To not want neighbours cats in my garden?

Rainbow3210 · 11/08/2025 14:46

Our neighbour has cats and they keep coming into our garden. They have also made their way into our house several times through the window and back door. I’m currently pregnant and have two young children. The children get upset when they come in as they don’t understand why they come and go (they want them to stay to play with). We have a lot of songbirds birds that sit in a bush in our garden and the cats are constantly trying to hunt the birds.

The cats are also doing the toilet in the garden which my husband has to clean with a hose. I believe it’s not entirely safe to clean up cat mess when pregnant.

I spoke to the neighbour and asked if they could stop the cats coming into my house and garden. They said there is nothing that can be done.

Is it unreasonable that this is bothering me?

As of this afternoon he has now been spraying the actual cat. They’ve come back twice for two more sprays so it hasn’t deterred yet but we shall live in hope. We are in discussions about how much we can actually invest in other cat proofing measures as with two young kids and maternity leave on the horizon means money has to be managed carefully.

Yes, that’s another thing to add to the list, assuming we have endless money to throw at the problem.

Three kids were arrested for killing a man today - that's what happens when atrocious parents tell their kids to torture things to death for fun. Be very careful about being psychos, a child killed a cat for fun in our town last year and trust me, social media has ruined her life!

If your son starts killing cats then I imagine him going to prison will give you a lot more problems than a bit of cat shit.
You sound like you need locking up yourself quite honestly.

If you have a fence out Pidgin spikes on it, you can get them from Amazon

Your husband should spray water at the cat, not next to it, and I would be bagging up and throwing the cat waste over the fence for the neighbour to sort

I would also put in as many cat repellant plants as I can

As to the back door you can get net door things, get one and put it up, it will allow air in but not the cats

I had a cat, it never left my garden. I catproofed my fence and it could not jump on to the top of the fence. It is doable, and it is the responsibility of the cat owner.

You sound lovely, and exactly like my lovely next door neighbour. She planted beautiful roses and honeysuckle which grew up our shared fence spilling beautifully over our shared top- I have never had any issues with her cats. She is so considerate, she even offered to trim them but I was like no way, I am so pleased that your beautiful idea is stopping many cats using that fence (they can’t walk along it!), I will happily trim them, I do loads of gardening any way!

Your efforts with this will genuinely be appreciated so much by your lucky neighbours 😊

I've taught my children (have 4) to throw rocks at the cats that come in our garden. It's a made a difference. It's something I wouldn't have dreamt of doing in the past but the amount of cat poo was becoming a health hazard. My sons have a good aim. Having an animal that defecates in your neighbours gardens makes you a real lowlife IMO but strangely it's normalised in the UK.

Throwing rocks at animals and teaching your children to do so is what makes you the lowlife scum actually.
Teaching children that animal cruelty is acceptable is a sign of someone that should never have been allowed to reproduce.

No, you told me I am wrong for adopting! I told you that if people stop adopting and turning cats into pets, then more ferals and strays wander the streets breeding, spraying, shitting,.killing wildlife to survive! If people like don't adopt, the cat rescues can't take them off the street.

TonTonMacoute · 11/08/2025 19:44

Unfortunately many people who own cats, do not care what the cat gets up to when it leaves their house.

I can assure I care very much what my cats get up to. I would much prefer it if they stayed safely in our garden (which is huge) and didn't wander off. I would much prefer it if other peoples cats didn't come into our garden. And I would very much prefer it if they didn't hunt - except for the rats, pigeons and magpies, they can hunt them!

But they are cats, so I cannot control what they do and don't do.

This is shocking behaviour! There are far more decent ways to deal with unwanted cats in your garden than harming them!

They don’t wear collars. I am thinking a bell on the collar might deter them killing the birds? They have caught a couple of small bluetits.

As a cat owner I’ve always had collars with bells on, unfortunately it doesn’t always stop the occasional bird.

But not all cats are predators, I have two cats one cannot and will not catch anything

Buxusmortus · 11/08/2025 19:41

So would you personally be happy to pick up cat poo daily in your private garden if you had chosen not to own an animal? I think not.

Of course I would. That's what comes of living with neighbours. Sometimes you have to put up with things you don't like. I have to listen to neighbours' music outside in summer, smell their barbecues, put up with the sound of their trampolines and basketballs, all of which I find very irritating.

Snugglemonkey · 11/08/2025 19:40

SkylarFalls · 11/08/2025 18:56

Yeah, see all the things people are being told to build to and add to keep cats out, just do all that, but in reverse to keep em in!

If it's simple to keep cats out it'll be simple to keep em in right?

All cats are rescues. But they're also all strays.

None are bred or chosen as kittens which increases cat populations.

All scat is foxes

All cat homes are simultaneously too small to be converted in any way for indoor cat enrichment, and also farms cause rescues says they all gotta be outdoor cats..

Duh...

You need medication! Your comment is an incomprehensible mess! Cats that come from breeders are not rescues. Your comment is too bizarre I'm afraid.

You are absolutely not being unreasonable. Unfortunately people have a very selfish attitude towards pets in general and cats in particular. They want their interactive fluffy toys and everyone else can go and fuck themselves. This is unlikely to end anytime soon so you are correct, you just have to put up with it.

In Freemantle, Australia, cat owners are fined if their cats are found outside. Fingers crossed, that may be introduced into the UK sometime in the future:

In Fremantle, Western Australia, cats are effectively banned from roaming freely in public areas. According to Sky News, the city council has implemented changes to its cat management laws, designating all city-owned land, including roads, verges, and bushland, as cat prohibited areas. This means cats must be kept indoors or on a leash when outdoors.

Key points about Fremantle's cat laws:
Prohibited Areas: All public areas owned or managed by the City of Fremantle are cat prohibited areas, including roads, verges, footpaths, and car parks.

Wildlife Protection: The primary reason for these laws is to protect native wildlife from being preyed upon by domestic cats.

Responsible Pet Ownership: The aim is not to ban cats entirely, but to encourage responsible pet ownership by keeping cats contained, either indoors or in secure outdoor enclosures like a catio.

Fines for Violations: Owners who allow their cats to roam in prohibited areas may face fines.

Leash Policy: Cats can be walked outdoors if they are on a lead.

Formal Ratification: The amended local law requires formal ratification by the State Government before it comes into effect.

Thanks for posting this, although it might give a certain poster an attack of the vapours.

Hang on hang on...

We were told that cat owners gardens are to SMALL for catios...

Now we have leaped to rural farm cats (which nobody complained about and isn't relevant to any of the examples stated this far in the threat...

The cats that rescues are only rehoming on farms... Cannot in the same breath be the same cats that cannot be CRUELLY contained in owners teeny urban gardens, if they even have gardens at all!,

I don't understand your angry rant? I've not spoke about catios? What are you telling lies for? Ive said that ex ferals and strays are complicated, some strays won't go indoors at all. I've not mentioned garden size? Where is this freaky rant coming from about things I've not once mentioned! I'm telling you as any cat rescue would tell you that not all cats can be contained indoors and there will always be cats walking about because there's a stray cat problem. We all get shit in our gardens.

Stop their cats getting out of the garden by catproofing. Like any considerate neighbours.

Exactly how do you catproof a garden so they can’t get out. It isn’t being inconsiderate (and no I don’t have cats) but they can climb far higher than a six foot fence, can easily jump between things, can climb overhanging trees etc. I just think it really isn’t possible.

So you want mass abandonment and mass cull of all cats? That's highly disgusting! I adopt rescues! Do you want them all dead? Fuck me your mindset is beyond help! Thing is that cat rescues take strays and ferals of the street, they get neutered and become pets that like mine barely leave our property, you want people to stop owning cats, that means the rescues can no longer take them off the street if they can't home them, if they can't take them off the street and you would just have lots of roaming strays and ferals that breed like hell and kill wildlife to survive. Your comment is pretty silly isn't it?

It was a long time ago, so I cannot remember, but it was quite a substantial amount. We had a very large flat roof on a kitchen extension, covered in white gravel chippings, (which on old asphalt style roofs was supposed to protect them) and one day a local cat decided this was the perfect giant litterbox!! The stench wafted into the house, we went on the roof and removed all the poop, then over a course of a couple of months tried every anti-cat product sold in the local hardware stores and garden centres. None of them worked, we were still removing poop frequently, one smelt almost as bad as the poop (I think that was the garlic one). We never saw the cat, or I woukd have tried a water pistol, it must have been a nocturnal pooper. In the end we simply swept all the chippings off and washed the roof with a very strong solution of Flash, and it finally stopped.

Thanks. I’m glad you got there in the end!
