To have moved her baby?

In asda this morning. Woman has her head stuck in the reduced freezer grabbing everything she wants. She has parked her trolly - with baby in it - across the freezer so nobody else can get in it. I didn’t actually want to be in it but I did need the freezer next to it - which her trolly was also preventing from opening. I said “excuse me”. No response. I said it louder - no response. At this point an elderly woman came up behind her and tried to get in the freezer, around the trolly - no good - around the woman - woman positions herself in front of old woman. Old woman says “excuse me” - no response. She taps her on the shoulder - no response.

So - not willing to stand there like an absolute clown waiting for her to allow me access to the freezer I simply move her trolly gently out of the way. Suddenly she’s aware of the world around her and says “what are you doing??” I say “getting in to this freezer”. She says “you can’t just go moving someone’s baby!” (Hearing problems ruled out!!) I say “I tried to get your attention but you didn’t respond. Elderly woman then says “EXCUSE ME! I want to get in this freezer!” Woman blames ME for the delay saying I moved her baby 😂

YANBU
I was in the same supermarket yesterday (probably different branch - maybe not) and there were 2 women along with several kids each and trollies blocking the WHOLE aisle having a catch up
Several times I said excuse me - weaving around adults then kids .
Just brushed past them in the end
Time and a place !!!!!

Someone tapped her on the shoulder though? I can tell you, anyone with a hearing impairment (and I am deaf myself) is particularly sensitive to being tapped.

Personally I think tapping anyone is pretty rude in itself. I would absolutely hate to be touched by a stranger in such a way in the supermarket. Unless you have an urgent need (wanting to quickly grab a yoghurt is not urgent), OP should have simply moved on when excuse me didn't work. People are in too much of a rush these days and that leads to rudeness (tapping someone actively shopping to get them to move, moving someone else's trolley etc).

I'm honestly not seeing the rudeness in 'blocking' the fridge next to her with her trolley that other people are. Where is her trolley meant to go? If she moved it horizontally across the aisle it would be blocking everyone. Of course her trolley is going to block a fridge while she is using the one next to it. Does nobody have any patience anymore?

It's just not nice is it to sneer like that. Who cares if it was reduced or 'the finest/best/whatever'

I think this thread says far about the op than it does about the poor mum buying reduced items.

I think the point was... perhaps others might want some reduced items?
We're not supposed to get pissed off with people blocking access, ignoring your reasonable requests and taking all the reduced items?

and why not - using a baby as a barrier isnt on

I actually disagree with the majority of posters - you can't move someone's baby like that. It's like wheeling away a disabled person in a wheelchair because they're next to something you want. It's totally unacceptable.

You couldn't wheel away an able bodied adult so you shouldn't wheel away a baby. What if the mum wasn't paying attention and the baby got lost or someone took off with it? You should have continued to get the woman's attention imo - I'd be absolutely furious if someone wheeled my baby away from me. Just be patient and wait for her to move.

I agree with you. I also think it depends on age of the baby. And I don’t think we need to live in a world where one person is always absolutely right.

She didn’t hear or was out of it or being rude and didn’t respond. She has a baby so I’d assume fuzzy head from a bad night. So you were delayed and impatiently moved the baby and trolley but in a way you would have been fine with someone moving your baby. So maybe you weren’t wrong OP but you weren’t right either. I will defend the other woman for yelling. Totally normal response to someone moving your baby.

BoleynMemories13 · 20/08/2025 14:26

Exactly this. If someone is in my way in the supermarket I hover for a few seconds. If they appear to just be 'in the way' (ie chatting to someone in front of where I want to be), I say excuse me please. If they are actively shopping, they got there first and I either wait patiently or move on to somewhere else before returning to that freezer/shelf when it's free.

I'd say you're the entitled one here OP, assuming you could push in 'because I only wanted a yoghurt'. It doesn't matter what you wanted, she was there first.

I also wouldn't rule out a hearing impairment just because she was able to hold a conversation when looking at you. There's every chance she genuinely didn't hear you when she wasn't looking at you.

In your shoes, if she didn't move/acknowledge me on the second excuse me I would have just carried on to the next aisle and returned a few minutes later for my yoghurt. It really wasn't worth the agro. She may have overreacted by claiming you were moving her baby, when it was clearly just the trolley the baby was in, but moving anything belonging to someone else, without their permission, is a passive aggressive move.

You were too impatient, YABU.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 20/08/2025 14:26

This woman has obviously learned that nobody wants to move a trolley with a baby in it, so the baby has become a way for her to hog stuff.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 20/08/2025 13:34

I'm not sure on this one and might go against the grain, she was actively shopping and I imagine placing items in her trolley, not just blocking the way. Why do you and the other woman have a right to get in in front of her when she was there first? Admittedly she could have acknowledged you when you said excuse me, but I wouldn't like someone moving my trolley with child strapped in either.

Also, her being able to hear you when facing you doesn't rule out a hearing impairment, plenty of people are deaf on one side/struggle to hear if there's background noise or rely on lip reading.

I would have done the same- but your language suggests you may not have been as calm and measured as you suggest! Oh, and it doesn’t matter how old the other woman was.

I think most people try to be more courteous to elderly people in supermarkets. There's a higher chance they're not going to find it easy being on their feet for a long time or able to reach around people/squeeze past as confidently if not steady on their feet.

Why does everyone else's convenience trump that of the woman shopping who reached the fridge first? Is no one teaching their children to wait their turn anymore?
By all means, I think if someone is chatting to a friend they've bumped into, on their phone etc then they're inconveniencing people by not moving. Actively retrieving items out of the fridge then people should be waiting their turn to get in that space.

The OP was after a different fridge. There was no reason for the woman to be blocking access to a fridge she wasn't even looking in.

Is no one teaching their children to be aware of and show consideration for those around them anymore?

Survivingnotthriving24 · 20/08/2025 14:21

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/08/2025 14:17

Then this woman will continue to inconvenience other shoppers every time she goes out.

If she didn't like the OP moving her trolley out of the way, maybe next time she won't just ignore someone who is trying to get her attention.

Lots of people inconvenience us when we go shopping. It really isn't ok to move a trolley with a baby in it. You wait or return it is simple.

I wouldn't move anyone's trolley let alone one that had a baby in it!

It is frustrating yes but the correct thing to have done in this situation would have been to wait or look at other items and then return.

If you were shopping and turned around to grab stuff to put in your trolley, would you genuinely be OK to see your baby wheeled off halfway down the shop?

I don't have any issues with moving other people's trollies, but it's so dangerous to wheel off a baby (or any vulnerable person tbh). It's a completely different situation to moving someone's trolley and I think OP is BU

Wheeled half way down the shop?! 😂😂 are you the mum? If so - stop hogging the bloody fridges!

Nope, not on this occasion. I just wanted a Greek yogurt from the freezer next to it. I would maybe have had a Quick Look in if it hadn’t been blocked off but I wasn’t that bothered - I just wanted my yogurt

Wait - frozen Greek yogurt is a thing? Why didn’t I know this?

Wheeled her baby away 😂😂😂 I literally moved the trolley inches from where it was. If I’d took off with it and ditched it in the next aisle, you’d have a point.

Also, I didn’t want to be in front of her, I wanted access to the fridge she wasn’t using

user1492757084 · 20/08/2025 14:08

I would not have moved the trolley.
I would not have said excuse me; the woman was busy in that space.
I might have spoken to the baby, knowing me.
I would have waited until she had all she needed and moved away or I'd gather other food elsewhere and come back later.
