Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

As someone upthread said earlier , if you feed your dog a good quality diet it really reduces any smell and the poos are fine .

OtherS · 15/08/2025 14:05

I usually find things dogs do a lot less disgusting than I would if a human did them, not sure why. Don't really want to watch humans gnawing on bones, lying on their backs with their legs spread or drooling everywhere. When dogs do it, I smile indulgently. Once had a retriever who liked to roll in slurry. Also a spaniel who would specifically look for my knees to wipe his mouth on, happily avoiding all other knees as he dribbled his way determinedly to mine. I don't think I would have kept them around long if they'd been human, as it is I just rolled my eyes.

I love how people who have presumably had babies and quite literally wiped poo from their arses (and worse) cannot fathom sticking your hand in a plastic bag, collecting a shite, tying a knot in the bag and disposing of it appropriately.

Shit is shit. You deal with it whether its a baby, a dog, or somebody who's sick and/or infirm.
Human shite isnt magically cleaner than any other species so if you can deal with one of them you can deal with all of them.

Louiestopit · 15/08/2025 14:04

It’s like baby shit for me.

You couldn’t pay me enough to change another baby’s nappy. I never have done, I never will do. My own babies? I’ve been projectile shat on and didn’t blink an eye.

My dog is the same. She’s mine, I’ll pick up her poo. I wouldn’t go near another dogs.

BridgetRandomfuck · 15/08/2025 13:48

When I first got a dog I found picking up the poo absolutely stomach-churning, I couldn’t bear it and invested in all sorts of (rubbish) pooper scooper devices. But I suppose you get used to everything and 15 years on I bend down and pick it up without a qualm.

Same. I used take rubber gloves out with me to pick up poo. I ditched them in the end, but would still pick up loads of grass and leaves along with the poo. Now, I just pick it up without a second thought.

Poodlelove · 15/08/2025 14:01

It's like changing your child's nappy.
It's gross to change someone else's child's nappy but you have to do your own child's.
I love my dogs so much that it doesn't bother me any more , it used to when I first got a dog but that was 20 years ago.

YeOldeGreyhound · 15/08/2025 13:59

The dog haters of MN - why are you so fixated on dog poo?

Picking up poo is part of having a dog. Same as changing your own kid's nappy. You just get on with it.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 15/08/2025 13:59

doodleschnoodle · 15/08/2025 13:08

Idk it’s just poo innit. I poo, my dog poos, the King poos. Obviously I don’t enjoy picking it up but it takes like 3 seconds and that’s it. I don’t enjoy wiping my own arse either.

😂

afaloren · 15/08/2025 13:58

I don’t mind it, for some reason. Always pick it up. I wouldn’t like to change a nappy though! I have double standards really, my neighbour leaves full nappy bags outside the front door throughout the day and then puts them all in the bin at night which I think is gross but then I’m fine with carrying a poo bauble for miles 😂

FranticFrankie · 15/08/2025 13:56

I accept that it's part of being a dog owner. Extra strong bags are important. Cold weather poos are easiest (hard and frozen)
What really bugs me is the piles of poo left on the verges, in the woods, on pavements. How on earth can people just leave it?
My dog stepped in a pile of poor recently and it's insult to injury to have to clean another dog's poo from your own dog's paws 😡

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 15/08/2025 13:55

No thanks this is why I don’t have a dog but also because I couldn’t give one the life it deserves

I have never minded changing nappies as they’re human babies and it’s human poop

im also a nurse and deal with poo all day so don’t really want to deal with any other poo thanks and no I have no issue wiping my own human bum or any other humans bum

NameChangedForThis2025 · 15/08/2025 13:51

I don’t own a dog but occasionally look after my sisters. I’m very glad she doesn’t have a big dog, small poo I can handle!

Any dog owner that doesn’t have a Dicky Bag should google and buy one right now. It’s a neoprene zip up pouch which you can attach to your belt or strap around your waist, you pop the dog poo bag in it and it’s MUCH more pleasant than carting about poo in a plastic bag. (Contains the smell for one thing).

activelyprogressing · 15/08/2025 13:51

I would heave at the thought of picking up someone else’s dog’s poo but for some reason, picking up my own dog’s poo doesn’t really bother me.

I mean no one likes a mushy one (🤢) but it doesn’t really bother me. It’s part of being a dog owner and if you hate it that much, you shouldn’t get a dog.

PurpleChrayn · 15/08/2025 13:50

I have no idea.

Dogs are filthy. Their arses are always concealing some dreadful winnet of shite.

stayathomer · 15/08/2025 13:49

My dog does pops that are a decent consistency (how am I having this conversation 😅)- so literally bag down and I can just pick them up! I didn’t find baby’s nappies that tough but maybe it’s because in the past I worked with horses and dealt with cow dung too!!!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 15/08/2025 13:48

ChungkingDreamer · 15/08/2025 13:15

I don't know, it just doesn't bother me. My dog is fed well, so her poos aren't particularly smelly or anything, and picking it up 1-2 times a day is no big deal when compared to the benefits of having my dog around so...

This.

What was pretty gross was the smell emanating from the fucking huge cat shit left on my front garden this am. Which I have no choice but to pick up. I know exactly whose fucking cat has done it and as they live across the road and can see my front lawn I’m also pretty sure they know their cat is doing it too. But I guess it’s a cat owners perk that it’s ok to not clean it up

BridgetRandomfuck · 15/08/2025 13:48

And then swing the bag jauntily around as they walk. I don’t want someone’s dog’s poo anywhere NEAR me.

And why do they allow dogs to poo on the pavement as there’s always “residue”. Drag it to the kerb/a tree and pick it up from there.

God I know. I can't stand walking behind someone doing this.

Rosesandteashops · 15/08/2025 13:47

I can't say it's a pleasure but you do it because you have to. What does make me barf though is picking up other dogs' poo. There's a patch of grass outside my house that is often decorated with brown lumps and I feel I near to clear it up before I tread in it or drive over it. That does make me gag.

TitaniasAss · 15/08/2025 13:46

My massive dogs shites are bigger than my head, but it's just part and parcel of being a responsible dog owner. I can't say I love it, but I love him.

Dearg · 15/08/2025 13:45

It’s definitely different when it’s your own dog, a dog that you love.

Personally, I hate picking up cold poo, other dogs poo, or poo which has flies on it 🤢, but having had two labs with very efficient & regular digestive systems, I have learned which bags work best, where the nearest bins are, and in general when the dog is likely to need both.

I share your disgust at owners who don’t pick up.

whiteroseredrose · 15/08/2025 13:45

Gnarab24 · 15/08/2025 13:10

Funnily enough I find picking up cold poo (when I’m picking up the garden pops) more stomach churning than a ‘just laid’ poo.

Me too!

in answer to the original question, it’s a bit like changing nappies. Fine when it’s your own baby (or dog). Not so much when it is someone else’s.

saywhatdidhesay · 15/08/2025 13:44

It gets picked up. I don’t think my dogs poo is any less disgusting but accept as part of having a dog that I pick it up.

TreeDudette · 15/08/2025 13:43

Dog poo is not really any worse than human poo. I wipe my own on the daily and wiped my kids for years. We luckily live in an area with quite a few bins so I don't normally have to carry the bag far.

bugalugs45 · 15/08/2025 13:43

I’ve got a big dog who’s raw fed so tiny poos, not the best part of my day but as others have said , it’s same as changing a child’s nappy , it’s not great but it’s got to be done ! He eats therefore he 💩, same as us !
