Coffees in London are around £4 now. I definitely don’t get one myself every day, but between me and my husband we definitely average out at spending this per day just on coffee. We just worked out, spending £4 a day on coffee every day, is almost £1,500 a year. Just on takeaway coffee. Insane. Over 20 years, that’s just under £30,000…

Mounjaro- costs me almost 200 per month but the health and confidence benefits are priceless. Plus I can fit back in all my lovely old clothes.

Food delivery- I spend a small fortune using Deliveroo, Uber Eats etc for grocery deliveries. I live in a city centre so have sooo much choice and it's just really convenient as a single Mum with a stressful job. I could easily save a few hundred a month by being more organised and sensible.

TV subscriptions- I have so many! I've just cancelled 3, saving just over 20 per month.

Eyebrows- wax and tint costing about 25 every 6 weeks. But they look great after and I can't recreate it at home, I've tried!

With food I try to make as much from scratch as I can so i have my own little herb garden. Im starting to grow my own veg aswell. We never have any ready meals or jars of sauces. I bought a meat slicer so yesterday's roast has loads of slices left for sandwiches today. We stopped getting takeaways as every time we got one we felt bloated and crap afterwards. I've really focused on putting together new recipes and I enjoy it so much.

Tana433 · 11/08/2025 08:03

Books. Even though i mainly buy from charity shops or World of Books it still adds up and i have so many on my tbr now that i will only get through them all on the off-chance i live to be 135 yrs old!

Lampzade · 11/08/2025 08:00

The gym- but I actually use it regularly
The cleaner- but she is excellent and my house looks amazing when she has come

My bi monthly eye extensions - but it saves time and my eyes look lovely

I will not give up any of these things

Woodythewonderpony · 11/08/2025 08:00

Another horses one here. DH dabbled in racehorses for a time too😬 would be millionaires now if we had never had horses. But I’d rather live in a caravan in a field than give up my horse.

I gave up smoking a couple of months ago, £20 per day 😬

I remember swearing I would give up when a pack reached a tenner.

Well done 👏🏽 I cannot fathom how anybody could spend over £500 a month on cigarettes. How many a day does this relate to? I’m shocked

SusanChurchouse · 11/08/2025 07:58

Not a small thing but my car. I gave up alcohol in 2021 and bought myself an EV as a reward and I do love it but I could manage without it.

I got a cleaner when I started cancer treatment and now not sure I want to give it up!

I have a few small subscriptions that I could cancel but they’re mostly independent businesses, artists and media and I quite like supporting them.

OxfordInkling · 11/08/2025 07:58

I’d save £nearly 3k if I did my own cleaning. If the price keeps rising I might do so. But I really really hate doing it myself.

But at the same time, we could go to Mexico for a week AI on that money.

Pricelessadvice · 11/08/2025 06:52

Horses. It would save me about £15k per year.

This . If I hadn’t had horses I could probably have retired 10yrs earlier .

DancingNotDrowning · 11/08/2025 07:49

I spend enough on clothes to buy myself a (small) new car every year, but I do love clothes so that would be hard.

Would love to knock take aways on the head - nearly always disappointing and for 6 of us a once or twice a week habit is expensive

Paetina · 11/08/2025 07:48

Flowers, random Vinted/eBay bargains and Kindle books. I could also put cleaner and Pilates but the benefits for my wellbeing are too great.

Things already reduced; posh bakery visits, hairdresser (now every six months), Deliveroo and alcohol at home.

Giving up browsing Kindle daily deals, Vinted (except targeted searches for replacements), Mumsnet Style and Beauty threads and instagram would probably lead to me cutting out 90% of my non essential purchases.

JaffavsCookie · 11/08/2025 07:42

My horse, could probably give up work and live on pension from my last job. Not a chance in hell though.

Missingducks · 11/08/2025 07:41

We played with the idea of only having one car (and a motorbike) and thus saving on insurance, road tax, fuel, repairs etc. But perhaps we aren't natural sharers after all! After 3 days we bought a second car again.

IDontHateRainbows · 11/08/2025 07:39

Perfume , ive become addicted after going on mounjaro and giving up junk food.
Mounjaro doesn't cost as its prescribed on the nhs and I'm spending less on food but probably £200 or so on my new habit each month

Apparently very common with these weight loss drugs!

Horses7 · 11/08/2025 07:39

Clothes and shoes - think I’ve got enough for the rest of my life even if I live to be 100!

Taking people out for dinner. For decades I thought being able to take an entire group of people out for dinner was the height of sophistication and generosity and I longed to do it. Then finally I earned enough to do it occasionally but I do it far too bloody often. I would save a few grand a year if I stopped. But I love doing it. And what is money for, once you have covered the basics? I don't buy expensive clothes. Never had my nails done, ever. Only get a hair cut twice a year. Never buy takeaways.

That is really lovely. Also, do you want a new friend?

keepingonrunning · 11/08/2025 07:36

Smoking / vaping

Sgtmajormummy · 11/08/2025 07:35

It’s funny to see that nobody mentions magazines. 10 years ago they were “a treat for a long train journey “, now…nothing.

Mine is china and glass sets. If one piece breaks or the novelty wears off I think it’s fine to buy another full set and ship the old one off to University or first time homes with random young people I know. Same with bedding and towels.

Over 30 years maybe £1000?

Like a PP I could say Vinted.
I'm totally addicted to buying clothes from there.
Some hit, some a definite miss (once tried on) I find it almost as relaxing as Mumsnet for nightly browsing 😁

Also - and probably more savings to be had - lottery and Euromillions tickets.
I buy more than I should if it's a biggie 🫠

Agree re the National Lottery, Euromillions etc - I too have decided that not only have I been spending too much on them since it became easy online, I object to some of the very dubious causes they've started supporting, like organisations that go into schools to tell young children about transgender ideology. I've just let them know that I'm stopping playing for that reason, adding that I must have spent thousands over the years and have never won more than a few most basic prizes. Really they should pay our more smaller prizes, but I'm out!

Oh this is amazing! I gave up Diet Coke for 5 months and it was great, have started again now though. And what’s more annoying is I waste more money on buying it individually as I try not to have it in the house in bulk. Please update one day on how much you save!

Try this as a reason for giving it up again. All cola drinks contain an ingredient which gives the drink its dark colour. This ingredient has been found to block the absorption of calcium in the body and consumed in large amounts over time, it can cause osteoporosis. I was told this by my GP when l was first diagnosed with the condition, after asking was there anything l should stay away from.

This is one of those threads that makes me think I must be the poorest person on MN!

Same here.

I spend too much on perfume, reed diffusers, scented candles, anything that smells nice. I need to stop it.

Gardening. I dread to think how much I spend!

This would be mine too. I am at the garden centre tomorrow and despite saying I have no more room for plants, I just know I will come home with something ...
