To think that the USA is a dictatorship now?

Trump appears to have ultimate power. Who can challenge him? Who controls him? Presidents should not be dictating what drug companies charge for medicines on a whim, or indeed any other goods, at the drop of a hat. He says jump and the US says "How High?" What on earth have you done to yourselves and the world to let this evil, thick, orange toddler clown represent you? What the hell were you thinking?

Except that private universities have no right to Federal funding. It's purely discretionary. If they want to behave as political actors and in ways that violate civil rights law, they can have that funding withdrawn.

I did not say they have a right to Federal funding did I? The conversation was about Free Speech and how the administration responds to speech they disagree with.

What you are now doing is called “moving the goalposts”.

MissConductUS · 17/08/2025 18:30

JHound · 17/08/2025 18:26

It’s not though. I have already shown that the threat about removing funding was not within the narrow context of violent acts.

No matter how much you want to pretend otherwise. (This is the same man who defended and pardoned the Capitol.

If you plead guilty, as Connolly did, it’s pretty obvious that you go straight to sentence. What do you expect to happen? A jury of 12 people found Jones not guilty. It’s quite obviously not the same.

I think one of the biggest disparities is that she was held on the remand without option of bail and he was released for a year to get his ducks in a row. And a fake ADHD diagnosis.

The actions are taken against the universities that knowingly permitted violations of title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

And lots of laws were broken by the pro Gaza protestors. Vandalism, breaking into buildings, resisting arrest, trespassing, blocking traffic, etc. At Columbia, they blocked access to classroom buildings so that no one could attend classes. Your right to swing your fist stops at the other persons nose.

Alot of TDS on here. I've just looked it up and his approval rating is -12% with the American public. Starmers is -43% with the British public and he's only 1 year into his first term unlike Trump so he's WAY less popular. Posters on here probably think it's because the public are ignorant or could be because the American public know way more about America than aload of people thousands of miles away who get all their info from the BBC/Guardian. And ridiculous to blame Trump for all the problems in America, most of the drug/homeless problems are in Dem run states and local govt has way more power than in the UK.

You're talking out of your ass.
Where the heck did you get your figures from?
Don't spout made up figures at least without providing a credible recognized source
These are from professional polls:
A June 2025 Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Trump's overall approval rating at 42%, consistent with previous months.

They are not simply opposing “violence and harassment of Jews”.
Their issue is all protests showing support for Gaza which are all labelled “illegal”.

Trying to reframe and and every pro-Palestinian protest as necessarily about harassing and violence against Jews is exactly how they attack Free Speech.

Defending the rights of Jewish students is obviously justified; using those incidents to put political pressure on institutions they don't like and impose a sweeping anti-diversity agenda, not so fine.

That's actually a separate issue. The Supreme Court outlawed race based admissions and programs in high education in 2023.

https://law.stanford.edu/2023/12/12/students-for-fair-admissions-v-harvard-faq-navigating-the-evolving-implications-of-the-courts-ruling

Many universities ignored the ruling, so they're being required to comply.

If you want to criticize what happens in the US, try to keep up with the news from here.

It’s going a little bit further than merely upholding the Supreme Court 2023 ruling on university admissions though isn’t it?

I understand British dislike of Trump far more than Trump’s obsession with the Mayor of London or Barack Obama….

(Personally I find Trump to be a buffoon and highly problematic as well as a bigot. But when he is only behaving in a way that impacts the USA I don’t care about him).

Loads of Brit’s will have an opinion on the US president because the USA’s policy decisions often impacts the rest of us.

or calling for censure of / penalties against universities that allow free protest shows it’s only “Free Speech” when they agree with what is being said.

Peaceful protests would have been fine. When they give rise to violence and harassment of Jewish students, it because a violation of Title V of the Civil Rights act and was quite rightly investigated and dealt with. Jewish students have rights too.

I live in the US and its not a dictatorship. Many of us are quite happy with Trump. The UK elected Starmer who is the most incompetent and worthless PM in my lifetime. You should be worrying more about your loss of freedom of speech and civil liberties, the two-tier justice system you have, the crumbling NHS and the overwhelming increase in crime rate and unfettered illegal immigration. I no longer recognize the UK when I go back and definitely do not feel safe. But yes, by all means, have a superior smug dig at Trump and those that voted for him.

CRT in schools has been a hot-potato topic for a few years now. Give it a quick Google.

The Democrats failed to stop some of the more out-there craziness, like trans women being allowed to compete in women's sports, and extreme radical-left activists have driven a lot of people crazy in the ways I mentioned. It's my theory that these societal influences have pushed many people to the right, and that they voted for Trump hoping he would put a stop to what he could. JMO.

I am well aware of the claims made about CRT. But social gossips and rumours aren’t facts.
Having details on schools that are teaching all white people are racist would be facts so I was interested to know which schools they are.

He took over a thriving economy from Obama. His steel tariffs saved a handful of jobs in the steel industry but cost many jobs in manufacturing. His failure to deal promptly with the covid pandemic lead to high inflation that was quickly brought under control by Biden.

Now, never mind about the past, what is he up to in the present? Biden passed on an economy in good shape, with inflation back under control. Now look what he's doing. Rounding up farm labourers has resulted in produce prices shooting up 38.9% (at a time of year when they'd usually drop following the harvest). Core producer inflation is 3.3% (against a target of 2%).

Farms are struggling - they've got no labour, no environmental grant funding, no USAID buying grain for the third world and their export markets are looking elsewhere. Perfect time for the billionaires to buy up all the land at rock-bottom prices though.

The last time that a Republican administration plotted protectionist tariffs on this scale it caused the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression.

Meanwhile said child-rapist is rolling out the red carpet to child-snatcher Vladimir Putin.

POTUS trump commited around $4-5 trillion to fight COVID. Operation ward speed helped us to get the vaccine.

Why are you calling him a child rapist?

But what's happening now is going beyond making them comply with an older ruling. It is clearly serving an ideological agenda. The executive order on DEI has also already had a negative impact on academic research. This whole attack on higher education is not 'just' about fair admissions, it's about interfering with academic appointments and curriculums. In fact, it's not about meritocracy at all. Meritocracy is what they're using to excuse a return to the bad old days.

It's all being litigated in the courts, which will decide which remedies are appropriate and which aren't.

Academic appointments are relevant if discrimination is built into the process by favoring candidates based on race. Curriculum can be relevant too, if it fosters discrimination or race based bias.

Read your history books and take a look at countries with actual dictators.

There are a lot of evil people in this world, including some evil heads of state. Have yet to see a single "evil" thing Trump has done.

Also, he absolutely has a ton of pushback in the USA, not just from all branches of the government, but especially from most media sources. Probably the ones you watch!

Sure, right now the senate and the house are republicans, too...but the people voted for this, and in no way does that make Trump a dictator or the US an authoritarian government. That's not how the country's political system works.

You sound incredibly out of touch with reality. For example, a US president could never just cancel an election.

Your paranoia is extreme. There is really no use in even bothering to write this post, because you don't want to educate yourself, you just want to be hysterical.

@MyLittleNest would you like a list?

Deporting people with no criminal record to CECOT where they get tortured is a start.

And do you think that Hitler started with the Final Solution? No, it took 10 years to build up to that.

In his first term the economy was great and thriving until COVID. He expanded the EITC, cut corporate taxes and the economy grew and US employment was at a record low. Wages grew as well. He had successful foreign policy by defeating ISIS and he negotiated peace in the middle east with the Abraham accords.

He took over a thriving economy from Obama. His steel tariffs saved a handful of jobs in the steel industry but cost many jobs in manufacturing. His failure to deal promptly with the covid pandemic lead to high inflation that was quickly brought under control by Biden.

It is important to recognize that the governors of each US state hold an enormous amount of power. Most people feel the impact of their state's laws and regulations more than the federal ones. Covid was a glaring example of this, and Trump was in office for part of that time.

Trump has been very vocal about leaving many big issues up to each state to decide, abortion and covid rules to name a couple.

All while either trying to work through it or losing your job due to a lack of paid sick leave.

This administration and the writers of Project 2025 pushing their ideology in the background are most definitely not women's rights advocates.

I’m not suggesting they are. I’m saying that women’s rights in many UK, and probably US, universities were assaulted by a tidal wave of aggressive trans nonsense.
