What do you think of when you hear LGBTQ+?

It seems these days, when people see/hear LGBTQ+ they think of trans people & the trans debate. Is this accurate do you think? Or AIBU? I read on here recently about someone rejecting a rainbow badge given to her to wear at work to celebrate pride month (presumably not cos she was homophobic but rather, anti-trans). As a lesbian, this makes me really sad. I’ve always been proud to be a ‘rainbow family’ and want my kids to be proud too, but this association, and takeover imo, of the rainbow symbol & LGBTQ+ acronym by the gender ideology brigade, is creating, at best erasure of LGB people, and at worst, (maybe unintentional) homophobia and discrimination. I respect & understand that trans people have played an important role in the LGBT struggle historically, but it’s this ridiculous escalation of it & all these ‘trans trenders’ and being able to identify as one of 72 different genders etc 🙄

And that rainbows aren't nice any more. I also can't forget that rainbows in windows = childhoods stolen by lockdown.

Rainbows are still a beautiful natural phenomena to me. Always cheers me up if I catch sight of one on a rainy day with the sun peeking through.

Lesbian gay bi trans and queer people

This, same

MangoHabanero · 16/08/2025 16:02

I see LGBTQ+ and I think of gender ideology and misogyny.

Not a chance I would wear anything with the rainbow flag (see above).

@Millytante I can’t disagree with any of your points!

TwoWheelz · 16/08/2025 15:54

it’s two separate groups of people … LBG being about sexual attraction and the TG + part being about identity.

It sounds like the employer was overstepping by giving out rainbow badges for staff to wear. In my mind this is the same as asking staff to add pronoun signatures to emails. It’s really nobody’s business what peoples pronouns are or even if they believe in pronouns, nobody should be cornered into wearing a badge or having a pronoun signature.

There aren’t many young lesbians left - most of them are trans men - transing the gay away.

Is there any quantifiable data on this? Just curious, and I don't have any real insight into this community.

Honestly, I think of it as virtue signalling. I also think it’s strange to be ‘proud’ of being LGBTQI++ etc - I’m none of those, just a straight woman. I don’t feel pride about what is in fact something I can do absolutely nothing about. I feel proud about things I’ve achieved in my life, but sexuality isn’t one of those things.

I’d think declaring one’s pride, after years and years enforced shame and guilt (not to mention literal criminality) within our society, was entirely understandable. Thus I’d see the continuation of Pride events as still legit under that name, and especially since the scummy tide of hatred wasn’t stemmed in full anyway, and indeed has risen in some quarters.
But still, that joyous LGB message of self-confidence and mutual support has been besmirched with incursions by newer themes inimical to Pride’s original embrace, I think. (Above all, it’s flipping disgraceful to read so often about lesbians being accused of bigotry by men who seek access to lesbianism.)

This aggressive demand for access, recognition, and reclassification through legal threats surely won’t leave behind it any legacy of pride, unless bullying and menace constitute the highest point in a person’s development.

History, according to Joyce, is a nightmare from which we are struggling to awaken. Well this feels true of our current societal struggles.
It’s like we are all Z-drugged to the eyeballs, sleepwalking around the place while unconscionable developments overtake us. We are trying to scream in protest, but we aren’t being heard!
Women’s hard-won legal rights aren’t going to be reversed in the courts at this stage, therefore (NotAll™️) men found other ways to erode territory and confidence, and deep misogyny now wears the face of extreme female caricature.
I reckon this has all become a vast and vicious assault under the guise of a plea for tolerance, and Pride is now being used as a false flag while a major crime is being perpetrated on half the population.
I’ve no idea how that rainbow can be reclaimed from grubby mitts, and I’ve no alphabetical dog in the race myself, but I hope to God something changes soon or it’ll be a hell of a problem to undo all the strife and woe caused by invading TAs.

(sorry, @Soontobe60 …..got awfully carried away there, and rather away from your point)

I think you'll find queer people will be able to stop doing that when heteronormativity stops being a thing.

What is your definition of ‘queer’?

scalt · 16/08/2025 15:49

Soon, there won't be enough letters in the alphabet to cover all the categories.

blubberyboo · 16/08/2025 15:45

Given that the phrase "LGBTQ+" is clearly stating that it supports people who think they have changed sex over women's rights then I automatically assume anyone wearing their emblems of propaganda are also against the rights of women and girls to have bodily autonomy away from males.

I therefore would not wear their emblems at work or anywhere else. I do not wish to associate with people who believe that and who actively fight against women's basic decency.

Ordinary gay people who just want to live and marry people of consensual age ..thats fine. Don't care.

But bring out the flags and emblems you are immediately declaring a side and a war on women.

As a lesbian, it makes me think of forced teaming and the homophobia that everything after the LGB is engaging in. I think especially of the poor younger lesbians upon whom men larping as lesbians are trying to force themselves.

I don't think asexuality is nonsense. There are people for whom it describes their orientation.

But I don't see what the big deal is either. No one is being forced to have sexual relationships and a percentage of humans have always opted out of this. I don't see why it needs a parade.

I mostly agree, but I don’t see how asexuality is an orientation?
I also know too many women who married, identified as asexual after having a baby, then realised they were lesbians. In some communities there’s a real pattern to it.

CurlewKate · 16/08/2025 15:22

I think first of all I cannot bring myself to use the word queer because i believe ng to a generation where the word was often followed by a baseball cap or a steel toe cap. Then I think that being trans is not a sexuality. Then I think that LGB people need to be very watchful about what is happening in the USA-rights are hard won and easily lost.

Yes. I believe gay marriage will be taken away at some point in US.

bumblingbovine49 · 16/08/2025 15:39

I just inwardly roll my eyes and think LGB I understand. They have a history of being violently and appallingly treated for the fact that they tend to fall in romantic love ( and lust) with people of the same sex. Because of historical violent oppression alone I am happy to support anything that stops our society going back to that and to support efforts to improve things in other countries where things are worse for LGB.

However the TQ+, confuses me. The Q just seems to be about gaining acceptance for anyone outside the 'status quo' but that is for me just about accepting people in their uniqueness which is just what we should do and not related directly only to sexuality so not really related to LGB specifically

As for T, that seems to be in direct opposition to LGB as it makes sex into something unimportant or non existent. If sex is mutable then why can't a gay man find a body with female genitalia attractive if the woman believes she is a man?

For LGB people, their sex is core and important to how they define themselves and I'd say for most -L an G in particular - it is particularly important abd directly in contradiction with the views of most T.

I just don't get how they all go together, except that T an Q( in particular) are so unhappy to be considered 'normal or straight' that they have hung onto the coattails of LGB to get recognition and influence' . They have done this by stealh by pretending to have the same aims a LGB, all the while pushing their own, often directly conflicting agenda

So generally I support LGB but not TQ, like lots on here

People with DSDs have repeatedly asked not to be referred to as intersex and specifically asked not to be lumped in with the alphabet soup.

TheKeatingFive · 16/08/2025 15:21

It's force teaming of the worst kind.

The T&Q have nothing to do with the LGB and often their priorities are in conflict. Lesbians have been totally screwed over by TRAs for example. I don't even want to know what the + is supposed to be about.

Pride was a brilliant thing when it was about people with a range of sexualities campaigning for visibility and acceptance to be themselves. Now it's been hijacked by people who are looking for a cause and a special identity, but can't quite even articulate what they're fighting for.

SquishedMallow · 16/08/2025 15:11

Yeh I've just googled it and it means exactly what I intended it to mean. No idea why it was deleted then @mumsnet ? Saying 'hurtyfeelz' with regards to men feeling offended at not being recognised as a woman seems proportionate to me ? But every day is an eye opener on here.
