What do you think of when you hear LGBTQ+?

It seems these days, when people see/hear LGBTQ+ they think of trans people & the trans debate. Is this accurate do you think? Or AIBU? I read on here recently about someone rejecting a rainbow badge given to her to wear at work to celebrate pride month (presumably not cos she was homophobic but rather, anti-trans). As a lesbian, this makes me really sad. I’ve always been proud to be a ‘rainbow family’ and want my kids to be proud too, but this association, and takeover imo, of the rainbow symbol & LGBTQ+ acronym by the gender ideology brigade, is creating, at best erasure of LGB people, and at worst, (maybe unintentional) homophobia and discrimination. I respect & understand that trans people have played an important role in the LGBT struggle historically, but it’s this ridiculous escalation of it & all these ‘trans trenders’ and being able to identify as one of 72 different genders etc 🙄

It's now been deleted, but I'm sure you remember what you said.

Yes I do! I said #hurtyfeelz ? Why the fuck was that deleted?? It's a flippant comment to suggest a straight man's feelings have been hurt by not being recognised as a woman. @mumsnet if you could clarify what I said that was delete worthy I'd be grateful? Unless I've accidentally quoted a tag that exists that represents something horrific that I'm not aware of it ?

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 16/08/2025 15:04

I associate it with trans.

I think that trying to conflate two separate concepts - sexual attraction and gender identity - into one thing is conceptually unsound.

The LGB part makes sense as a grouping as they all refer to who someone is sexually attracted to. But then adding on a hodgepodge of letters that relate to gender identity doesn’t make any sense.

Edited

I agree
I don't like the mix of sexuality and gender identity, it doesn't seem the same thing to me

i think of nothing, i dont give a fuck what your sexual orientation is, just be whatever you are in silence and stop pushing it in my face

I think you'll find queer people will be able to stop doing that when heteronormativity stops being a thing.

I think it’s the being “forced” to celebrate the sexual preferences of others ie wearing a rainbow badge when we don’t want to. I don’t want any group to be picked on or bullied but I’m not prepared to go far as to “celebrate” or “support”.

Agree with this completely. I'd have said no to the badge as well.

Jamesblonde2 · 16/08/2025 14:52

I agree OP, the oddballs have hijacked the meaning. Those who are standard homosexual don’t get a look in. I think those who are homosexual need to push back against it, as if heterosexuals do so, they will just be called haters.

indoorplantqueen · 16/08/2025 14:52

@BelperLawnmowerthat person is biologically a man. How is he not?

BelperLawnmower · 16/08/2025 14:51

Then the others cry "well where is your black lives matter badge ? Where is your baby loss awareness ribbon? Where's your supporting male survivors of domestic abuse badge ? Where's your Muslim support week ?

This is highly exclusionary, what about your poppy, your keffiyeh and 193 flags to represent all nations of the UN? Hmm

Honestly, I think of it as virtue signalling. I also think it’s strange to be ‘proud’ of being LGBTQI++ etc - I’m none of those, just a straight woman. I don’t feel pride about what is in fact something I can do absolutely nothing about. I feel proud about things I’ve achieved in my life, but sexuality isn’t one of those things.

I agree. acceptance and just 'being' was once the aim of the game - and I think we all agree anyone who disagrees with that probably has some phobic feelings.

But celebrating? Nobody needs to celebrate any sexuality or lack of.

Hedjwitch · 16/08/2025 14:46

I find the whole thing tedious. I don't give a fuck who you fuck and fail to see why I should. I avoid anything with rainbows on it.

BelperLawnmower · 16/08/2025 14:46

DidIdotheritething · 16/08/2025 11:57

I just think it’s anyone who isn’t straight.

Sorry, potentially transphobic! Many people in the T category regard themselves as straight. Someone born male who now identifies as a woman and is attracted to men will most likely identify as straight. Saying otherwise would suggest that that person is a man.

EveryDayisFriday · 16/08/2025 14:41

LGB make sense to be grouped as non hetro sexual attraction to others. A, is that asexual? Perhaps that could be included as relates to (non) sexual attraction.

The other letters (as far as I'm aware) are more about self expression and your feelings and identity and don't seem relevant to your attraction to others and actually can conflict with the sexual orientation (trans and same sex attraction).

I would have happily worn a rainbow lanyard/ badge/whatever to show that I am an ally to gay people. But I wouldn’t wear one now as I associate it with the TQ+ circus.

But you shouldn't have to "wear a rainbow lanyard" to show you support gay people. This is where the silliness and division started. Then big organisations starting tripping over each other to orgasm over their own virtue signalling to splash rainbows all over their shops. Worst thing is when embarrassingly the police and NHS started it. Never ever should have got involved. All workers should be 100% neutral to all people. That's literally our job. Wearing a rainbow lanyard as say a Dr, makes it look like anyone not wearing one doesn't support gay people. Then the others cry "well where is your black lives matter badge ? Where is your baby loss awareness ribbon? Where's your supporting male survivors of domestic abuse badge ? Where's your Muslim support week ? " And the NHS will cream it's proverbial knickers desperately knocking up these new things. I repeat : we do our job, we support all. anyone overtly displaying discrimination towards anyone should be dealt with. Neutrality means no flags/pins and badges/ribbons. It causes division and bias. They took Bibles out of hospital to aid neutrality, so practice what you bloody well preach and go the whole hog

mmsnet · 16/08/2025 14:34

Slightyamusedandsilly · 16/08/2025 14:33

I just hear 'Queer community' in all shapes and sizes.

Suns1nE · 16/08/2025 14:31

I avoid LGBTQ+ because as part of that + there is a movement by some to have paedofillia recognised as a sexual orientation under the term “minor attracted person” and I will not do anything to support something which in anyway supports that.

ForTheNightOrTheRestOfTime · 16/08/2025 14:25

I just 🙄. The regressive, harmful trans movement has fucked it. The LGB people I know refer to LGB which I fully support, they want no part of the rest.

DiscoBob · 16/08/2025 14:23

I take it that it's a set of letters meant to encapsulate all people who are gay or trans to varying degrees.

The 'plus' I would tend to kind of ignore. I've heard it can mean really disturbing fetishes which is not something I associate with normal attraction or feelings about one's own body.

If someone wanted to talk to me about trans issues specifically I'd expect them to be able to just say so. Same with lesbian or gay issues.

I wouldn't expect someone to use 'LGBTQ+' in actual spoken conversation. Unless they were running a training course or working in that field.

RH1234 · 16/08/2025 14:20

I wonder what the next letter or character will be. It seems to be getting longer and longer.

With that said it is important there isn’t discrimination against those with protected characteristics.
