To think that the USA is a dictatorship now?

Trump appears to have ultimate power. Who can challenge him? Who controls him? Presidents should not be dictating what drug companies charge for medicines on a whim, or indeed any other goods, at the drop of a hat. He says jump and the US says "How High?" What on earth have you done to yourselves and the world to let this evil, thick, orange toddler clown represent you? What the hell were you thinking?

Great thread OP. I love that while you furiously denounce Trump for being a fascist ending democracy, what has actually really got you riled up is ...the price of your weight loss jabs going up.

Sums up our "progressive" liberal left in their solipsistic complacency.

Perfect 👏This is them all over.

To the fine folks on this thread trying to reason with Trump fans; just know that you're not talking to people who can be rational about this.

Pot kettle springs to mind.

What is the pot to the Trump fan kettle?

They are not being held without due process. They are being detained while an immigration judge processes their removal. NO ONE is going against the law or the Constitution. It is illegal to enter the US without prior approval. It is illegal to overstay a visa. All of these laws are on the books and have been for decades. They are just finally being enforced.

As for DC, guess what DC means? District of Columbia, another word for the federal government. DC has ALWAYS been under the purview of the federal government, but the responsibility for policing themselves was given to the residents who obviously couldn't handle the responsibility. It devolved into a lawless shithole, to the point where elected officials had to hire body guards or carry firearms themselves and staffers were being attacked in broad daylight.

The amount of ignorance on MN always astounds me.

Also, re due process...

Except that, while there may be some debate about the exact figures, violent crime has been falling...

Is crime in Washington really out of control as Trump claims?

President Trump says he will deploy hundreds of troops to Washington DC to address crime there.

To the fine folks on this thread trying to reason with Trump fans; just know that you're not talking to people who can be rational about this. They actually know what a monster he is and that the things you are saying about him are true. They will make a pretence of saying he's being wrongly accused, that it's fake news, the deep state, blablabla, but they know it's true. They just don't care. That's they key to understanding them. They like that he's evil because it makes them feel safe. That sounds strange when you first hear it, but it's because they feel America, and therefore themselves personally, are well protected when the leader is a psychopath who will stop at nothing. That's the appeal all vicious despots have. It's why Putin is popular in Russia.
These people are like children who, when they feel threatened by another child's aggression, boast that their father will beat up the other child's father. I try to determine if somebody is a Trump supporter before talking to them at length. If they are, I know not to waste my time. It really is hopeless and unfortunately, that's down to human psychology.

TinyIsMyNewt · 17/08/2025 20:50

Incidentally, if anyone wants to see an actual two-tier justice system, the US is a good example.

If anyone else had done the things Trump had done (Jan 6, theft and sharing of classified documents, for a start) they'd be in prison for decades.

And that's before getting into him weaponozing it to go after political opponents (and, in my view most appallingly, Jack Smith) and deporting people illegally.

BruFord · 17/08/2025 20:13

spoonbillstretford · 15/08/2025 21:41

It's not in a state and certainly not compared to the US. We have a proper political and legal system with checks and balances and an independent system. We have free and accessible healthcare, not the scraps thrown to you occasionally after emptying your wallets into insurance. We have at least five weeks annual leave a year and proper matenity leave and sound employment rights. We have a very safe, tolerant country where we can freely express our views without fear of reprisal. We have largely very good race and gender relations. We don't have guns and violent crime is low. We don't have hundreds of kids killed by lone gumen a year in schools - in fact, like in most countries without a gun culture, we usually have zero school shootings in a year, unlike the US which averages one a week. Women can get safe, free abortions and contraception without fear of ptosecution or persecution. The US is seriously fucked up and is fast going to hell in a handcart with an orange rapist dictator.

@spoonbillstretford Remember though that what you’re describing re. healthcare, access to guns, etc. is the way it’s been in the US forever, it’s nothing new. Re. Abortion. To prevent a possible overturning of Roe vs. Wade, Congress should have acted decades ago, but they didn’t. Each state now has its own laws on the issue.

It's all online, if you care to look it up.

There's a lot of right wing screeching about CRT, and you can find examples, particularly out-of-contezt ones, where it looks daft (as you can with most things).

But criticism of CRT is mostly just stupid hyperbole.

And no, it does not teach that all white people are racist.

Horsie · 17/08/2025 19:40

JHound · 17/08/2025 17:52

I am well aware of the claims made about CRT. But social gossips and rumours aren’t facts.
Having details on schools that are teaching all white people are racist would be facts so I was interested to know which schools they are.

It's all online, if you care to look it up.

You've missed a point.
She was put in remand immediately until the trial was held.
He was let go on bail until his trial which was around one year later.

You're talking out of your ass.
Where the heck did you get your figures from?
Don't spout made up figures at least without providing a credible recognized source
These are from professional polls:
A June 2025 Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Trump's overall approval rating at 42%, consistent with previous months.

Rasmussen, one of the few polls who called the 2024 election correctly, has Trump at 49% overall approval rating as of Aug. 15.

Amazing that people will run to obviously biased polls that had Kamala winning by several points to try to say Trump is unpopular. Trump's approval in this term is running much higher than it did in his first term.

Goalpost shifting.

Again, you were the one who brought the whole topic of funding into the thread, not me, so it's a bit hard for me to be "goalpost shifting", and repeating yourself ad nauseam isn't making it any clearer.

LifeExperience · 17/08/2025 19:16

spoonbillstretford · 15/08/2025 22:34

We have laws against inciting racial hatred and against rioting, violence and causing criminal damage. People were charged, tried, and found guilty of breaking the law using lawful processes, and sentenced to a few months in prison. US sentencing is usually much harsher - people wouldn't see the light of day for years.

And now in the US people with the wrong coloured skin or accent are disappearing without lawful process or appeal. Get your own house in order. Good luck with voting out a dictator.

I think what she said was a horrible rude, disgusting comment. I vehemently disagree with it. But I don't think the sentence should have been custodial.

I think one of the biggest disparities is that she was held on the remand without option of bail and he was released for a year to get his ducks in a row. And a fake ADHD diagnosis.

You were the one who brought up Federal funding.

I have already shown that the threat about removing funding was not within the narrow context of violent acts.

I ve read various stuff on cuts to scientific funding, up to 80%... Trump went on about trans mice, not realising the whole point was hormone research but then this is the guy that thought injecting bleach was worth looking into

Which may be good news for us, now we are back in Horizon.

The whole TACO thing gets me though, whether its tariffs or the strange hold Putin has over him, he doesn't follow up on threats made.

MissConductUS · 17/08/2025 18:47

JHound · 17/08/2025 18:44

Where within that do I say “they have a right to Federal funding”?

Calling out their weak commitment to Free Speech, using the example of Trump calling for financial consequences (in this case freezing federal funds) for universities that allow protest he disapproves is not, in any way shape or form me saying they have a right to federal funds.

But you knew that.

I did not say they have a right to Federal funding did I? The conversation was about Free Speech and how the administration responds to speech they disagree with.
