What do you think of when you hear LGBTQ+?

It seems these days, when people see/hear LGBTQ+ they think of trans people & the trans debate. Is this accurate do you think? Or AIBU? I read on here recently about someone rejecting a rainbow badge given to her to wear at work to celebrate pride month (presumably not cos she was homophobic but rather, anti-trans). As a lesbian, this makes me really sad. I’ve always been proud to be a ‘rainbow family’ and want my kids to be proud too, but this association, and takeover imo, of the rainbow symbol & LGBTQ+ acronym by the gender ideology brigade, is creating, at best erasure of LGB people, and at worst, (maybe unintentional) homophobia and discrimination. I respect & understand that trans people have played an important role in the LGBT struggle historically, but it’s this ridiculous escalation of it & all these ‘trans trenders’ and being able to identify as one of 72 different genders etc 🙄

I just sign and wonder why other people's bedroom gender preferences are my concern/problem and being shoved in my face. Absolutely support the rights of all sexualities etc but definitely not sure what it has to do in the workplace where all this should be left at the door (along with pronouns).

Oh I so agree with this. Last year my organisation had a navel gazing piece on our intranet from some woman who identified as bisexual. On and on she went about how she’d come out at work and so had her ‘boyfriend’ and they were so happy to ‘be themselves’ at work. All the time I’m thinking why do I need to know what your sexual preferences are? Why do I need to know that Janet from accounts likes to have sex with men and women as long as I get paid on time. Maybe the next intranet piece could be about someone with a foot fetish 😂

Then after reading all that I remembered that my adult son had said he was ‘bi’ a few years ago. No fanfare, no drama, no navel gazing. I’m sure he hasn’t written a piece on it his intranet at work. He just gets on with it and I don’t care if he brings a male or female home.

I roll my eyes and assume it’s all about the TQ and is probably misogynistic and homophobic.

@purpledaze24 can you give examples of the important role trans people played in obtaining rights for same sex attracted people?

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 16/08/2025 12:17

I see lgb as a statement of fact and heave a sigh of relief, when it comes with the extended alphabet I'm braced for political rhetoric and naval gazing.

Spicynoodlesheal · 16/08/2025 12:17

Im a lesbian. I went to the brighton pride parade this year and found that it was very trans heavy, completely took over. I dont usually go to prides as dont feel represented anymore. But my new girlfriend is newly out and embracing the rainbows

PollyBell · 16/08/2025 12:14

As little as possible but I cant keep up with the letter variations land wonder what letter or symbols will they want to add next

Snorlaxo · 16/08/2025 12:14

I always assumed + was because they were yet to invent some more alphabet groups.

Moltenpink · 16/08/2025 12:13

Posted twice.

Moltenpink · 16/08/2025 12:12

Honestly? The “+” kind of annoys me. It makes me think, anyone can make anything up to identify as, then claim discrimination. I don’t get how the “Q” is different to some of the other letters either. It wouldn’t stop me supporting Pride values though.

If I see “LGB” by itself, I think of the original lesbian, gay and bi causes.

As soon as they add TQA+++ etc, I think of all the painful, blue-haired, often straight-but-special brigade who erase women’s rights and completely dominate the space. The focus on them completely obliterates the visibility and needs of any LGB element.

Oh goodness. "blue haired" again. 🙄

NightPuffins · 16/08/2025 12:09

I don’t think only of trans people when I see the full acronym. But as a “B” I don’t engage at all in the LGBTQ+ community because I just don’t see myself belonging, fitting in or represented there.

I also agree with the comment above that the group should be separate - the struggle in life based on which gender you are sexually attracted to is so very different from the struggle in life of what gender you are yourself. Why lump them together?

Hadalifeonce · 16/08/2025 12:08

I always wonder whether they are referring to LGB, or all the rest of the alphabet which gets tagged on.

ninjahamster · 16/08/2025 12:07

I think of the whole community, including trans.

DeLaRuiz · 16/08/2025 12:06

Really bored of rainbow propaganda. Forced inclusiveness of people who want nothing to do with the unbalanced ideology. A kind of fascism and definitely thought police.

WhatNoRaisins · 16/08/2025 12:04

I tend to think anyone that isn't straight. Personally I don't tend to use that term as I can never keep up with all the letters and it's easy to say something wrong and get it in the neck.

Vintagenow · 16/08/2025 12:04

Honestly, I think why are the LGB community not more pissed off at the rest jumping on the bandwagon and tagging their letters onto LGB. LGB describes someone's sexuality, the rest is just nonsense and nothing to do with sexuality.

araiwa · 16/08/2025 11:49

Lesbian gay bi trans and queer people

Same here. I don't give any more emphasis to one part as opposed to another.

HansHolbein · 16/08/2025 12:02

I think ‘boring’ - bored of hearing about it, to be honest.

I would also refuse to wear any kind of badge and I would refuse any pronoun changes on emails/letters.

And no, I don’t hate anyone or have a phobia of anyone that is in that group. As long as people are good human beings, that’s all that matters to me.

Fordian · 16/08/2025 12:01

The TQIA takeover has been so successful I don’t think you can say ‘LGB’ anymore, though I make a point of doing so!

I associate LGBTQIA+ with primarily the erasure of women’s rights but also the increasing risks to hard won gay equality.

I also haven’t swallowed the Koolaid of ‘trans having played an important role in the LGBT struggle historically’. They didn’t. Transvestites and drag queens maybe. But none of those men in female clothing believed a) they had actually changed sex, and b) that that entitled them to violate female spaces. The TRA overreach stands to do harm to gay people, as the lesbians warned when T force-teamed with LGB, and Stonewall became exclusively a trans ‘rights’ organisation.

I politely decline rainbow lanyards because I think LGB have achieved what they set out to do, as I believe do many gay people. The only difference between them and me is what they do in the bedroom, and that doesn’t need celebrating, as such.

Brefugee · 16/08/2025 12:00

also, and not many people notice when i'm speaking, i just say LGB and if anyone says "you forgot the TQ+" i say "no, i didn't" or "oh, you know it's what i grew up with"

depending on audience

Womanofcustard · 16/08/2025 12:00

I’m old and I can’t bear the use of ‘Queer’, it’s deeply insulting.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 16/08/2025 12:00

It makes me sick. I hate it.

I just think it’s anyone who isn’t straight.
