To think it’s ok to use someone’s bin

Saw a cabby get out and put his litter in a residential bin. My husband got confrontational and asked if he lived there and if it was his bin. To be fair there are public bins on this particular street and really the driver should have put it in there imo but equally I don’t care if it means the rubbish is in a bin and not littered.

im annoyed that my husband was confrontational, especially as we were with our kids.

Yes you are being unreasonable - the driver should wait until passing a public bin or leave the rubbish in their car

No you’re note being unreasonable - rubbish went in a bin and was not littered on the street

Nope I have to buy my bin and then pay for it to be emptied yes it’s council tax but still. Iy
my bin isn’t collected because of you then I’ve got to pay to get it emptied by someone else.

Use your own bin or an actual public one.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 23/08/2025 20:37

I think it’s totally fine but there are lots of folk on MN who are weird / enraged by this

The rules for our bins are extremely strict. If people put rubbish in that violate those rules, our trash doesn’t get picked up. Among them all trash must be in bags and the lid must be closed completely so we do not go even the tiniest bit over.

we also have the idiosyncratic problem that I am allergic to most rubbish bags. I have to order special ones that don’t have the stupid scent barriers everyone is so fond of these days. Someone putting the wrong bag in the bin would mean I can’t go near the bin again until it is emptied and decontaminated. A truly ridiculous problem, but my reality.

Are most bin bags not regular unscented, I’ve not encountered scented as the default were you need to actively seek unscented. I buy brabantia they have no scent

It didn't used to bother me but now with all the different bins to deal with , if there's something in wrong bin like plastic or metal in the household or cardboard bin etc then some bin men refuse to empty it.

Apparently I’m unreasonable then! I think I’m annoyed with my husbands reaction if anything and that it was so disproportionate. He gets so high and mighty and cannot see from anyone else’s view point. But now I’m just having a rant about hubby, sorry!

Your not wrong its situational and in that situation the taxi driver really didn't do anything wrong and your dh overreacted and was just nasty for no reason

Friendlygingercat · 23/08/2025 20:26

A relative visits a couple of times a week and takes away a binbag to put in the communal bins near him. So as a single person I have comparatively little rubbish to put out. Ive had kids dump coke and soft drink bottles on top of the cardboard in my recycling bin and then the bin people not take it if they see it. Nowadays when I hear the waggon coming round I nip out and inspect it to make sure nothing contraband has been added. Anything that doesnt belong gets dumped in the general bin. Then I wait while the bin gets emptied so I can pull it back in.

The actual issue is your husband, not the bins
Frankly if it wasn’t bin he’d be confrontational about something else
is he abusive physically or verbally to you?

As long as it's put in the correct bin, no issue. How did your DH know that the cabby didn't actually live there, or he could be visiting his mum or a friend? So many people chuck rubbish out of their cars that I would think this a good thing really.

He asked the guy if he lived there. Then proceded to call the guy a tramp… whilst behaving like a tramp himself. I’m so mad!

I don't think it's great. I get cross if someone puts something in my recycling box and unfortunately just chuck it into the road. I know that's not nice but it's not my litter so why should I have it in my bin.

I wouldn't care or notice if it was out for collection. Afterwards, yeah, I 'd probably be pissed off if someone dumped a load of crap in there before I brought it back in. It's not really accessible from the street unless someone's really motivated to get to my specific bin.

NowYouSee · 23/08/2025 20:18

Our bins are small, our council recycles surprisingly little and if the lid isn’t down they won’t empty it. So someone putting a crisp wrapper in, no problem, someone putting in a bag of rubbish is a problem as we then don’t have enough room for ours.

EchoedSilence · 23/08/2025 20:16

Our bins are hooked onto the back of the bin lorry and the rubbish tipped in, so I couldn't care less if someone puts some rubbish in it.

birdglasspen · 23/08/2025 20:09

A crisp wrapper and a tissue, sure no problem but where I live people in holiday homes and campervans will stop at the roadside and leave their weeks rubbish in folks bins. That’s not on! There is a dump open 6 days a week so it’s really lazy!

NoThanksNeeded · 23/08/2025 20:05

Pebbles16 · 23/08/2025 20:00

Inexcusable if not bagged as bin men just pull the bags out and anything floating about just gets left to get stuck at the bottom forever and a day.

They don't take bags out here, the lorries have lifters

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 23/08/2025 20:05

Once the bin is on pavement it’s in an accessible public place and tbh inevitable that folk put rubbish in a bin

youalright · 23/08/2025 20:01

I don't think people should but I think your husband went to far. Our recycling bin was left out to be emptied in the morning and someone dumped their mcdonalds wrappers in it which meant our recycling didn't get emptied and it was another 2 weeks until it would be emptied again plus the fact I had to take all the mcdonalds stuff out and put in general waste id rather not touch strangers half eaten food and milkshake had spilled out so needed cleaning

randomchap · 23/08/2025 19:59

Two issues here really.

Firstly don't use someone else's bin. If it's not yours and you don't have permission, do not use it

Secondly, don't get all aggro about minor issues

HeddaGarbled · 23/08/2025 19:58

Slightly cheeky but considerably less offensive than the aggressive husband.

Ddakji · 23/08/2025 19:55

Laura95167 · 23/08/2025 19:53

If the bin is on the street for collection I think its fine if its not full. If its on someones drive, yard its not.

I disagree. As others have said, binmen often just pull the bin bags out so anything that isn’t in a bin bag gets left in the bin.

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 23/08/2025 19:54

I always think easily aroused in mood and confrontational is a marker as one to watch. And not in a good way
