  • WHATS Not whatsapp (thanks predictive text!) 😅
My DD, 1 at the time, had the slightest runny nose, a little sneeze and MIL screeched, “You better call the Doctor and demand you get seen this afternoon! You better had, or you’ll have social services at your door for neglect!” That sneeze never transpired into a cold….. But whats the craziest thing your MIL has said? This is NOT a MIL bashing thread, but it perplexes me that woman says the darndest things, but thats just who she is as a person! I do love her, she just confuses me.

I’ve had quite a few thrown at me. Some of my favs…”you’re a large size” when I was around 8 months pregnant with my third baby. “Why what’s wrong” when DH called her and asked would she be able to drop my DS home rather than us coming to collect him after I had just got out of hospital from deliverying my baby who was a late miscarriage. “Do you really like those?” About my cluster of ear piercing infront of all DHs family. Charmer…

My MIL insisted that our son was the spitting image of her DH... that would be DH's stepfather.

My FIL regularly wangs on about how much my kids look like him as a child. All to do with the superior family genes apparently. He’s my OHs stepdad so those genes really are something special.

ChequerToRed · 22/01/2026 14:43

My MIL was horrible. She was extremely religious in a fringy evangelical way, came from a weird and very rural family and had untreated/undiagnosed mental health problems. When I became pregnant with what was her first grandchild the very first thing she said, to my OH as if I wasn’t there, was ‘Is it yours?’. She then took almost no interest in my DS or any subsequent grandchildren of my OHs siblings. She was spectacularly racist about my SILs fiancée now husband to the point of refusing to go to the wedding. When another BIL had an accident that gave him facial injuries she insisted that instead of plastic surgery to fix some issues he’d even left with he should turn to prayer.

MIL only become MIL from hell when they show no respect for boundaries and their DIL, and worst, blame them when their own son is not making all the efforts towards an unreasonable relationship.

MIL who give the same respect to their DIL as they give anyone else don't tend to have problems.

Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Because whether a woman treats other people respectfully is a matter of her personality not her role or life stage.
So these MiLs who show no respect were once simply younger versions of themselves, and were some other poor woman's DiL, showing their own MiL no respect.
If you are the MiL of a DiL like that, then it doesn't matter how respectful you are, you'll still have problems.

Exactly, thank you. I think one of the reasons, apart from the extremely bad behaviour, that new mothers feel upset by their mils is because having a newborn is such a vulnerable time both emotionally and physically for a mother. Unsolicited advice and criticism may be well intentioned, but is unwelcome. Wait to be asked. SS will not come knocking.
So if mothers of sons can try to remember that when their grandchildren are born maybe less threads like this will appear.

MIL questioned me repeatedly about my alcohol intake during pregnancy. As it happened, I didn't drink a drop (I know there is a big difference between a glass of wine here and there, and binge drinking on a regular basis though) and I don't think she's ever seen me have more than one or two drinks at a time prior to pregnancy. When we asked her why she kept asking this, she said that many children are affected by foetal alcohol syndrome and it's a very real concern. YES BUT WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ME??!!

😂 I feel for you. My mother in law told me i didn’t have a hope in hell of birthing any babies I was far to weak and skinny to manage it! Turns out I birthed both in under 4hrs - imagine!

Exactly. I would never dream about lying, steamrolling over boundaries and being verbally abusive to any other woman, yet MIL’s should be able to get away with it..why exactly?

Is that not the purpose of the thread? To sneer at and malign mothers of sons?
I wasn't actually being serious. I also have two sons. I'm just making the point that MiL are not a subset of women known for their weird, nasty and stupid behaviour.
Up to 80% of mothers have sons. Most of these sons will make them a MiL one day. Yet always there's this constant clamouring to belittle and mock them.
Given MiL is a catagory most mothers will join at some point, it's a bit self sabotaging imo.

Sneering at mothers of sons is not the purpose of this thread. Its a sharing space for DILs who have been through hell and back to share some reasons why. In my own personal experience it was my MIL, my FIL is a great person! If you have a batshit FIL/ SIL/ BIL then by all means please share your experience if it helps, if you don’t have that experience then there is no need to comment. I was bullied and lied about for years by my MIL and I am in no way going to try and let others condone her behaviour in any way.

New mothers of baby boys don’t yet realise that THEY themselves might be a dreaded MIL one day…. and her DIL will start threads about them.

Years ago, when I first met my now-DH, he was still living at home. One day I borrowed a jumper of his, as we were in his mums garden and it was cold...

MIL: Oh, I was going to put that jumper on but it's far too big for me. Fits you nicely though" 🙃

Haha, my mother used to come out with this when my teenage DDs started wearing crop tops. "They should be wearing a vest to keep their kidneys warm". My DDs just looked at her in horror at the thought of wearing a vest 🤣

Ha ha, not a clue where this old saying has come from but I can confidently say he never got a kidney cold lol

Thundercloudsontheway · 22/01/2026 12:25

Not MIL but my own lovely but slightly bonkers mum.

On hearing that a friend had been involved in an accident and they had to operate and amputate his leg from above the knee, asked in all seriousness if they had managed to save his foot?!?

Turns out that she thought if you had your leg amputated from above the knee that they just took out the section from your knee and your hip - She had never really thought about it and just assumed they just stitched the rest of the leg and foot back on - but never thought to question whey there were not masses of people wondering about with one leg shorter than the other walking about (or in circles if you think about it)

My MIL won't go to Cornwall as there's no where to park.

This is my favourite.

BubblesandTiara · 22/01/2026 12:22

I think my MIL pontificating that children should have mothers at home, and that it was very detrimental for them to have selfish mothers going to work etc. was a big one.

She stayed surprisingly quiet when I finally asked how she felt having raised a son who was such a bad father he worked full time and was away quite a lot for work 😂

GetAbsOrDieTrying · 22/01/2026 12:12

“Why are you breastfeeding when you can just give a bottle. My daughter had twins and she gave them only bottles with formula. She knows best so you should do it too!”

-Please note SIL was pulled up by a Doc as her children became grossly overweight due to too much formula and this delayed their walking.

“Why don’t you give your child a pacifier/dummy? My daughter always did and her children slept so well”.

Both of SIL’s twins now need braces due to front teeth protruding due to excessive use of dummy. She regrets it.

Thank God I ignored MIL! 😅

Fingalscave · 22/01/2026 12:12

Not a MIL, but she was my dad's MIL!
My grandmother was a horrible woman. My cousin and his partner lived together, they just weren't married, when they had their son. He was the first great grandchild and everyone was thrilled, except grandmother, who never spoke to them again because they weren't married. Apparently they were disgusting and the child would have no surname.
The interesting thing is that when the old dragon died, we discovered she'd been 6 months pregnant when she married grandad! She'd lied about the year of her marriage. She wasn't always against pre-marital sex!

Absolutely 0 involvement with SS at all. She just says stuff like this sometimes,

What has been the most stupid and unhinged thing you have said @Summerends1

Mhhk · 22/01/2026 11:59

“It’s your fault my son has flu because you’ve made him help out with the baby. He works, he shouldn’t have to do anything with the baby”.

magicalmadmadamim · 22/01/2026 11:35

Not really crazy but mine said i should feel embarrassed because my exclusively breastfed 2 year old had a harmless habit of putting his hand on my other breast for comfort while feeding. I was livid!
