Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

OP posts:

Of course it’s disgusting, it sometimes really stinks! But even more disgusting would be a child falling it/someone stepping in it, so it gets picked up. I hate accidentally picking up some other dog’s poo, cold dog poo is, for some reason, particularly horrible.

IceMaidenIceBear · 15/08/2025 15:46

In agreement with many others - cat poo is far worse to deal with than dog! There is no smell on earth worse than the tail of a long haired cat with diarrhoea.

Our cats have also sometimes made poo stains on our furniture and rugs, but we've never had any similar issues with our equally long coated dogs.

Along with revulsion at picking up the poo, I can’t get my head around the fact that people allow their dogs to sit on furniture and sleep in their beds with their bum holes touching the fabric etc where the poo came out. Makes me gag thinking about it. (The dog’s bum holes. Though human ones are equally gross)

Dogs' arseholes are surprisingly clean. Probably cleaner than most people's hands.

When a dog defecates, the anal opening everts slightly; basically, the muscular ring pushes outward so the stool can pass cleanly.

Once they’re done, the sphincter contracts and the tissue (with any residue traces) retracts back inside the body, sealing the opening.

Humans don’t have the same clean-snap closure and err...pop out muscular ring around our arsehole, which is why we need to wipe.

Dogs’ anatomy is built to leave no residue behind. which is handy, since they're covered in fur.

It's a brilliant design.

i have small dog for precisely this reason. her poops are lucky to be the size of my pinkie. I couldn't deal with steaming piles of shit mountins.

Funnily enough my friend's tiny dog does massive turds and my medium dog does small ones. Prior to this I always assumed the size correlated!

OP I don't love the dog poo AT ALL. However in general I know that growing up in a household with a dog is good for the immune system, and you do get used to using poo bags pretty quickly. People that don't pick up enrage me.

FancyFeline · 15/08/2025 15:38

Maybe we've been lucky with our dog but I have never noticed a particularly strong smell when he goes! The cat, however... 😱

TicklishMintDuck · 15/08/2025 15:33

You realise that you poo too, right?

scalt · 15/08/2025 15:31

I sometimes walk someone else's dog: somehow, it's more fun to look after someone else's dog than to have my own, and it's great being able to hand the dog back after the walk. I don't mind the picking up poo; I even pick up others left by neglectful dog owners: I see it as saving somebody from stepping in it. It's a bonus if I dispose of six bags after a walk. I have to clear my cat's poos as well, as he always does it in the same spot in the garden.

But what I can't stand about dogs is the fucking BARKING, which is why I will not get a dog myself.

My dog's bumhole is covered by her tail. Greyhounds don't tend to sit as they find it uncomfortable. When she is laying down, it is not touching anything.

It doesn’t bother me. I would far rather have a clean urban environment. I did cloth nappies with DC when they were babies and reusable period pants with them now. We live rurally between an organic farm and a ‘normal’ farm. Poo is part of life.

buswankerbabe · 15/08/2025 15:25

doodleschnoodle · 15/08/2025 13:08

Idk it’s just poo innit. I poo, my dog poos, the King poos. Obviously I don’t enjoy picking it up but it takes like 3 seconds and that’s it. I don’t enjoy wiping my own arse either.

This. No one likes poo (unless they are a special kind of weirdo). Cat poo is so much worse IMO.

It makes me ill when I see dog walkers carrying those little bags around, usually dangling from a limp wrist 😂🤢

Don't look then. At least they are being responsible. Dog owners can't win on here.

BotterMon · 15/08/2025 15:21

No problem for me. I have horses too; they do big poos but smell nice.

Have also done Manual Bowel Evacuation on humans with high level spinal cord injury - usually smell far worse than dogs as a human diet isn't as good.

Baby nappies are the worst - especially when it's gone up their backs and down their legs.

Fragmentedbrain · 15/08/2025 13:09

The bag can't protect you from the smell, though. Nor the seeping, squishy intestine derived warmth...

They should do, if dog poo bags which are usually scented, and tied up properly

Spidey66 · 15/08/2025 15:17

Oh ffs not another dog hating thread. :bangshead:

Yes it’s not my favourite task but I do it as a responsible dog owner. It’s surely no worse to changing a baby’s nappy, surely?

BeMintFatball · 15/08/2025 15:16

I have owned cats, Guinea pigs and now have my first dog. She produces 3 massive shits per day.

cats were the worse. So much so , it’s put me off owning a cat again.

Ddog with soon move out with DD1. Will probably be pet free for the first time in about 20 years. I would have a cat but for the poo and vomit

JackGrealishsBobbySocks · 15/08/2025 15:12

I was flying from Hong Kong to the UK once (12hr+ flight) and some revolting family were changing their bottlefed baby's nappy in the cabin. They were literally one row back from the toilets with an inbuilt change table. The pong lingered for hours.

The only time I have seen a flight attendant look visibly disgusted.

I'm part of a litter picking group. Every week we pick up dirty nappies that have been just left behind on the beach, in the street and in parks. The worst ones are where some kind person has changed a nappy in their car then dropped it into the gutter before driving off and squashing the contents under their wheel in the process.

On several occasions we have had to clear up after dirt bags who have sat on the sea wall and shat over it onto the beach. As a final flourish they've wiped their arse and dropped the paper over the wall to blow around where people swim and play.

Humans are gross.
After any big protest/march in city centres, the amount of human excrement left behind is insane.

IceMaidenIceBear · 15/08/2025 15:09

Oh god no @Bologneselove The scented bags make me heave. The scent just seems to be amplified by the warm poo.
Unscented bags only here.

I was once out with my friend for coffee - her friend joined us.
her toddler was potty training, and she whipped out a potty AT THE TABLE and allowed her child to use it right there.
i can’t remember if it was a wee or a poo, but she just walked through the cafe with this full potty to empty it in the toilet.
i was baffled by the whole thing!

Yep, why not take the child to the toilet?
I had similar a while back where a mum changed her baby's nappy on the seat next to me. Then she went to the loo (which does have changing facilities) to get rid of the nappy.

DiordreBarlow · 15/08/2025 15:07

PinkTonic · 15/08/2025 14:43

Actually picking up dog shit is nothing whatsoever like changing a nappy. Babies don’t shit on the ground and leave residue for people to pick up on their shoes. A child in a nappy you just lie down, undo the nappy, lift up the legs and fold the nappy over the poo. Place dirty nappy to one side and clean child. Plus it’s an actual human child. Not an animal. Dog shit smells far worse than baby shit. I couldn’t deal with any animal shit or vomit, have feeding bowls in my kitchen, or worse, litter trays, or have any animal sitting or lying on my furniture. Yuck.

One doesn't mind at all if it's one's own dog.

See op, it’s hard to understand if you are not a pet loving person.

It’s like my niece saying she won’t have kids because she can’t touch 💩 Because she is a teenager and not in the kid loving / maternal stage.

But when people have pets, they love them and poo does not seem like a deal breaker. Of course it’s not fun. But reward is higher than a momentarily inconvenience.

Except some dirty fuckers change nappies in cafes on the tables. I don't want to see or smell baby shit when I am tucking into my chocolate cake. And I know poonamis are a thing.

Cat shit is the worst though. I had cats and I always struggled with cleaning their litter tray, and picking up projectile diarrhoea from my elderly mog. Always made me heave.
