To wonder what’s going on with all the big lips

Everywhere I go I see women with massive lips. It looks like so many women are wearing lip fillers.

i totally get that if you’re someone with really thin lips then you may want to plump them up, but I see this look on lots of women from their 20s to 60s.

I actually think the pressure to inject chemicals into your face to adhere to a beauty standard is everyone's business. Most beauty standards are a direct consequence of patriarchy, and this one is harmful and imo akin to things like corsets and foot binding.

It's not about blaming women for how they want to present, or judging women. It's about considering the wider impact, and thinking about it through a feminist lens. Surely people don't want their daughters growing up feeling they need to inject crap into their lips to look good? Don't we want women to feel comfortable with their normal appearance, as men do, without the pressure to completely change their face? Normalising normal faces is good for everybody.

Men (unless you're a celebrity perhaps) don't do half as much of this crap. It's a feminist issue.

It really isn’t thought. It’s just people giving too much attention to what other people do with their own lives. Iv worked in the industry for over 15yrs and never have I had a beautiful women care about someone less attractive, it’s always the frumpy ones who seem to care what someone else’s is doing. I myself have fillers it’s none of the reasons you stated, it’s simply MY face so MY choice. I don’t live my life to make others comfortable and I can promise you I certainly am not looking at the size of anyone else’s lips and judging as it doesn’t affect my life in any way shape or form. My daughter will always grow up with the same mindset

Vernon Kay just told a joke and it reminded me of this thread.

How do you turn a duck into a soul singer? Put it in the microwave until it's bill withers. 🦆

As long as no one harms a duck!🦆🫣

I very rarely see that over plumped lips look in my area. If I do see it it's usually on young women or people who look like tourists.

I certainly hope it's going out of fashion. I just think it looks so painful. A little bit of filler maybe just to bring back youthful volume, but when it's that much it really does look unfortunate. But each to their own.

Arraminta · 21/08/2025 13:46

There's a certain female socio-economic that aspires to this plastic fantastic look. See also, ratty hair extensions, pantomime horse eyelashes, heavy handed bronzer and garish gel nails.

It certainly doesn't appeal to my DD's boyfriends or their male friends. They actually see it as a handy visual indicator to avoid these sort of girls.

they must be insecure to feel their actual looks aren’t good enough, and that’s what I find depressing

I know a mum from school, who is lovely but over a period of time has succumbed to many cosmetic treatments so that she now looks "unnatural" She believes it looks better on SM photos which I can understand.

However overtime she's revealed she has been in a very difficult/abusive relationship and as her self esteem eroded she has ramped up treatments, so I believe there is a link. Sadly the look she now has is likely to attract men who are shallow and not looking for a commitment. All the men in my life of various ages, hate the look.

That’s really sad and just confirms my suspicion that it acts as a filter to attract the scummiest men.

I think men think they are good BJ. Lips. I wonder if it makes a difference? It definitely makes them look as if they are looking to give men a good time, I can’t see much other use for them really?

I agree. That is pretty much what it boils down to!

GreyCarpet · 21/08/2025 11:09

Same.

Although, it has reminded me of son telling me that he only knows one man who likes the look. Probably not a coincidence that this man the other week mocked him for helping a couple of young women out saying, "What did you do that for mate? They're not going to shag you, you know,"

Definitely a particular type of man and not one you'd want a relationship with!

It’s an interesting point about the security or otherwise of women who have extreme versions of lip-filling etc. I agree that, in one sense, yes - they must be insecure to feel their actual looks aren’t good enough, and that’s what I find depressing.

But in a day-to-day, real-life context my experience is that women who look like this are very assertive indeed, sometimes to the point of aggression. But then aggression can also indicate insecurity, I guess. I’ve certainly encountered some who you feel would kick off if you so much as caught their eye.

People who have good self esteem are not overtly aggressive.
Yes It's a sign of insecurity, low self esteem and the feeling that they have to fight to get their needs met rather than something innate.

Internal Locus of Control comes innately from self, looking outside of yourself for esteem and constant validation via External Locus of Control is the issue and why people go to extremes.
It leads to hostility, conflict and aggression, depression and anxiety/poor relationships etc

Edit It also means they are vulnerable to manipulation and abuse.
I am not talking about tweakments, nice hair, nails btw I'm talking about extremes as per the original poster

Nutmuncher · 21/08/2025 09:30

Done well by a professional, lip filler can enhance a face, when paired with good skin, done hair and natural makeup. It’s when you see women who’ve had them done in the tanning salon or some dodgy nail bar, massive unnatural shaped and size lips, hair scraped back, thick makeup and bad teeth- that’s when they look very tacky and cheap.

You seriously think that women who dislike the look of overly inflated lips so their top lip curls over, teamed with eyelashes that look like overweight spiders are insecure? I saw someone looking like that yesterday and thought thank goodness I don't look like that.

And you think people here have too much time on their hands and too many opinions? News: it's a discussion board.

Well, exactly.

And as I keep on saying, women are allowed to do whatever they want to themselves and everyone else is allowed an opinion on it.

Why is that so hard to grasp? I guess they don’t like the opinions!

And why do you care what “look” I have or any other woman for that matter? I’m not asking to date you, I’m not asking to put filler in your face, I don’t even know you exist on the planet or that you breathed air. This is the problem with half the people on this forum, too much time on their hands and too many opinions

Because you are making misogynistic comments and calling (hypothetical) other women who haven’t had ‘work’ done ‘plain boring and sad’.

This is a very revealing opinion, but it doesn’t show you in a good light.

I saw a woman in Aldi yesterday like this. Sat a child in the trolley, pushing it with one hand whilst having a conversation on her phone. She'd got overinflated lips especially the top lip that was curled up and made her look deformed.

Topped off with stretchy nylonny leggings that scrunched up the crack of her (substantial) arse, and slides.

Eww. Women are not turning into ducks. Ducks are cute whereas women with rubber lips and scrunchy arse leggings are anything but cute. They look ridiculous but each to their own.

Well it is an opinion poll!! Which you are also having your opinion on!! And you were rude to someone "you dont know" - and wrong, its the more beautiful that DONT get ski jump lips done! AND beauty doesn't mean the same thing for you that it might for others.

But why does it bother you what they look like? I can guarantee you no beautiful groomed woman is looking at you and writing in forms how plain and boring you look.. it’s always the lesser attractive ones that have something to say. Sad really

Actually you can’t guarantee that, I know several women/girls who do spend a proportionate amount of time on a night out, slagging off people who don’t appear to have had any work down on their face, and yes they are plain and boring and what’s wrong with them omg look at what they’re wearing is all that comes out of their mouth. Mind I do live in an affluent area where they all look identical barbie..you choke on aftershave and perfume and it’s so bloody shallow it’s unreal. And sadly they are shallow in their heads to.

RavenhairedRachel · 21/08/2025 08:29

If they saw what they looked like from the side absolutely hideous stuck out like a duck billed platypus. If they're going out of fashion that's good news hopefully the camel eyelashes and thick eyebrows will go out too. Whatever happened to natural beauty.

Wow! You win the misogyny prize on this thread.

I’m guessing you have ‘the look’ being discussed here?

For ‘plain and boring’, I’ll read ‘natural and understated’.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The way @Feelinglost10 keeps defending the look makes you think so, doesn't it. I also think she is completely missing the point.

Rather than defending “the look” I’m actually defending a woman’s right to look however she likes without other insecure women putting them down. If this was a post on fat people and how disgusting and lazy that “look” was there would be outcry. For me, a woman can do whatever she likes with her own body and face and if that’s what makes HER feel beautiful why does anyone else feel they have the right to judge?! It’s pretty embarrassing

I think the same about heavy tattoos and facial piercings.
