Mothers chihuahua ate half of my babies grape

Just as the title states.. I took my boys 1 and 3 years old to my mothers. She never makes the effort to visit us i see her every other week. She lives with my two other older siblings and my dad. Last year they've bought another chihuahua that is just crazy. They don't train it it bites my children and now my baby is crawling it bites his face and is vicious, it steals food and items and growls when I try and get them. They don't do anything to help just idolise this dog. They have about a 2 metre crate for it, which I have to put it in when it gets vicious with my children.
I went because my eldest loves my older sister who lives there and loves seeing her. I was feeding my one year old downstairs whilst the dog was upstairs. I didn't realise the dog ran down and at the same time my baby threw one half of a grape then another one and the dog ran and ate them up. My sister and mum started screaming and rang the vet who said they must rush her down. All the while so hostile and angry at me when I said I didn't realise and im sorry. I know dogs cant eat grapes but I have a baby and toddler and thought the dog was upstairs. It's hard to manage in basically a glass house with so many ornaments and crap everywhere. It's the opposite of baby proof which I don't expect it to be but she doesn't even help me one bit when I come round. My mum only has interest in her new dog not her grandchildren. She has now sent me the receipt for £105 she's had to pay to make the dog be sick at the vets. I am not paying it and for one don't have that money. AiBu?

My dog frequently ate grapes - and chocolate! - because he was a greedy thief, and he lived to be 15. They were unreasonable to rush it to the vet. I would not pay.

SweetHydrangea · 19/08/2025 19:11

I wouldn’t pay anything. If the dog was trained properly it wouldn’t have eaten the grape, so it’s your mums fault as far as I’m concerned. I also wouldn’t be going be back there with a dog of any size that bites my children, so it doesn’t really matter if she gets in a huff about it. Doesn’t sound like you have a lot to lose if she stops speaking to you op.

Ok- doesn’t feel like a particularly nuanced
response though? That males are generally twats? Im also not male….

LovePoppy · 19/08/2025 19:05

You seriously need to stop taking your children somewhere so unsafe!

Northernlassie1974 · 19/08/2025 19:04

if your baby had eaten something, for example a tablet left on your mums floor, would you blame her for it and ask her to pay medical bills or would everyone agree you are responsible for safeguarding your child wherever you are and need to foot the bills yourself?
Id think it would be option 2.
Dont pay and dont go there again, if they ever visit, dog doesn’t come!

Livpool · 19/08/2025 19:04

Don’t pay and stop going there. Protect your children and your mental health!

Returnofjude · 19/08/2025 19:03

The dog does bite yes. It nips all the time. It has since they got it and has drew blood on myself before and all the family that live there. It has nipped my baby on the face recently

I think the dog is vicious

Seriously? Once a fortnight you visit? And you think the dog is “vicious”.

I've seen this @returnofjude account comment in similar sarcastic and derisive ways on different posts. They're clearly a sad individual with nothing better to do when people are trying to get advice or ask questions.

Huh? Your family sounds an immature dramatic laden “toxic codependency” farce.

Your mum and sister were screaming…. I imagine the neighbours were fairly used to that.

And you visit your mother once a fortnight despite her dog biting your children

Then you get in an arse when we are WTF!!

So you start backtracking.

Ah that amazing humour of yours, keep it up young man.

I don’t assume you’re a man because of your pathetic ‘everyone agrees with me’ responses, or that you try to use humour to deflect from your lack of confidence or your use of sock accounts, I can just tell by your tone.

Unfortunately you are tone deaf

Why would your clearly negative assumption on my character here - make me a male?! Nice bit of casual sexism
there! You’re wrong- unsurprisingly- I am also not a Chihuahua- if that’s your next guess.

FGS. They're an incredibly misunderstood and often mistreated breed. First of all many of them have been irresponsibly bred to be in pain and not able to breathe or smell properly. Then they get bought by people like the OP's mum who don't treat them like dogs, and small dogs at that.

If you look at the world from a chihuahua's point of view, EVERYBODY is a giant compared to you, and that's often TERRIFYING, particularly when you haven't been socialised and introduced to things properly. Children and babies are often scary to any dog (and particularly small dogs) because not only are they the "wrong" size for humans they don't behave like all of the other humans, and they don't listen to your body language at all. Add in that chihuahuas are often not allowed to exhibit normal dog behaviour, not trained, and treated as if they have zero bodily autonomy; you'd be grumpy too. When being quite clearly terrified doesn't work, they resort to defensive aggression, which is how they get their reputation for being "dickhead dogs". They're usually not, they've just been genetically and mentally fucked up by humans.

Think you’ll find I wasn’t the one initially suggesting they were dickheads. Does sound like they shouldn’t be bred though!

‘All here’? You really can’t speak for yourself can you, you have to bring other people and all those reactions you’ve received, into your responses. Hope you can find some confidence soon, you sad little man (it’s pretty obvious).

Your mum has dogs that bite your kids and YOU GO AND TAKE THEM BACK?

mate, you’re a headline waiting to happen. Don’t be daft, you want to see your sister, meet her outside the house.

This.
I voted YABU because I can't believe you seem to be putting more thought into this sodding grape than the fact this nasty little dog has bitten your children.

It needs a VCO on it immediately.

Never take them there again.

Waterweight · 19/08/2025 18:44

Our dog ate grapes by accident & A) nothing happened & B) we also called a vet who advised we see a chemist as there's a product you can safely give dogs to make them throw up which we couldn't get cause no chemist would actually sell it to us

So moral of the story is that it's not guaranteed to be bad & if it is it's possible there are other health issues at play then just half a grape sl don't beat yourself up about it

myheadsjustmush · 19/08/2025 18:37

So your mother's darling dog bites your child's face and is downright vicious every time you visit.

There is no way I would be taking my children there again.

And no, I would not be paying the vet's bill either.

Namechangerage · 19/08/2025 18:28

Hi mum, sorry I won’t be paying the £105. Babies drop food sometimes and it isn’t not my duty to keep the dog away from the child when we visit. Not that I can afford it either. I think it’s best we stay away from the dog as it’s not really compatible with children, you are always very welcome to ours if you want to spend time with your granddaughter.

@AcquadiP
The dog does bite yes. It nips all the time. It has since they got it and has drew blood on myself before and all the family that live there. It has nipped my baby on the face recently and left no mark I should've made that clearer but I didn't know biting meant piercing the skin, which it didn't that time thank God. Since then when baby is cruising or playing with his toy on the carpet, I always put the dog in the crate. This particular incident happened when the dog was upstairs with my mother whilst she was getting ready and I was feeding him in his high chair.
I think the dog is vicious. I had a previous chihuahua and it was never like that it can be playful with my eldest sometimes but I won't take that chance now. It clearly has so much energy but they don't take it out or even rarely let it go in the garden. It's when it gets something in it's mouth it's vicious or if it thinks you're playing it can sometimes really sink it's teeth in. They won't train it, the issue is never with them or their dog it seems.

Edited

Why on Earth do you risk taking your children into the house? It doesn’t matter whose fault it is if the dog is badly trained, if it hurts one of your children it will be your fault for putting them into that situation. If you’re a responsible parent you need to keep your children away from danger, that means you don’t take them into a house where there is a dog known to bite. Children are unpredictable, don’t risk having them around an unpredictable untrained dog, as you’ e found out today you can’t always know where the dog is in the houses and if the situation was different it could have bitten your child again.
