek-a-baby purely to find out the sex.

@cc99xo som’t stress about what people are saying here. They’ll look for literally anything to pick on. I think it’s perfectly fine to take your DS to your ultrasounds and that I’m sure it was a special moment. Even if it’s not a girl, he’ll get over it.
