To be sick of the royal propaganda the UK is fed?

I know most people don’t give a damn about the Windsors any more .

However , in a week when we learn about Philip’s affairs - notably with Sarah Ferguson’s mother ( all covered up of course like the rest of their debachery) we are now expected to swallow the line that William and Kate’s next mansion is ‘paid for by William and Kate themselves ‘

No . That’s not the complete truth .Every penny the Windsors have , they have taken from the people . We now know William and Charles make millions from public services like the NHS schools and charities . We only know about this as a result of dogged journalistic digging . And most of the mainstream media barely covered the scandal .

There are many threads here about how the UK is in steep decline and how people are suffering . Yet the royals are taking in half a billion a year and charging charities on top !

At least admit to us that all their money is stolen from us ?

Oh and if you haven’t heard the queen knew all about Andrew pocketing money via ‘pitch at the palace’

She was told repeatedly by officials . She did nothing
Can we have some facts please ?
The Windsors are a total facade - they are all like Andrew - he’s just the latest fall guy .

William and Kate are still very popular. In March of this year 74% off the British public had a positive impression of them.

Charles and Camilla aren't so popular but I think the majority of the public would like to see William and Catherine as King and Queen.

That will be 74% of the survey which is completely different to 74% of.the British public.

What gets me is that when Parliament was illegally prorogued by Johnson, the Royal family, which is SUPPOSED to act as one of the last ditch checks and balances on Government, was either unable or unwilling to do anything. It showed just how bloody useless and redundant it was.

Yes... this was when I thought 'what the fuck are you for'.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/08/2025 15:20

The British constitution isn't something that you'd invent today, but its inbuilt protections and balances are vastly powerful compared to other countries

I don't know if you've noticed, @cranfordscones, but we don't actually have a formal, written constitution - just a mishmash of custom and precedent which can be tweaked this way and that according to the taste of whoever in power

Some of us consider this a glaring omission, but I guess that's really one for a different thread

Ukisgaslit · 16/08/2025 15:10

The general consensus is a figurehead president.

Nothing convoluted about it

Doesn’t Scotland print its own currency? They seem to cope
Multiple European nations switched to the euro overnight .

Furthermore I suspect any talk of reform ( like paying all their taxes!) and the Windsors will walk .
And you know what will happen?
Nothing
Just like when Elizabeth died after 70 years on the throne . Left a legacy of a big fat nothing
(If you overlook the mess she made of her own family and the 170 laws she made sure didn’t apply to them )

The royals do pay tax - that changed under Queen Elizabeth. I’m not fussed about the royal family but I am unconvinced a president would cost less.

I agree there's little reason to assume a president would cost less, but it's worth remembering that Charles and William only pay tax "voluntarily^, and not at all on some income which for anyone else would be taxed automatically

Btw ridding ourselves of the royals is not the Herculean task you pretend it is

Other countries have done it with little difficulty, both recently and post war

Unless there's some sort of coup then there are tens of thousands of decisions that would need to be made - from very small issues (what happens to the currency) to very large ones (what form of head of state will replace the monarch).

All of those will require briefs, proposals, committee discussions, decisions, perhaps votes in parliament.

Scheduling and funding that is huge.

There has been no other country with a constitutional monarchy like the UK becoming a republic in modern times.

‘constitutional monarchy ‘ is a fig leaf of a term

We live with feudal remnants .
That all need reform . And I’ve little doubt that previous generations of royals were as corrupt as the current lot but we know more now , despite every obstruction put in the way of anyone asking questions

  • see Andrew Lownies attempts to uncover papers related to Mountbatten

As for the politicians - the 14 years of tories did a lot to row back on reforms re the royals . As I mentioned upthread - the tories did away with the civil list - which at least allowed for limited debate each year

The victorians were more reform minded re the royals than we appear to be .

Btw there was a labour MP who after the last election refused to swear allegiance to Charles and was told if he didn’t he could not do his work as an MP

We can start with getting rid of that swearing to Charles nonsense

Edited

Sounds like you need a lot more than one Labour MP onside to lobby for changes to the Parliamentary Oaths act then.

Are you aware that is next to impossible for MPs to discuss the Windsors in parliament ?

They can accuse others of crimes using parliamentary privilege but they are prevented from debating the Windsors !
Thats what stops debate

Mps must also swear allegiance to Charles . Not to the electorate or the nation

What more do you need to know about the state of this country ?!

But the monarch isn’t forcing parliament to have these rules by threatening them with a cannon!

Parliament can decide to change the ‘rules’ on that anytime they want to.

Why do you think they haven’t already?

wordler · 16/08/2025 14:33

Ukisgaslit · 16/08/2025 14:24

@wordler

No I did not say a referendum

Although the issue re the Windsor is a simple one unlike the Brexit mess

I would ask for a question added to a ballot paper . Just to see roughly where we stand

But it’s not a question about the ‘Windsors’ it’s a question of changing the system of how our government is run.

It’s removing the constitutional monarchy from all the many branches of our society that it’s currently bound to - it affects the local and National governance, the legal system, the armed forces, the church, the currency, the management of historical archives and the royal art collections. It affects thousands of jobs and positions across four countries.

It’s the work of decades and will cost billions.

Of course once it’s done you don’t have to pay for it again.

But making that change is a political mine field that would make Brexit look like a quick and easy job.

And they all have a very, very long summer break, here and abroad
And the great PR machine spits out some pre- recorded messages ( POW and nature) and snippets of information ( new house) to make us believe they are amongst us and working

Not to mention a further six weeks or so at Christmas, from mid December until late January. Nice.

Can we please start with holding the Windsors accountable for their offences . If they have nothing to fear why the decades of cover ups ?

@SandyDunesCoffeeShack

If you re read my post I said YOU
selected Putin and Trump as examples of presidents as royalists always do .

Yes they use the term ‘president ‘ but surely you are aware that both are from systems with executive presidents .
They are therefore irrelevant

Mountbatten was a kiddy fiddler? Really? Who knew?

Well, Private Eye for one. It has published many stories on Lord Louis, quoting contemporaries who served under him in the Navy (…) and after.
(Unless whackamole666 is being somewhat, er, disingenuous)

Do you agree that we should ALL be asked if we are happy to continue shovelling half a billion the Windsors way .
And with getting laziness greed and sex offenders in return ?

If you mean a referendum - particularly the type of binary yes or no referendum that we had with Brexit, then no.

But I would encourage all republicans to lobby their MPs for changes to the current system, more transparency etc right up to lobbying for a change in the parliamentary system.

If enough politicians feel that it’s important enough to their constituents that they risk their jobs if they don’t lobby for change then something will get done.

I , and I suspect many readers share this feeling , am so so tired of this nonsense

You have selected Trump and Putin .
Both representing completely different political systems from that of the UK

Totally irrelevant to our situation .

Plus many of us want to start with holding the Windsors accountable ! Can we start with that?

Putin wasn't selected

@PoppingbyThanks for your post

No - this is all fact
Andrew Lownie - a respected writer who spent his own inheritance trying to access hidden facts about Mountbatten ( dear uncle dickie to the Windsors - Mountbatten was a pedophile who abused boys in care homes )
has written a bio of Andrew .
Philips affairs is the least of it

Goes lord Porchester get much of a mention?

AntiBullshit · 16/08/2025 14:02

Aren’t the affairs Philip had the reason his Will is closed for 100 years or so to cover up any of kiddies he may have had?
