To think the sonographer could be wrong?

I’ve been told girl but I just feel like it’s protruding too much? AIBU to question this or do I just trust what the trained sonographer says? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Any parents with girls out here who had similar potty shots? I don’t know whether to book another scan somewhere else

To think the sonographer could be wrong?

Was it a professional sonographer? we went to a similar place with our first baby and none of the staff were actually trained sonographer, they just knew how to use the machine. The sonographer at the hospital then told us that they actually don’t like those private scan places as they can miss anomalies which then have to be disclosed at 20 weeks. With our second we went to an IVF / fertility clinic for reassurance scan instead.

Either way, both places accurately predicted the gender of both our babies and both were born healthy.

All the best to you, I don’t think it’s abnormal to get early scans done at all especially if you’ve experienced multiple losses. I’m surprised you’re not getting more through the NHS?

I also suffered with hyperemesis with both my babies and findi my out their sex was the only thing that got me through it, as I felt I had a connection to them & they were a real person vs an unknown. It’s different for everyone, but I understand wanting to find out the sex. Especially if there is an older sibling.

What for?
You'll find out in five months.

I didn't know what any of mine were.

So, what ? No-one else is allowed to want to know ?

Encrochat · 24/08/2025 07:00

Term potty shot makes me feel a bit sick

Worry about? What could there be to worry about with regard to the baby’s sex?

I think it was just a passing reference to the fact that her son is desperate for a baby sister. Not sure why the OP is getting such a rough time on here, given what she’s been through.

It does amaze me in this day and age of equal opportunities etc that people are so keen to find out whether the baby is a boy or girl.
The twenty weeks scan is for abnormalities and not just looking the presence or not of a penis. It isn't that long ago that we weren't allowed to know.

It wasn’t a twenty week scan, it was private.

IntoTheFringe · 23/08/2025 22:22

Yet you have prioritised finding out the sex 2-3 weeks before this so it must be a big deal to you? Assuming all is well at the anomaly scan I don't understand why you can't be excited to have the sex confirmed (as much as they ever will confirm it) that day too. You're not going to get a definitive answer asking here.

if you have read OP and the updates as to the trauma she has been through, the worries centred around the anomaly scan should be obvious.

Idk I’ve heard stories about getting the sex wrong at 15/16 weeks. Hopefully I’ve got nothing to worry about :)

What is there to worry about?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 24/08/2025 06:20

cc99xo · 23/08/2025 21:49

@PamIsAVolleyballChampActually this was a private ultrasound at peek-a-baby purely to find out the sex.

I don't understand why you would pay for a private scan two weeks earlier than your anomaly scan just to find out the sex if you're not even going to believe what the professional tells you.

For what it's worth, in all my scans I lay there listening to the consultant saying, "these are the two kidneys" and "these are the four chambers of the heart" and all I could see was blobs.

Why worry? What's the big issue and why would it be a worry if they got the sex wrong.(apart from over investing in who your baby is at this point)

@laclochette
Clearly that’s not what I meant. I wouldn’t take him to an NHS scan as, firstly children aren’t allowed, and secondly they look for very important things - I should know, considering I found out about my son’s severe disability at one! There’s nothing wrong with taking my son to a harmless, enjoyable 10 minute gender scan that encourages you to bring family members and gives cute little 4D images and teddy bears :)

I received very unexpected bad news at a private scan (heartbeat had stopped) having had a great 12 week NHS one. I know statistically that’s unusual and I don’t want to bring down the mood. But worth bearing in mind that even these ‘fun’ private scans aren’t always straightforward. I’m certainly glad my son wasn’t present at mine.

Well it would only be a lovely little boy if they are wrong.

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 24/08/2025 05:35

You could ring them and ask. I'm sure they wouldn't mind. or bring it to a doctor and see what they think. Your next scan should confirm it

ArtfulPinkBird · 24/08/2025 05:33

It's expensive, but if you paid for private NIPT testing, you could find out the gender with 99%+ accuracy. I had NIPT as the hospital couldn't get a nuchal fold measurement at my 12 week scan so we went private for the testing and they were able to confirm the sex when the results came through.

PollyBell · 24/08/2025 05:30

Wouldn't it be simpler to wait a few months and just see what the baby is then why the need to know now?

KoalaBlue1 · 24/08/2025 05:28

My daughter in law had a lovely Baby Shower for her unborn baby ‘girl’
2 months later baby was born … surprise it’s a boy.
This was only a few years ago.

The waiting and not knowing build expectation but do not put expectation on the child, who arrives as they are - a boy or a girl. It's a joyous surprise. Knowing the sex throughout pregnancy means there is no excitement in the arrival and if the sex is a disappointment that can affect the pregnancy.

I know someone who’s son turned out to be a daughter and it caused a lot of issues with PND and so because she had this expectation and she’d named him etc.
I don’t see any harm in knowing if you want to, but people need to be aware that they can make mistakes.
i didn’t find out with any of mine because I was so paranoid after her experience, I never regretted not knowing, tho with my last baby it might have made naming her easier as we could NOT agree on a boys name, had we known she was a girl we could have saved a lot of time. 😂

TrixieFatell · 24/08/2025 01:49

I've been at two births where the expected baby girl came with a surprise package. Scans are never 100 percent, I really like the way someone worded it to prepare your son just in case.

Hope your anomaly scan goes smoothly, I can imagine it must be an anxious time given your previous experience.

I thought it was a baby T-Rex's head.

@IntoTheFringeAt peek-a-baby they were doing a deal , if you have 3 early reassurance scans you get a free gender scan. My little boy was also wanting to come to a scan, which they allow at this clinic, so just made sense to make use of the offer of a free scan :)

Jesus Christ, I don’t normally comment on threads, but you’ve had as rough of a ride with comments as the woman who cheats on her perfectly nice husband yesterday!! Nothing wrong with taking your son and nothing wrong with wanting to know the gender!! I’m no sonographer, but looks like a girl to me. Could always book another though if it would put your mind at ease - I had loads of scans with my daughter! I did a sneak peak blood test at 6 weeks too - what would the soapbox posters think of that! Shock horror! Sorry to hear about your losses. Good luck with your pregnancy!

StrongbutTired00 · 24/08/2025 00:48

It sounds like you’re desperate for a girl and scared to get your hopes up. I was the exact same after 2 boys I really wanted a girl, they told me girl at my nhs scan and I didn’t believe them because I told the sonographer I’d love a girl I felt like she was just saying it to make me happy, I also booked a private 3D scan, they couldn’t tell and I had to go for a walk, do some star jumps and go back, they finally agreed girl but they didn’t seem confident so again I didn’t believe them. First thing I done when my baby gushed out was opened the legs to double check! 😂🙈 it was the princess I’d dreamed off, I can assure you it’s going to be a girl 🩷

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 24/08/2025 00:31

Worried?

chillidoritto · 24/08/2025 00:26

It can sometimes be wrong! It was it the mid 80s but scans were a relatively new thing. My “baby sister” came out with a willy and balls - my 3rd little brother!
