Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

Look at the quote history, yeah.

What does this mean please?

I'm very old, I struggle to understand modern language, yeah.

Probably one not made at home. Shop bought.

That's not luxe, you can buy that in Greggs.

DiordreBarlow · 16/08/2025 09:55

I'd love to know where all these fancily clad dog walkers are. Where I live people dress for the dog walk, not the catwalk. You're more likely to see 10 year old Mountain Warehouse than Dior's New Look.

Beginning to think that OP doesn't poo, she just quietly emits a teeny tiny rose scented lozenge into a Fabergé tureen decorated with glittery unicorns every three days.

Is that a question or a statement?

Poo cannot be illegal.

Look at the quote history, yeah.

Doesn't bother me, it's just part of dog ownership. I use a bag to contain it and bin appropriately.

In the same way scrubbing human shit off walls, floors and people was part of being a care worker. When you've had your pony tail, hands and even face grabbed by someone who has been smearing it everywhere, picking up a dog poo is pretty tame!

lifeisgoodrightnow · 16/08/2025 09:54

My dogs are on raw as I can’t stand squishy poo. Nice solid little pebbles that don’t smell. Perfect.

IceMaidenIceBear · 16/08/2025 09:50

Sorry, cross posted.

IceMaidenIceBear · 16/08/2025 09:49

If you're referring to not bagging your dogs waste, it should be pointed out that it would also be illegal not to clean up your own poo if you were caught short in the street. It's nothing to do with dog poo being more "disgusting".

DiordreBarlow · 16/08/2025 09:48

Fragmentedbrain · 16/08/2025 09:42

Er ... It's so disgusting as to be illegal in the context of dogs?

It's not the poo that's illegal.
In the case of dogs it's the failure to pick it up that is illegal.
Whereas, if you take a shit in the street OP, you're liable to be prosecuted.

It's just poo. It's a natural bodily function. I used to clean it off people and walls and furniture when I worked as a carer. I certainly don't mind picking up my dog's!

I find it so weird that people get hung up on a basic bodily function. Do you find sex and those fluids disgusting? No? Why poo then?

I loved my kids when they were babies and gladly (well, maybe not gladly, but I wasn't gagging) changed their nappies, mopped up their sick, blew their noses.

I have loved my dogs. In a different way, but they also need me to care for them, as my children did. So I clear up their poo, mop up their sick - at least I don't have to blow their noses. It's part of the deal. I love current dog, she loves me.

Mind you, she'd probably eat me if I died, and I hope my kids would stop short of that.

The bag can't protect you from the smell, though. Nor the seeping, squishy intestine derived warmth...

God, you’ve really thought about this to the point your posts bother me more than my dog’s poo.

Sharptonguedwoman · 16/08/2025 08:59

Worralorra · 15/08/2025 13:08

If you can’t handle (clearly with the protection of your poo bag) the poo, and dispose of it responsibly, you shouldn’t have a dog! It’s that simple…

It really is. Can't deal with the poo? Don't get a dog.

Picking up after my sibling's dog takes seconds, it's really not onerous. It's cat people that gross me out. Letting their animals out to shit with impunity in parks and other people's gardens, or keeping a tray of cat poo in their kitchen where flies can sit on it then settle on every other surface. Bleeeergh. I've also noticed that cat people will often let their cats sit and groom themselves in places where they would never in a million years place a pair of shoes, for example.
I get that you can't stop cats from doing this stuff and I would never be cruel to an animal, so my solution would be "don't keep cats". I should add though, that IMO irresponsible dog owners who don't pick up, or don't control their dogs should be heavily fined, they are awful people.

SunflowerLife · 16/08/2025 08:52

I've got a small dog so it does small poos. I use thicker bags that contain it properly without it coming into contact with my skin and I take hand gel on dog walks. You get used to doing it too.

CaramelGhost · 16/08/2025 08:51

It does....but you gotta do what you gotta do

I was just about to say I'd much rather pick up a poo than change a nappy.

Also, feeding the dog a decent diet generally means well formed poo that isn't especially smelly, so it is not a big chore.

Don't get me wrong though, it isn't my favourite part of dog ownership.

this

Decent high protein food, don’t over feed and don’t over treat, especially with human UPF food then poos, even for my Labrador were small-ish, well formed, firm, and didn’t smell much from arms length and were no problem.

If he had an upset stomach (usually dead things, sheep poo, food litter when out 🤮) it was throughly unpleasant.

Katemax82 · 16/08/2025 08:49

As an 8 year old I got bullied by my sister to clean the dog poo that the 2 puppy's my mum and her boyfriend at the time got. They were really boisterous labrador/doberman crosses and my mum made us walk them. They dragged us down the street as they were too strong, and my sister made me clean their shite. They trashed our house and I got septicemia from one of them scratching me. Needless to say they were rehomed

The only thing I don’t like is if you’re off on a long walk and they poo in the first 15minutes and there’s no bin for the next 90….
Carrying it around is not so fun. Especially on a warm day.

I can see this thread has stretched to 10 pages (and maybe turned into a bun fight by now?!) which I've not read, but in case it's not been mentioned I bought this for storing dog poo - bagged obviously - when on a long walk. It's great, although it does stink when you open it at the end to put the poo bag in the bin.

I’m just going to leave it where it is. Would hate to offend anyone by picking it up.
