Pub Quiz question: 'How many months have 30 days in?'

What would your answer be?

It's a shit question because it's purposely ambiguous and not as clever as it thinks it is.

I'm sure the answer they want is 11 but, as you could make a case for 4, it's a bad question to ask. A "trick" question (this hardly counts) must have a single right answer.

There is a single right answer if you listen or read the question if it is exactly as in the op

Why is it so hard for people to get it?

SprayWhiteDung · 23/08/2025 10:48

This kind of question at a pub quiz is out of order and I would be disappointed.

But pub quizzes take on a wide variety of questions and formats. You're very unlikely to get one where you personally love every round and every question. Personally, I sigh with disappointment when they announce a sport round, and mentally switch off until the music, history, literature, geography, current affairs etc. rounds, which I know I'll likely enjoy.

The only way to get a pub quiz that contains 100% questions of which you approve is to organise and compile one yourself... but then you obviously can't compete in it!

Pub Quiz question: 'How many months have 30 days in?'

What would your answer be?

11, every one except February.

I used to ask my Maths classes in mental questions 'In 2004 how many months have 29 days?'.

user2848502016 · 23/08/2025 10:36

4 but also could be a trick question and answer being 11
So I think either 4 or 11 should get a point and if they wanted 4 as an answer they should have asked “how many months have exactly 30 days”

There are lots of 'classic' pub quiz questions that are designed to sound suspiciously easy, but which are actually trick questions.

From which animal is catgut made?
After which animal were the Canary Islands named?
In which country are the vast majority of Panama hats made?
For the playing of which sport was the famous club in Wimbledon, London established in 1858?
Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey are the three counties of which country? (with 'the' being a crucial part of the question).
The lyrics of which country's national anthem mention the King of Spain?

There are loads of them!

If anybody is interested and hasn't already Googled them...

From which animal is catgut made?
Sheep
After which animal were the Canary Islands named?
Dogs
In which country are the vast majority of Panama hats made?
Ecuador
For the playing of which sport was the famous club in Wimbledon, London established in 1858?
Croquet
Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey are the three counties of which country? (with 'the' being a crucial part of the question).
Jamaica
The lyrics of which country's national anthem mention the King of Spain?
The Netherlands

Yeah that is a crap question tbh. One thing I do know for sure is that I love your username @DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat Grin 👒

EWAB · 23/08/2025 10:23

Jesus! My son for far too many years probably from 4 to 9 had a thing for really shit, irritating jokes and this was one of them!

He is now late twenties and still has a propensity for this kind of ‘humour’ around the table at Christmas.

This kind of question at a pub quiz is out of order and I would be disappointed.

11!

autienotnaughty · 23/08/2025 07:56

If it was ‘only 30 days’ the answer would be 4.
if it’s 30 days the answer is 11.

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 23/08/2025 07:52

The answer was... 🥁🥁🥁

11 🙈

We put 4 😂

Because a lot of people won't read the question properly and assume it to mean 'How many months are 30 days long'? and start naming them.

I had a great one recently....

There are 10 black socks and 20 white socks in a drawer. Without looking, how many socks would I need to pull out of the draw to be guaranteed a matching pair?

3, but neither the op question nor yours is hard nor a trick people can assume what they like the answers are not complex

Sure a pub quiz is not a serious issue but in society the problem is people dont think and make assumptions

Velmy · 23/08/2025 03:17

cariadlet · 23/08/2025 03:12

3?

I tried picturing pulling socks out of the drawer and what the permutations could be.

Yep, but the number of people who went 21 was mind blowing 😅

teksquad · 23/08/2025 03:17

3 ?

I'd have answered 11 to the months question.

downundergirl · 23/08/2025 03:17

All except February.

latetothefisting · 23/08/2025 02:08

I disagree it's poorly worded- the whole point is to examine the exact wording to debate what it's actually asking (and then come to 11).

If it was "how many months have 11 days in them" it would be too obvious.

For the answer to be 4 the question would have to be "how many months are 30 days long" or "last 30 days" or similar.

also that's a very basic question for a pub quiz, barely a step up from asking how many months in a year, so the slight "trick" or debate/think twice element brings it more to a normal pub question standard.

Edited

It is not rocket science if the wording is what was asked it is a very simple answer needed, the is no smoke and mirrors the answer is 11

Velmy · 23/08/2025 03:00

saveforthat · 22/08/2025 22:44

I don't agree with 11. I would read it as exactly 30 days and I think most people would. Pub quizes are usually general knowledge not trick questions.

If it doesn't say 'exactly 30 days' then you're making an assumption and filling in a blank yourself.

'How many months have 30 days in?' seems like it's been written quite deliberately to be taken literally.

Loads of pub quizzes have trick questions or brain teasers. Always have.
