To think it’s ok to use someone’s bin

Saw a cabby get out and put his litter in a residential bin. My husband got confrontational and asked if he lived there and if it was his bin. To be fair there are public bins on this particular street and really the driver should have put it in there imo but equally I don’t care if it means the rubbish is in a bin and not littered.

im annoyed that my husband was confrontational, especially as we were with our kids.

Yes you are being unreasonable - the driver should wait until passing a public bin or leave the rubbish in their car

No you’re note being unreasonable - rubbish went in a bin and was not littered on the street

When i was in lidl, someone's husband pulled out some random photocard and loudly accosted some homeless guy stealing... deodorant 🙄🙄

Some men like to feel big in this way. I'd get the ick 🤢🤢

I think its fine to use someone's bin if you are respectful, ie not chucking a half full can of beer or something

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 23/08/2025 19:52

I don't think its acceptable but obviouslydepends what it is. It's your rubbish use a public bin or take it home.

I was fuming when I got home from visiting my mum in the hospital to find my bin, thay had been out for emptying, stinking because an inconsiderate dog owner had decided my bin was a good place for the mess. There's a public bin across the road. So now got 2 weeks of stink and then need to get the bin cleaned (immunocompromised so not even going to attempt to remove it)

Of course he shouldn’t use someone’s bin.

Why don’t think the only alternative is for the cabbie to dump the rubbish in the road?

TheCurious0range · 23/08/2025 19:50

Our council doesn't lift bins we have to take the bags out and put them on the kerb on bin day, it drives me nuts when a passerby has dumped loose rubbish in there

ShesTheAlbatross · 23/08/2025 19:49

I wouldn’t do it, because I wouldn’t want someone to have a go at me.

But I don’t actually think there’s anything wrong with a small amount of the right rubbish, in a bag, being put in someone else’s bin. Basically as long as the bin men will still take it, and it doesn’t stop the owner throwing away their own rubbish (so doing it on the morning the bin is being collected), then it’s fine.

Your DH sounds like some sort of comedy character!

But he needs to be careful as his attitude could well get him punched in the face or worse.

And over what? Someone using someone else's bin 🙄

Agree. It’s all a bit Oi! Oi! You want some…about a in

Lots to say here.

As a general rule, I think people should use their own bin. However, I’d rather the taxi driver use someone else’s bin than lob litter on the floor.

It does depend on the amount though - a few bits of rubbish, fine. Two black sacks and an old TV, maybe not.

I’m a little unclear why your husband is (a) bothered and (b) confrontational about someone else’s bin. Is he usually this protective of bins? Is that his chosen crusade?

Not sure it’s the hill I’d choose to die on.

MN is weirdly possessive over bins

But so long as its the right bin (so not contaminating a recycle bin for example) then really, why does it matter?

Especially if it's collection day, the bins are there to be collected and it's going soon

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 23/08/2025 19:45

Your husband needs to wind his neck in and not get all Phil Mitchell. Disproportionate response.

ACynicalDad · 23/08/2025 19:45

I’ve seen people’s dogs dumping outside our house and told people to chuck it in our bin, if it’s not much use them for the greater good, but don’t overfill even on bin day as they may not actually get picked up…
