to think supermarkets should open longer on Sundays?

By late Sunday morning my local supermarket is like a rugby scrum with trolleys. The car park is jammed, people are queueing before they even get inside, and once you are in the aisles it feels like an obstacle course just to reach the milk. It is easily the busiest day of the week here, yet we still have the six hour Sunday trading limit.

Because of Sunday trading laws, the big shops in England and Wales can only open for six hours. In practice that means everyone piles in at the same time. Late morning is rammed, early afternoon is even worse, and by the afternoon the place looks like a plague of locusts has been through, with only artichokes and beetroot left.

In Scotland there are no Sunday trading laws for large shops, so they can open as long as they like, and life seems to carry on perfectly fine.

If supermarkets here could open longer, like on a normal day, people could spread out their shopping and the whole thing would be calmer. Families who spend Saturday at kids sports or activities, and workers who do shifts at the weekend, would have more choice than the current six hour window. Smaller express or local stores are open all day anyway, but they are pricier and do not stock everything, so you end up doing several little shops.

I know the main argument for the current rules is that Sundays should be for people to spend time with their families. But not everyone lives in a family setup, and many people, especially students, part timers, and those looking for extra income, actually prefer to work on Sundays. For some, it is the best day to pick up extra hours without clashing with other commitments.

I just do not see how the current system helps when Sundays are already the busiest.

Yanbu, only because I'm from Ireland (where supermarkets have pretty much normal opening hours on a Sunday) but have lived in England for 15 years and DH still can't get his head around the fact that they close at 4pm here. I have to remind him at least twice a month. It drives me mad.

When I moved to Finland shops (apart from little corner shops) were shut on Sundays, and shut at 6pm on Saturdays. It wasn't magical and sleepy, it was just really annoying. And shut for all public holidays too, fine for Easter and Christmas but Ascension Day always took me by surprise and I'd usually really need something and be unable to get it.

When I lived in France I adapted very quickly (as it’s not actually that hard to live one day not buying anything when you know it’s going to happen every week).

I’ll concede that the Wednesday afternoon closures often caught my by surprise and were annoying though.

I’d like them to open earlier and close earlier , say 9am to 2pm

I would find it useful if they opened earlier.

Is there a lack of supermarkets where you live OP? I have never experienced anything like you describe.

I actually think they should close entirely on Sundays. There’s something sort of magical and sleepy on a Sunday in France when everything is closed (but really frustrating when it’s a Wednesday afternoon) and I think it does impact pace of life in a positive way.

Sunday trading laws are bullshit. Night shift will still be stocking shelves, delivery drivers transporting packaging and many in other industries like hospitality and emergency services working like normal.

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/08/2025 19:02

I agree but we’re well ahead of lots of European countries where all shops are closed completely on Sundays

SwanFlight · 13/08/2025 18:59

All or nothing. There should be no driving on Sunday, apart from essential workers, and granny lifts.

I like to see DD when she gets home for sunday lunch!

There’s more to life than work.

Who is forcing you to work? Supermarket jobs are voluntary.

ExitPursuedByABare · 13/08/2025 18:57

They could close all day Sunday for me. How lovely to have a day with no shops open. Cannot understand why folk can’t manage their shopping within all the other hours that shops are open.

Iloveeverycat · 13/08/2025 18:54

I think they shouldnt open on a Sunday at all. That's ridiculous.

LlynTegid · 13/08/2025 18:52

Absolutely not. Let's have a day which is different. I bet most of the people who want longer shopping hours on a Sunday never work one themselves.

I'd prefer midday to 6pm, which would be more likely if it was not dark at 5pm or earlier for five months a year.

None of the supermarkets in my area are as you describe, OP. We do have a couple that open 11-5.

I'd agree with the "letting workers spent time with their families" argument if every non essential service was shut. Zoos, gyms, leisure centres, restaurants, call centres...

When I worked in retail early Sunday closing meant we all had a chance to have a thorough clean/tidy/restock
get all areas ready for week ahead
catch up on staff training
have any all staff meetings
litter pick the car park

all without customers in the way….bliss!

And this is why I shop at 7am opening on the Monday Grin every shelf stocked. I am aware not everyone can do this.

taxidriver · 13/08/2025 18:19

sundays are so busy in my local tesco, probably because of the shorter hours,
i presume sunday pay is more than saturday pay
they also open earlier than 10 for browsing

leave them as they are
when i was 20 they wouldnt sell alcohol at certain times, barricaded the wine

IMissSparkling · 13/08/2025 18:17

I live in Scotland and often go to the supermarket on a Sunday evening. I find it so bizarre that England, with a bigger population, still has these antiquated Sunday trading laws.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/08/2025 18:13

I dont think this but I do think that they should all go back to being open 24 hours, particularly in cities

I loved going on a midnight trip to the big tesco extra 🥺

DeoHelp · 13/08/2025 18:12

Meadowfinch · 13/08/2025 18:10

Why?

Our Tesco is open from 6am until midnight on Saturdays. I've normally done the week's shop before Parkrun on Saturday, if I don't do it all on Friday evening.

It's open every evening during the week as well. We're hardly limited in choice already.

Sunday seems fairly quiet.

I need fresh groceries for the week so Sunday is the ideal day to do this - unfortunately I then have to basically dedicate half of my day to going to Sainsbury’s as the opening hours are so short and it’s so busy. Don’t have time on Monday due to work and I’m often too exhausted afterwards to do the big shop.

Drivingthevengabus · 13/08/2025 18:12

It's an antiquated law, IMO. We no longer live in a world where everyone works 9-5 and Sundays are a sacred day for religion and family. People live and work more flexibly on the whole and I think opening hours should reflect that.
