to think my colleague should just admit she is on weight loss injections?

At work we have all noticed Sally has lost a lot of weight in the past few months. She is always talking about diets and what she eats and does not eat anymore and makes a big deal about avoiding the biscuit tin in the kitchen. She keeps saying it is just willpower and cutting out snacks.

Last week I walked past her desk, her bag was open, and there was one of those weight loss injection pens in plain sight.

Now I cannot unsee it and every time she goes on about her self control it feels performative.

I am not saying she has to announce it to the whole office, but when she is preaching about anyone can do it if they just try it feels a bit dishonest.

AIBU to think she should either be upfront or just stop making a song and dance about how she has done it all naturally?

@betnet Have you said anything directly to her?
I often find I feel much less pissed off with people when I address things directly, though I know it’s sometimes hard to do! When I’m pissed off but don’t address it, I can become quite fixated on things and rageful about them!!
I don’t know, maybe if she says, “oooh having another snack are you…?” I might say, “yes, and I would prefer if you didn’t comment every time I do as it takes the fun out of it!” Or something like that - clear, but not rude.

CallMeEvelyn · 11/08/2025 20:55

And definitely don't bring this up, would you be discussing somebody taking anti-diarrhoea or indigestion tablets? No. Then don't discuss any other meds, it's not hard.

Crunchymum · 11/08/2025 17:36

Sure thing.

People bring their (expensive and more often than not refrigerated) weightloss pens to work and also happen to leave it in plain sight of the OP.

Absolutely did not happen.

Exactly isn’t it a weekly thing? You’d not carry it round for a once a week jab.

CallMeEvelyn · 11/08/2025 20:53

This doesn't add up. Diabetes injections have to be kept in cool temperature, weight loss pens I assume too. She wouldn't have kept one in her handbag.

Secondly, why would you assume she has no self control and doesn't diet? That's exactly what she's doing by the sounds of it, medication suppresses the food noise most likely which many non-obese or overweight people don't understand because they don't experience it, and she eats a controlled diet. It's a level playing field and you seem very judgemental and ignorant.

MJ isn't the miracle drug that some people seem to think.
For the first few days of taking it, you get appetite suppression but this wears off before the next dose. You might feel like eating but you can't eat much, so you have to be careful what you do eat. You also have to exercise otherwise you won't get great results. There also might be side affects, some are quite mild, some not. It really does vary from person to person. The biggest results appear to be seen from those needing to lose the most weight.
It's not an easy option. There's willpower, reduced eating, exercise - all things you'd do normally - but with a boost. Some people need that boost.

How do you know she hasn't been diagnosed with diabetes or something else and been prescribed something? There's no reason to carry around a MJ pen.

She doesn't have diabetes. She is very open about her health issues.

I would tred very carefully here. 1. It's medical information and is protected under GDPR and is "protected data", colleague or not & insufferable or not it still does not give you the right to it.2. Why do you feel the need to 'look ' in someone's bag ...open or not could leave u open to all sorts of accusations in future e.g. if something goes missing you'll be first to blame ...3. It's none of your business , mind your own , she doesn't owe you a thing 4. If the behaviour bothers you communicate , change the subject, suddenly become "too busy to chat" or just be honest and say "can we please change the subject?"

She doesn't have to be open. If she didn't keep going on about it weight and diet, nobody would have thought anything, But she could at least stop telling everyone else to stop snacking while she snacks herself.

Then the issue is not the WLI which you seem to think is some kind of cheat (which is ignorant and untrue) but that she is commenting on what you eat. Just ask her to stop. I think you would be annoyed by her whatever she does. But focus on what is impacting you - her comments - and mind your own business about the rest.

Apart from the fact she hasn't brought a Mounjaro pen to work to keep on her bag all day - it's none of your business. Leave her alone. She is clearly doing the work.

And being absolutely insufferable about it.

OwlBeThere · 11/08/2025 20:51

I carry 2 pens with me one is an epi-pen as I’m anaphylactic to strawberries and tree nuts.
i also have my migraine relief medication on me usually.
so it could be either of those.

ruethewhirl · 11/08/2025 20:51

Why on earth would anyone think they were owed an explanation of how another person has lost weight?? YABU, OP. So much craziness around WLI at the moment.

BrendaSmall · 11/08/2025 20:49

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 11/08/2025 18:33

Ah maybe it’s in her bag as she doesn’t want anyone at home to find it? Partner/kids/whoever she lives with

Possibly
I know that no one else will go in my cabinet, as it’s only myself & husband who lives at home

Sunshineismyfavourite · 11/08/2025 20:47

Totally agree with a pp who said that weight loss injections still require self control. I'm not on them but a friend of mine is and she is still as obsessed with food as she ever was and has hardly lost any weight - it's so sad. She will say she feels sick the day after an injection so will only eat half a sausage roll rather than a whole one. Sometimes there is way more to weight problems - injections are absolutely not a magic wand.

Reformed their characters 😂 Not changed their eating habits but reformed their fucking characters.

Exactly my point. Sally isn't saying, "I've changed my eating habits," she's talking about how much self control she now has and telling other people how easy it is to do the same. Sally is the one treating fat as a character flaw.

GiddyDog · 11/08/2025 20:43

I've lost 5 stone in the past 18 months, not using WLI but I'm sure there are people who suspect I have and would love to get it out of me.
I don't really talk about my diet/exercise regimen because it's boring but I've had a few people really pry and obviously be unsatisfied with my calorie deficit and gym answer. It sounds like she's overcompensating because she's aware/believes she'll be judged for being on WLI.
Equally, if she's policing your food and commenting on what you eat you'd be perfectly justified in telling her to stop.

FiveBarGate · 11/08/2025 20:42

I agree with you @betnet .

It's not the WLI. Three of my colleagues are on them and I think brilliant, good for them. I'm not in any way jealous and it's the decision I'd make in their position.

But if they started lecturing me about willpower it would give me the rage.

Given these people have all tried all sorts of diets and struggled in the past, it would be shitty of them to say 'you just need to try harder'.

When people say that on these boards they get a pile on because we all know weight loss is more complex.

This has nothing to do with her being on them and everything to do with double standards. The colleague owes it to no one to reveal she is on them but equally shouldn't be loudly pretending she isn't or commenting on other people's eating habits.

That never goes down well in other circumstances or if the situations were reversed so not sure why OP is getting such a hard time..

Fetaface · 11/08/2025 20:41

Weight loss pens still need self control and a diet. You lack understanding.

What do you hope to gain from her being forced to announce something? Imagine if this was a pregnancy and you were saying someone must announce it or a relationship or being gay.

People have a right to privacy. Your desire to gossip doesn't trump that.

SilenceInside · 11/08/2025 20:40

Then tell her you don’t want her to comment on what you eat, and warn her what will happen if she continues. That’s all you need to do. The focus on WLI is a distraction and a useful tool to beat Sally with instead of directly addressing the issue. Which isn’t WLI, but your colleague’s behaviour.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 11/08/2025 20:38

Its none of your business and the judgment people face when losing weight- however they do it - is why people are often not open. And she still has to use willpower - the jabs dont melt the fat off.

If she talks about dieting, ignore her.
If she talks about exercise, ignore her.
If she comments on what you’re eating, ignore her.

Her possible use of weight loss injections is a red herring. She’s a crashing bore either way. Set yourself free.

FurForksSake · 11/08/2025 20:37

WLI are the current c-section / epidural to beat women with. Taking a medication that can make you feel pretty lousy, costs money and has to be prescribed following what can be humiliating photos and video interviews is just a stick to beat women. Losing weight is hard. No one needs to be a dick about it.

betnet · 11/08/2025 20:37

Miniatureschnauzers · 11/08/2025 20:35

@betnet I don’t expect you to answer this, but what is your relationship with your body like? It sounds like maybe you have a sore spot which this is tapping into. For example, my relationship with my size/shape is okay, so I think her comments about me having snacks would not bother me or get under my skin.
BUT I am more self-conscious about my ageing skin and wrinkles and have not yet quite got used to them. So if someone was telling me to drink more water and use said cream for my wrinkles (when in fact they were having regular Botox) that would get under my skin and I’d probably focus on her and feel envy and dislike much more! What I mean is, look inwards and see why this has pissed you off so much, it might help. Then maybe figure out a way to respond more upfront to her comments about you snacking…. I’m not sure how I would respond… “everything in moderation they say!” and make light of it - or…”ooooh you seem very interested in my snacking habits!” if you’re being a bit more upfront. Other people may have kinder/more helpful retorts.

i do wonder whether she is missing her snacks which is why she is so focused on what everyone else is eating! And maybe wants everyone else to avoid snacks so that she is not tempted!

But try not to vilify her as that makes you into the more bitter and unpleasant person in the scenario.

I am fine with my body. I just don't like being told I can't have a snack if I want one. I am not 5.

She then has snacks herself. It has pissed me off because of the hypocrisy.

She is not missing her snacks as she has snacks everyday.
