To not want neighbours cats in my garden?

Rainbow3210 · 11/08/2025 14:46

Our neighbour has cats and they keep coming into our garden. They have also made their way into our house several times through the window and back door. I’m currently pregnant and have two young children. The children get upset when they come in as they don’t understand why they come and go (they want them to stay to play with). We have a lot of songbirds birds that sit in a bush in our garden and the cats are constantly trying to hunt the birds.

The cats are also doing the toilet in the garden which my husband has to clean with a hose. I believe it’s not entirely safe to clean up cat mess when pregnant.

I spoke to the neighbour and asked if they could stop the cats coming into my house and garden. They said there is nothing that can be done.

Is it unreasonable that this is bothering me?

This is what annoys me about cats! They can supposedly go anywhere they please, shit where they like and even into other peoples houses!
Dogs on the other hand…whole different set of rules for them!!!

Well, yeah, have you ever seen a dog gracefully scale a fence?

In the UK they have a right to roam by law. Dogs by law have to be under control.

After reading all the outright hatred of cats on here, people insisting that owners should keep them indoors, or trap them in their garden, putting barbed wire on top of fences, or encouraging their children to throw rocks at them, I'm really glad that in the 40 years I've owned cats I've never had any neighbour complain about my cats, every single one of which has roamed freely in other people's gardens and maybe even had a shit in them.

Not one of the vitriolic, hate-filled posts has made me think about restricting my cat, in fact completely the opposite, because most of the anti-cat brigade on here seem to have the most laughably ridiculous expectations, clearly know zilch about cats and appear to be verging on lunacy.

I don't hate cats, sheep, alpacas, goats or donkeys. I don't want any of them in my garden though and I don't want them coming into my garden to shit.

ListOfJobsKeepsGrowing · 12/08/2025 22:13

28°C in DS's room tonight.
Finally gave up and accepted I had to shut the window as the room was sticking from cat shit on the flat roof as mentioned earlier.
Went to the window only to find a pair of eyes looking back at me.
Shouted at it, it just looked at me.
Sat there while I went to the bathroom, filled a bottle of water, returned, opened window wider and threw the water at it.

Little shit didn't care at all.

Genuinely can't understand everyone on this thread who doesn't see this as a problem.
There are literally mounds on my roof I can't safely access, but I just have to accept it.

My son had more freedom in a cramped flat than this house we a garden we can use and now even upstairs is disgusting if we simply want a bit of air.

Why do you think cats have a right to roam? They are just someone else's property. In Freemantle they are require to be contained by law. It will be like that everywhere eventually. I remember when I was a kid, dogs were allowed to roam freely. No one would draem of allowing that now.

there are loads of animals that poo in your garden though- why just focus on the cats? How do you stop any wildlife entering and doing their business in your flowerbeds?

Cats aren't wildlife. They are property.

If you shit in my garden it will be the last time you empty your bowels

So you're very much in favour of killing anybody or anything that comes and poos in your garden, then? Got it.

That's assuming you understood the simple point that PP was making?

If you think that is torture I advise you to not read the news about what people are doing to cats and kittens online and in trees in rural areas. I don't like cats, at all, but this even made me feel sorry for them. It was quite sickening to be honest and I expect that the children that did it will probably be named soon. But seriously, if I had a cat (and presumably liked or cared about it) and I lived in those areas, I absolutely wouldn't let it exercise it's "right to roam".

I saw the headline title a few days back
I didn’t read it
Some People are sick and evil and I hope they all rot in hell !

It’s absolutely not a reasonable policy that all cats should be kept inside. It interferes with their natural instincts and can be severely detrimental to health and wellbeing. Yes some cats, depending on their personality can be happy in such conditions, but our cat was becoming so wild and anxious when we tried to keep in inside. The change in her when we allowed her out to roam was significant. Animal poo is part of the outdoors.

Picking up animal poo is part and parcel of being a responsible pet owner- I do hope you offer to do this if a neighbour can prove it’s your cat. Mine do thankfully!

That's not a garden, it's an ecological desert.

And you worry about cats destroying nature.

You need to relax a bit. Stop cleaning, clearing, watering, let the grass grow, leave some weeds, allow piles of leaves to build up. Welcome nature, and cats, into your life. You will feel better for it, and nature will thank you.

No thanks- that just spells lazy to me.

I've taught my children (have 4) to throw rocks at the cats that come in our garden. It's a made a difference. It's something I wouldn't have dreamt of doing in the past but the amount of cat poo was becoming a health hazard. My sons have a good aim. Having an animal that defecates in your neighbours gardens makes you a real lowlife IMO but strangely it's normalised in the UK.

This is vile, shame on you

I'm an animal. I have a right to roam. Can I poo in your garden?

Or is it actually NOT the same when domestic creatures come n do it?

TheBirdintheCave · 12/08/2025 18:41

I feel your pain. Our back garden neighbours have two cats who like to poop in our garden (sometimes just openly on the lawn!) and we have small kids.

We asked if they could encourage the cats to use the litter tray more (treat training, a garden border etc) and the neighbours told us they’d try a border. They then proceeded to put plastic turf everywhere! 🙄

Personally I don’t see the point in owning an animal you never see that just goes round causing a nuisance to your neighbours 🤷🏻‍♀️ Our fences are all scratched to bits as well 🤦🏻‍♀️

People are mainly angry about poo in the garden though

So I’m asking is fox poo OK.

Im not personally an expert in what species the poos in our garden comes from. Except for rabbit poo which is quite distinctive.

I don’t have cameras to find the culprits

We are rural with a lot of wildlife though
Poo is just poo imo. I just clear it up

Yes fox poo is fine.

godmum56 · 12/08/2025 18:28

tinyspiny · 12/08/2025 18:24

@DrPrunesqualer You can easily tell the difference between fox poo and cat poo particularly if you’ve owned a terrier that thinks rolling in fox poo is exciting . Yes it is totally to do with other peoples pets .

this.

tinyspiny · 12/08/2025 18:26

@DrPrunesqualer that is even worse 🤮

‘Let me explain’. Hold on I may need to

So it’s just to do with other people’s pets then @tinyspiny
Poo in general and picking it up from your garden isn’t the issue as long as it’s not from someone else’s cat.

Now
How can you distinguish poos 🕵️

DrPrunesqualer · 12/08/2025 17:46

tinyspiny · 12/08/2025 17:33

@DrPrunesqualer let me explain - none of us want to pick up poo that is in our garden that doesn’t belong to our own personal pets that we have chosen to get and look after . With actual native wildlife we pick up the poo because they don’t have an owner to keep them away from my property .With the local cats , most of us that object to the poo / killing etc would like the owners to keep the cats on their property as they are the ones that chose to get the pet . WRT dogs , there is a law that says you have to pick up poo it’s nothing to do with keeping people safe or dangerous dogs they are different laws .

'So Is the issue that it’s certain poos that are OK and people are fine with clearing it up Or Is the issue really that some people just hate cats'

I like cats.

The issue is not poo per se, for example I pick up my dogs poo but I would not pick up other people's dog poo.

The issue is when people let their pets roam and poo in other people's gardens.

Again. What about foxes and rabbits and rats tho. Someone’s got to pick that up. I do but they aren’t my pets
I just get on and do it.
No one can stop cats roaming because it’s not in their nature. Dogs have to be kept under control and on leads because some are dangerous. That’s why they can’t roam around, it’s not to do with their poo it’s to do with keeping people safe

They can't help it. They don't have owners with a litter tray.

That’s not what I’m asking though.

Im asking
Poo is Poo and some people on here gav an issue with poo. I’m thinking poster upthread who spends hours in their garden etc. and doesnt want poo in it.
