2 weeks ago money went missing from my bank account found out it was done in branch so a face to face transaction and it was a cheque. I reported it to the fraud department and got my money back.
Now 2 weeks later its happened again they say it was once again a counter transaction at the bank a teller transaction they called but I haven't recieved full details of which branch and if its a cheque again.
I haven't had a cheque book in my possession for years and haven't written one either it's a long shot but does anybody have any insight on what could be going on here maybe a bank worker.

What bank?
surely they have CCTV?

healthybychristmas · 15/08/2025 07:05

Also, has someone ordered a cheque-book in your name? Can you ask them that?

healthybychristmas · 15/08/2025 07:05

If somebody has done this in a branch then why can't they look at the CCTV footage to see who it is and to see if you recognise them?

May not have been a cheque. Do they still have withdrawal slips in banks ?

This also. However, I think all transactions like this now require at the minimum a debit card and will certainly involve having to put a pin into the keypad/card machine (if a card is being used).

BridgeNewton · 15/08/2025 07:01

If the transactions were made in branch then there will be CCTV.

The most obvious question was did it involve the same bank teller on both occassions?

I'd move my account to another provider. The fraud team are obviously a bit hopeless if they didn't stop that cheque book the first time, or put a note on the account re extra checks required. Was it a cheque cashed at a counter? Surely they must have had id or a bank card too? Gone are the days when you'd write a cheque and cash it at a counter with no ID.
Looking at the reviews below First Direct and Nationwide are recommended by both.

It's a very simple IT task to generate a cheque book. No one would necessarily have checked the request. HOWEVER, the generated cheque book should only have gone to your home address, or to the branch itself.

I agree with others. Empty that account and open a new one.

I had this with a debit card years ago and to prevent it affecting my own access to money/pay bills etc, I had to do this.

We have a business and there is one item I pay the DVLA for each year where they will only accept a cheque.

We still use cheques at work for a few specific things. We had a spate of fraudulent cheques last year. I think that they were printed using the account details and were a few cheques numbers down. I assume someone got the bank details and gave it a go. I can't remember if the bank spotted and refused to cash, or if they just reimbursed us after the fact.

Do you think a cheque can be generated from my account if they get my account details

Charltonstrek · 15/08/2025 06:11

They just stated first time it happened it was a cheque so I presume somebody wrote it

@Mayflower282 snap!

cyvguhb · 15/08/2025 05:58

Which bank is it, are they saying that someone wrote out a cheque to cash and was handed money over the counter.?

Is that even a thing now? And if it is don't they ask for some kind of ID.

Seems harsh to freeze your account when you're the victim

LemograssLollipop · 15/08/2025 05:58

I'd vote with your feet ... Close the account and move to a different bank.

Mayflower282 · 15/08/2025 05:57

I would be closing the account and using a different bank.

Charltonstrek · 15/08/2025 05:55

Does anybody know how somebody would have a cheque for my account when I myself haven't had a cheque book for around 15 years

They should cancel all chequebooks and block your account to cheques.

Unbelievable that they haven't.

Yes they have now but but delayed

Why didn't they have you close the account and open a new one with a different account number.

Yes I think they should have done this the 1st time.
I did ask and was told I can't change account number only open new account

Who’s going to be the first to say they need to cancel the cheque (book)?

How on earth have they used a cheque I don't have a cheque book.
