To think this isn’t that weird

Suffered with anxiety all my life. Finally found medication that helps. Usually I wouldn’t leave the house alone however today I’ve come into my local town to post some parcels and do a bit of browsing. I’ve just popped into the bistro and currently having a glass of cider with ice (it’s very warm here) DP rang and thinks this is weird.

I’m a SAHM with an incredibly hard 5yo autistic DS and this feels like heaven🤷🏻‍♀️ Would anybody else do this or is it strange?

Cheers by the way🍻

It sounds lovely - good for you and well done x

Bababear987 · 16/08/2025 17:18

Not weird at all and your husband sounds like a knob for suggesting otherwise, I'm betting hes a great source of your anxiety if this is the way he talks to you, he should be celebrating this with you

pinkdelight · 16/08/2025 17:15

If you've suffered all your life and not been able to leave the house and now you can go and do this, then it's not that wild for him to find a whole new you weird. It's good that you're out and enjoying life, but it'll obviously take some getting used to if you've always been someone who's been home. I wouldn't go straight to 'he's the weird one how dare he' nor 'this is weird I shouldn't do it'. Just manage his expectations so he's understanding how you're changing and then won't find it weird and can be glad for you. Ideally it won't be an unusual thing for either of you very soon and he'll see you doing lots of new things not just having booze in the afternoon, which is fine ofc but he's obviously not used to it and might even think you're using that to ease your anxieties now.

Starlight7080 · 16/08/2025 17:15

Well i dont think his response or lack of support when you are having a bit of time to yourself is helping your anxiety.
Its definitely not weird stopping for a cold drink.
Is it because it's alcohol? And he thinks you shouldn't? Or shouldn't alone?
People have such warped ideas on these things .
If you have stopped at a cafe type place and had a coffee would that be ok ?

ginasevern · 16/08/2025 17:14

Sounds heavenly. He thinks it's weird because women don't do "that sort of thing" on their own I presume.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 16/08/2025 17:12

Sounds marvellous. Tell DH you'l be home at whatever time he says your dinner will be ready.

Enjoy! And well done!

Hollowvoice · 16/08/2025 17:11

I'm also wondering which bit is "weird" but you should definitely ignore him

AliceMaforethought · 16/08/2025 17:10

Tell him to do one. I often relax with a glass of something nice after shopping. The only 'weird' thing is him getting het up about it.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 16/08/2025 17:09

I live on my own and if I'm out somewhere and fancy a drink I'll damn' well have one!

Go, you.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 16/08/2025 17:07

Slange var, my dear, enjoy, in fact, have another 🥂

Bepo77 · 16/08/2025 17:07

Not weird at all. Cheers OP. Sorry your DH wants to take this moment from you. Does he by any chance enjoy you being trapped within four walls and find it threatening when you discover opportunities for independence?

Ohplesandbanonos · 16/08/2025 17:06

I often sit and have a glass of wine in a quiet bar or cafe alone - I travel a lot for work and after the long day people watching with a glass of wine in peace is the best relaxation!

Enjoy :-)

BitOutOfPractice · 16/08/2025 17:06

I think it’s a perfectly normal and lovely thing to do. And its Really made me happy to think of you doing it. Cheers @LazyLions!

Poppinjay · 16/08/2025 17:06

It would be interesting to know the balance of time to yourself between you and your DH. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he has regular breaks, social events, a hobby, gym-time, etc and you have none. However it would also be nice for you to prove me wrong.

stayathomer · 16/08/2025 17:05

Some people think it’s weird to do anything alone, I agree it looks like bliss!

commentsuncomfortable · 16/08/2025 16:46

I wouldn't do it personally but not really that weird

What bit wouldn't you do? I'm still confused about what is weird.

For example, right now, DD has a swimming lesson at a nearby hotel pool. We're all here as we were out and came straight here. DD is in her lesson with DH watching. I'm in hotel bar with dog having a lovely time reading MN with a half cider (no ice). Is it the fact I'm on my own that's weird? Or the alcohol? I also had a tea if that's any better and less weird

Christmashatglee · 16/08/2025 17:01

I spy a blackboard, anything nice on there to go with your cider? I love a small plate (or three).

myplace · 16/08/2025 17:01

He might struggle to adjust but it will do him good. Push back at anything that suggests you aren’t allowed time to yourself. Like all parents, it’s a balancing act.

Well done you for getting the medication, taking it, and getting out and about!

Arlanymor · 16/08/2025 17:00

So pleased that you're overcoming your anxiety and have ventured out alone - that's huge. And nothing wrong with a drink in the sunshine on the weekend - I'm going to my friend's home in an hour to sit on the balcony and drink a bit of wine before we go to the theatre - it's summer, enjoy the weather. Although I'm seeing friends today, I'm single, so sometimes I am the ONLY person available to enjoy some wine in the sunshine with! Iechyd da - as we say around my way!

RawBloomers · 16/08/2025 16:56

Ice in cider sounds weird! Taking a short time to enjoy peace and quiet with a drink on a Saturday afternoon sounds very normal.

Enjoy your down time, OP, recharging your batteries is especially essential for carers.

StrawberrySquash · 16/08/2025 16:53

popcornpower2025 · 16/08/2025 16:34

What bit is weird? Being out on your own? Having a drink on your own ( funny as men seem to be able to do this all the time)? Or the ice in your cider?.

It must be that they've put cider in a Cruzcampo glass. Shocking

MYBO · 16/08/2025 16:52

Not weird at all! I’d maybe try to do it more often! 🍺 Enjoy.

Cranberryavocado · 16/08/2025 16:51

Not weird at all. Enjoy. I do and would eat and drink alone sometimes.

LazyLions · 16/08/2025 16:41

He’s just phoned asking me when I’m coming home😬

That’s not right , sound like he preferred it when your world was smaller and you were more isolated 🧐

Mumofteenandtween · 16/08/2025 16:47

I’m doing exactly the same thing. I have my phone, my kindle, a sun hat and a picnic table in a pub beer garden. Life is pretty good really.
