to think my colleague should just admit she is on weight loss injections?

At work we have all noticed Sally has lost a lot of weight in the past few months. She is always talking about diets and what she eats and does not eat anymore and makes a big deal about avoiding the biscuit tin in the kitchen. She keeps saying it is just willpower and cutting out snacks.

Last week I walked past her desk, her bag was open, and there was one of those weight loss injection pens in plain sight.

Now I cannot unsee it and every time she goes on about her self control it feels performative.

I am not saying she has to announce it to the whole office, but when she is preaching about anyone can do it if they just try it feels a bit dishonest.

AIBU to think she should either be upfront or just stop making a song and dance about how she has done it all naturally?

Really? Most people keep their injections at home in the fridge.

You really need to butt out. It is none of your business. If you keep harassing her you are going to into trouble with HR.

Not in the world of AI

I'm on a diet and I've lost loads, a stone in the first week. Mostly water bla bla, lost 2 stone by the end of the first month. Everyone is convinced I'm on the injections but I'm not

It's the 'nobody asked but I'm going to announce and lie about how I'm doing it' that would annoy me.

Because that's what she's doing: she's lying, and vicariously insulting anyone else who has merely tried to 'eat healthy and cut out biscuits at work' and seen no results.

I'd quietly tell her you saw the injection jab on her desk and to stop going on about it.

mamabearlove · 11/08/2025 20:35

HNRTFT but I am amazed that you could see what the pen had written on it…were you prying? It’s absolutely not your business !

This and
"we have all noticed Sally has lost a lot of weight"

You are all making her feel like she has to explain it.

Are you prepared to divulge your personal medical details to her and to the rest of the office?

How do you know that is how we are all making her feel? Are you one of my colleagues?

Is it wrong to notice when someone loses or gains weight?

Plenty of people have already answered the fridge issue.

She might be hiding it from her family at home. She has mentioned they give her a hard time about her weight.

@betnet I don’t expect you to answer this, but what is your relationship with your body like? It sounds like maybe you have a sore spot which this is tapping into. For example, my relationship with my size/shape is okay, so I think her comments about me having snacks would not bother me or get under my skin.
BUT I am more self-conscious about my ageing skin and wrinkles and have not yet quite got used to them. So if someone was telling me to drink more water and use said cream for my wrinkles (when in fact they were having regular Botox) that would get under my skin and I’d probably focus on her and feel envy and dislike much more! What I mean is, look inwards and see why this has pissed you off so much, it might help. Then maybe figure out a way to respond more upfront to her comments about you snacking…. I’m not sure how I would respond… “everything in moderation they say!” and make light of it - or…”ooooh you seem very interested in my snacking habits!” if you’re being a bit more upfront. Other people may have kinder/more helpful retorts.

i do wonder whether she is missing her snacks which is why she is so focused on what everyone else is eating! And maybe wants everyone else to avoid snacks so that she is not tempted!

But try not to vilify her as that makes you into the more bitter and unpleasant person in the scenario.

csigeek · 11/08/2025 20:33

Because weight loss injections are not a magic solution and don’t “melt fat” like a lot of people seem to assume. You do still need to put a lot of work in to ensure you lose weight and can maintain the loss when you stop taking it. It’s none of your business.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 11/08/2025 20:32

Is she light enough yet for you to hoist her up on the cross?

Seriously @betnet you sound a little deranged about this. None of are Sally so we can’t answer the questions you are banging on about. Let it go, you will never know.

In fairness you do get to say something to her for commenting on what you eat so take that small win and get past it.

Sgreenpy · 11/08/2025 20:28

None of your business.

MYBO · 11/08/2025 20:20

MYOB.

( Which is what my user name was meant to be when I NC this morning but was so annoyed I didn’t notice I’d got the letters the wrong way round. 🤦‍♀️ )

SilenceInside · 11/08/2025 20:14

It’s not about the method of weight loss, it’s about the fact she keeps going on about it when it’s not welcome. So that’s what you tell her, that you aren’t interested in her thoughts on your snacks or food, and if she keeps commenting you’ll have to consider it a form of workplace bullying/harassment and take it further.

Then, ignore any general comments she makes about dieting, and don’t engage. That’s all.

WalterMittysPuppet · 11/08/2025 20:12

Your issue is that she's a diet bore and vocally berates others for making less "healthy" choices than her. Yeah, that's annoying. But whether she is using WLIs or not is irrelevant, because as others have said, it doesn't melt fat - it suppresses appetite so it's just a little easier to avoid the calorific foods us fat people love, and stop thinking about food every hour of every day. Just like nicotine patches help smokers through the worst of their early nicotine cravings. Etc etc etc.

Personally I'm rather scared of the WLIs (fear of side effects), so I am losing weight by routine calorie counting for the 150th time in my life. I seem to be in a good zone at the moment - I wouldn't dream of commenting on someone else's snacks, but imagine if I do lose this 3 stone and everybody thinks I must have been using WLIs so I'm a "cheat"! THAT'S fucking annoying.

HungerHunger · 11/08/2025 20:10

Why are you so invested in this?

99% of colleagues bullshit. I had a male colleague who wore a very obvious wig but acted like it was his hair and the visible glue was dry skin. It’s weird but ultimately probably something he was insecure about so I noticed it…and immediately let it go.

PurpleChrayn · 11/08/2025 20:09

Leave the wench alone. Sheesh.

SkylarFalls · 11/08/2025 20:08

betnet · 11/08/2025 19:48

No my whole nose was not in her bag. But I don't walk around with a blindfold on either.

So what dose is she on? On my WLIs the dose is more highlighted/clearer to read than the actual drug name, which you can't read from a distance, the drug name isn't as bold...

Piccolomaforte · 11/08/2025 20:05

I’m with you, OP. People have a right to lose weight however they like, but it irritates me that at least three people I know well are very clearly not being open about how they’re losing quite so much weight and pretending it’s suddenly down to diet and exercise - despite having tried this numerous times.
I saw them in one friend’s fridge and didn’t say anything, despite the fact when other friends arrived, she completely denied it and said she has just been ‘restricting portions’. Why lie? Good on you for doing it either way, but be honest.

TY78910 · 11/08/2025 20:05

Crunchymum · 11/08/2025 17:36

Sure thing.

People bring their (expensive and more often than not refrigerated) weightloss pens to work and also happen to leave it in plain sight of the OP.

Absolutely did not happen.

Once you’ve used your mounjaro pen it does not have to be in the fridge for up to 30 days.

OP, I agree with PPs that being on WLI is nobody’s business and doesn’t need to be ‘admitted’ to. You do also need to be on a healthier diet with WLI, they don’t automatically make you lose weight.

I do however get your point about someone going round holier than thou telling people that they should be eating better, and judging their choice of crisps over celery sticks being much, whether she was on WLI or not.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 11/08/2025 20:04

Weepixie · 11/08/2025 17:36

She owes you nothing by way of explaining her weight loss and all the more so just so you can have a gotcha or I knew you were moment.

You need to keep yourself busier at work and get over yourself.

MrsSunshine2b · 11/08/2025 19:40

Oh please don't mistake me, we are not friends but unfortunately for both of us are obligated to stay loosely in touch. If my friends were on WLIs they'd just say it, not go about pretending that they'd suddenly and miraculously reformed their characters. But then they don't subscribe to the notion that overweight is a personality flaw to begin with so there would not need to be any shame in it.

Reformed their characters 😂 Not changed their eating habits but reformed their fucking characters.

betnet · 11/08/2025 19:46

Why post on the thread if you think it is so unpleasant?

Because I wanted to make that point. What's your problem?

Doyouthinktheyknow · 11/08/2025 19:56

I do find it odd how losing weight seems to mean your lifestyle becomes everyone else’s business to comment on!

Whether she is on WLI or not, it’s her medical information to share as she wishes.

I have lost weight, not using injections (not that it really matters) and I hate people mentioning it! It makes me uncomfortable to talk about it because it feels quite personal and I’ve had people ask what I am taking to lost weight which is even more personal.

I think generally we should all just mind our own business and avoid mentioning weight changes unless the person themselves brings it up.

She could be on it for diabetes, and they still should be kept in the fridge once opened - why would she carry around a very expensive thing that she only needs to use once a week?

Poppinjay · 11/08/2025 19:54

She sounds most unpleasant to be around.

Could you just start asking her to stop talking about what others eat. She has no idea what eating issues or even disorders her colleagues could be experiencing. Protecting colleagues from this behaviour would be my biggest concern.

Could you take her on one side and explain that you don't give a hoot how she is losing the weight but you are concerned about the effect of her comments on others and please could she stop?

In use insulin is actually best used at room temperature. The not in use pens are kept in the fridge.

Although in this weather both are probably better off in the fridge it might be tipping out of safe range for either at room temperature
