Was IBU for walking out of shop at checkout?

I'm not naming the shop, but this morning, I went into a big high street retailer to collect a click and collect order and whilst I was there, I had a look around and picked up a few more things.

Went to till, total came to over £150, all fine, sales assistant asked if they could have my email address for the receipt. I said, no thanks, a paper receipt is fine thanks, she said, sorry we don't do paper receipts, we need to have your email address to provide that. I looked at her and said I had never come across any other retailer doing that, but she stood her ground and said in an assertive tone, I need your email address. Again I refused and said, if that's the case, I'll just leave it and walked away. Last time I gave a retailer my email in store, I was bombarded with daily emails, despite unsubscribing via the link at every email received.

WIBU to have walked away as I didn't want to hand over my personal data? Driving home, I did think about creating a separate email account for this reason, but then again, why should I? surely my preferences should be respected.

So did you leave the shop empty handed? Seems a little bit like cutting your nose off to spite your face 🤷‍♀️

No one is saying they cant ask a customer for their email if their manager has asked them too, but they shouldn’t be standing there out right lying to people, saying they can’t provide a paper receipt when they know full well they can. That is on the shop assistant and they can absolutely control that behaviour.

And why would a shop assistant do that? What do they gain? They have been told to insist. Do you really think shop assistants making not much more than minimum wage stand around thinking of ways to annoy customers?

JackJarvisEsq · 12/08/2025 20:13

I have an email that’s just receiptsjjarvis@bla which totally threw the cashier in new look (she couldn’t spell receipts) so she just churned out a paper one

Well that's not a reason.

My mother is 86 and has 3 different email addresses.

You didn't ask for a reason. You asked who hadn't got an email address. Of the people I know who don't have an email address, they are all in their 80s. I wasn't suggesting EVERYONE in their 80s doesn't have an email address.

BusWankers · 12/08/2025 19:42

B1anche · 12/08/2025 19:35

I have several clients in their 80s who don't.

My best friend and her husband don’t have email addresses. I’ve come across other people who don’t as well.

Really? How do they do any work? Are they not employed?
Do they never book anything online ever?

If it was click and collect, wouldn’t they have your email address in their system anyway?

You're only the 57th person to mention this. And OP has explained.

How would they know what item was bought though?

Where I used to work they could use the date of the purchase on the statement (or input a few days before incase it took a few days to show up on) and then insert the card details and the entire transaction would come up. I’m not sure how it worked with cash as I never did one, but it was easy enough to do.

Stigsmother · 12/08/2025 18:48

Think I might create a new email address- [email protected].
Makes a point whilst being suitably passive aggressive I think 🤔

WomanOfSteel · 12/08/2025 18:30

ImGonnaKeepOnDancing · 12/08/2025 15:50

Surely if you did a click and collect they already have your email address because they use that to confirm collection time? Surely giving the address for your receipt wouldn’t be that big of a deal and result is many more emails that you would’ve got (do to click and collect)

That aside though I prefer email receipts because they’re not going to let misplaced or thrown away, they are always there if I need to return an item and it’s not wasting paper that can’t be recycled.

I hate email receipts as I end up deleting them with all the other spam ones. I don’t mind them asking if I would like paper or email but I hate the insistence of it. It’s my contact details and I don’t want to give them out. Similar to how we moved our landline onto ex-directory when I was a teenager and some lads at school got the number and used to ring us at all hours of the night harassing us. Why should shops be allowed to do it now and it be accepted because it’s just an email address.

I work at dunelm and we definitely do not accept bank statements as proof of purchase

Well it seems like Dunelm have some issues regarding the law then, because I know for a fact you can look up transaction history and therefore can find the transaction in question. Dunelms policy doesn’t override the law, I would imagine your manager is bullshitting you somewhere along the line and if a customer went to head office about it, they would absolutely be able to pull up that information.

Literally saw a thing from Martin Lewis today about New Look and Monsoon having incorrect distance selling regulations on their website. Doesn’t matter what it says on the website, the law is the law.

SweetHydrangea · 12/08/2025 18:18

pinenuts75 · 12/08/2025 18:15

I do believe some dunelm stores are phasing out paper receipts, they might be one of them

Dunelm aren’t phasing out paper receipts and I have that in writing from their head office. They wouldn’t be able to ever do that because there are some customers who genuinely don’t have a email address to receive a receipt. Their preferred method is email however they have said they will always provide a paper receipt for customers who need or request one.

pinenuts75 · 12/08/2025 18:18

SweetHydrangea · 12/08/2025 18:08

It is against the law. Look it up on the government website. And every large store in existence keeps transaction data so if you give the date and amount plus your last 4 digits of the card you paid with (all on the bank statement), they can find the transaction.

if you work in a small shop you might not have that system, but a bank statement is still proof of purchase, your employer/you if your shop can’t override the law regardless of what you might think.

I work at dunelm and we definitely do not accept bank statements as proof of purchase

Do you have a job ? If your manager TOLD you you HAVE to do something what would you do ?
Maybe you are a manager. What would you do if you TOLD an employee they HAD to do something and they refused.
Do you really think shop assistants have anything to do with any decisions a company makes ? Really?

any targets or KPIs that rely on someone else doing something they may or may not want to do are rubbish KPIs and that is a management issue, not a staff issue.

I will not give anyone my email address unless i want to. So i use my supermarket loyalty card connected to my bank to pay and get the receipt in the app. That is my choice.

How long does the email take to come? If i'm in, say Bluewater, and i go from shop to shop, how am i going to prove i bought something if the rushed cashier entered my email incorrectly? So. Again. I really don't care about your arbitrary targets and KPIs, but i do feel bad for the staff and i am never rude to them. Just firm that i want a paper receipt.

It's infuriating. Another example of overcomplicating something so simple for the shop's benefit rather than mine.

My main concern is this scenario:

I go shopping in, for example, Dunelm and they will only give me an email receipt. I then go into The Range next door (which sells the same crap) and get accused of shoplifting the item I bought in Dunelm. Then because the email server / my phone is having a wobble I can't prove my innocence.

Generally you don't need to prove your innocence.

They have to prove your guilt.

Really this should be repeated every year at school from 4 to 18 years old.

I won't give my email address either but haven't experienced a store then refusing to sell me the items.

Can you not just give a fake email address?

How would they know what item was bought though?

By searching their transaction data…how do you think they know which products sell and which don’t. They transaction records for years that they can search through.
