Just read this awful story in the Guardian. Awful and makes me feel so angry and so unsafe as a half Black woman.

I thought we took back control of our borders with Brexit.

The Bournemouth hospitality sector for example relies on immigration, just that the migrant workers now come from outside of the EU.

A lot of people thought that, but the control of our borders that was promised by Ukip was a huge, fat, lie.

We used to have the right to return asylum seekers to the first safe EU country they passed through under the Dublin agreement. Brexit means we no longer have that right, so now people who arrive here and claim asylum can stay until their claims are decided, and indefinitely if their claims succeed, making it much more attractive to come here.

I suspect the Venn diagram of Brexit voters and people angry about people in boats rocking up and claiming asylum has a huge overlap. Anyone who's in both categories really needs to give themselves a talking to.

We have to take away the incentives and the liberal paradigm in Britain. How many asylum seekers are Poland accepting?

Illegal migrants need to be detained, not put up in hotels or houses and allowed to roam around town. Even Macron has told us we're nuts.

I think we need to announce an emergency freeze on all asylum applications while we can deal with a backlog. It's one big racket. But nobody has the guts to do anything that would actually be a deterrent anyway. Starmer was a human rights lawyer - he's the exact sort of liberal that has helped create the madness.

Are you including refugees from Ukraine?

And what are the incentives and liberal paradigm?

Where will you detain refugees and asylum seekers?

You edited to add human rights

Which human rights would you take away from asylum seekers?

if the bleeding heart liberals had as much compassion for the working class who have been shafted for the last 40 odd years as they do for asylum seekers and foreign workers, this country would look very different.

If the racist right hadn't wrecked our economy in 2016 and the last Tory government spent their time in office, running in the country properly, this country would look very different.

The UK is a bit of a mess atm. Its not the fault of people who only arrived on our shores 15 minutes ago.🙄

There's no excuse for racism.

The country was wrecked a long time before 2016. Brexit was a symptom of that wrecked landscape..

Just because you don't like what you've heard, doesn't necessarily make it bs. I'll keep my mind open thanks. Just because we're lucky enough to live privileged sanitised lives doesn't mean things like this don't happen. If you're desperate enough to escape, you'll do anything. If you're escaping a war torn country or fleeing from persecution and someone offers you a lift in a dingy across turbulent water or a dodgy visa plan, which one would you take? Which would be the least dangerous option? I have a close friend who works as an immigration solicitor and it would literally blow your mind what kind of scams people pull to get here - not because they're all bad people, but because they are literally desperate to get the chance of a better life for their families.

I have provided facts. Not more lovely " I reliably heard it from someone who told someone..." I don't like it when people state things that are demonstrably untrue then change their story to something entirely irrelevant when it is proven to be untrue. You have utterly no idea what "unsanitised" life I have led. And I know more about war torn countries than you will ever know. I guarantee that. Dodgy papers do not get you into the UK. Some very few, very excellent, very expensive papers might - the minute it comes to light, which it would, you are a criminal and blew every chance of asylum you could have. Yet that poster claims to know many people who did just that? Keeping an open mind doesn't need to mean being stupid.

Bushmillsbabe · 21/08/2025 19:21

PhilippaGeorgiou · 21/08/2025 18:46

Her claims smack of something and it isn't hypocrisy. She asserted two "facts" that were impossible. Literally impossible. Changed her story when it was proven. And has shown not a shred of compassion for asylum seekers at all. I called bullshit. I proved it was bullshit. And I seriously look forward to hearing how, having dismissed others as "false asylum seekers" (60% of whom win their claims) she justifies covering up what she claims to be actual illegal immigrants. It isn't me who is the hypocrite, if that is what she's doing. On the other hand, she could just own up to making up the original assertions. It is not possible to arrive in the UK by any commercial carrier without entry documents even if you intend to claim asylum. And our entry systems are not so blind that they don't detect fake papers. Yet several staff and patients snuck through all these checks? Yeah, right.

Really, I haven't shown any compassion to people struggling? Where have I said we shouldn't accept asylum seekers, please show me. You are the one calling people criminals, in my mind, they did what they had to do to escape as a family. I have stated I have an issue with vunerable women and children being left behind.

You haven't proved anything, you have made a narrow minded assumption that you are correct because you can't wrap your head around it.

I think a lot of the public have snapped over immigration because of highly irresponsible immigration and open border policies and sheer cowardice from politicians to deal with the invasion from the small boats.

Within that, tensions are high and racism in society is sadly increasing.

IMO excessive liberalism has destroyed Britain, whether it's immigration, law and order, some of the trans stuff etc etc. Everything is liberal policy. We know we'll get that from Labour but for 14 years of the Tories governing as liberals on top and now we've got Labour back in and the public have finally snapped. Migrants coming here knowing here know they'll be treated like kings, and our liberal society will never remove them, so more and more are turning up.

You think no charity ever travels to countries which aren't 100% stable to carry out humanitarian work? It's those places where it's needed most.

Yes, I'm sure Google told you that information. I have explained already that unrest was confined to remote areas at that time, we were based about 30 miles outside the capital.

The public have finally snapped

Stop excusing racist scum and victim blaming immigrants.

The immigrants aren't to blame.

I'm blaming highly irresponsible politicians.

Britain is an extremely tolerant country but you can only push people so far. Particularly when we're in a cost of living crisis and nothing works in the country. People can't afford housing, there's not enough housing, but the government still even legally allow a million plus people in every year. The huge amounts of illegal migrants on top is also a result of political cowardice and they all have to be housed at our expense. The public have simply had enough.

You claimed people were arriving in the UK on forged papers - a country that does have all the technology - and not being detected. Several of whom you personally know. You claim.

I never said they were undetected here. On arrival they admitted their papers were false and stated wished to claim asylum.

Open your mind to the concept that things that seem unbelievable from our western point of privilege, could be true.

It was actually fairly stable for the first 6 months we were there in central areas at least, until early 2006. There were no travel advisories in place at that point saying not to travel to central Nepal, unrest was in remote rural areas only.
I had travel insurance.

I travelled with a charity, supporting with casting and rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery for children who had severe leg deformities caused by polio, who could not afford to pay for surgery, along with lecturing on the first Physiotherapy training programme in Nepal.

A war that had gone on for ten years was "stable"?

Anyway, irrelevant... India is not the UK.

Do you think every country in the world has access to biometric data and the technology to use it? Some areas caught in conflict don't even have a reliable electric supply.

Some people seem to be viewing this from a 1st world western perspective, calling things false because they can't understand that the way we do things here are not the way things are done everywhere. Which is understandable, I could never have imagined what I would go through before I went, of I had, I wouldn't have gone But I acknowledge my privilege in having escaped safely and relatively easily, money bought me a way out.

We're going around in circles because we fundamentally disagree about why people are talking about foreigners. Certain sections of society, backed up by right wing press are stirring up hate and division and scapegoating foreigners.

You're saying that that means I have my head in the sand and can't see the problem with foreigners. I'm saying you've got your head in the sand and can't see when you're being manipulated.

You think for example that the far right groups currently organising protests outside hotels and people draped in flags are just 'concerned citizens.' That the recent 'take Britain back' movement of tying flags to lampposts is 'pride in Britain' and Richard Tice is just passionate about his country.

I think you're spot on, @MiloMinderbinder925 .

Asylum seekers are the wedge that the far-right are using to make themselves popular enough to form a government. Who knows what the fuck will come next if they get into power.

The whole spectrum of UK politics has drifted rightward over my lifetime. Starmer's Labour are closer to the Tory government of Macmillan and Douglas Home than they are to Labour under Harold Wilson.

Enoch Powell was vilified for his xenophobic views, but they were no different from those of Reform leaders today.

You went to Nepal at the end stage of the civil war? When travel was not advised? Nobody knew it would come to a (sort of, mostly) end in 2006. It wasn't a bit of civil unrest. It was a war. Why would anyone be foolish enough to travel to a country where the government had advised against all but essential travel, and you couldn't get insurance for?

And is that because the pay is crap? This idea that the British won't work is absolute bullshit. Some won't, granted, some are lazy fuckers, but no more than any other nationality. But when Covid struck and the farmers put out calls for help with the crops, tons of people offered to help, until they realised they'd have to sleep 6 to a caravan in the middle of a field in the middle of nowhere. One of the reasons Brits won't do the crappy paid, crappy working conditions jobs anymore is because we spent the best of the last century fighting for better. The fact that migrants will come in and do those jobs is because they can still send a sizeable amount of their pay check home where the monthly wages are peanuts. They don't mind hotbedding and shitty conditions if it means they get to go home and build a house with what they've earned.

Doesn’t pay too badly for the kind of work it is. Circa £28-£32k.

People don’t want to do it because the hours are long, and can be unsociable, and it involves working in a hot factory with flavourings and ingredients that frankly stink.

There’s no WFH, you have to be happy to stand up for 12hrs, and the work is repetitive and monotonous.

They are a staff of people like my mum who has worked there for 40 years, the occasional youngish lad, and Eastern Europeans.

They haven’t taken a job from hundreds of applicants, nobody applies.
