32 weeks pregnant. Why do people need to comment on other people's pregnancies.

Sigh. I'd be interested to read stories of similar interactions so I don't feel like the only one!

Oh, I got this all the time. It's just pregnancy small talk - I didn't take it personally.

It’s hard to view it that calmly after mcs though. I have to admit I developed some rather curt responses to comments from people who should have known better.

Annoyeddd · 11/08/2025 09:38

Question to all the pregnant ladies/women/people how would like us others to refer to you.
Keep quiet
Ignore
Offer seats/assistance/comments.

One advantage in London is the availability of the baby on board badge at least we know where we stand (especially if that means giving up our seats)

ShortColdandGrey · 11/08/2025 09:36

I got asked when I was going to start glowing 😂Cheeky fucker. I had HG and looked like shit but it didn't need to be pointed out.

DoraSpenlow · 11/08/2025 09:24

I think the best thing for the rest of us is to totally ignore the fact that a woman is pregnant and not make allowances for the fact they may be feeling uncomfortable/tired. And for God's sake never offer to give up your seat on public transport for fear of causing offense.

Katemax82 · 11/08/2025 08:42

My fil was a total prick during my first 2 pregnancies, finding it funny to say stuff like "your going to have a 10lb-er"
Fucking nob
My 1st was 9lb 7 and I tore badly
My 2nd i was terrified it would happen again but she was 9lb 1 but had a smaller head so she didn't hurt coming out. After that I told fil it was a breeze. I was over confident with my 3rd, thinking id breeze it. WRONG! about r hours of painful contractions later he came out but luckily he also had a smaller head and was 7lb 8.
My fil had died by the time I had my 4th

Flatandhappy · 11/08/2025 08:35

The comments are annoying but nothing compared to people who thought it appropriate to put their hands on my bump. Total strangers, more than one of them. I’m not a violent person but the desire to punch was real.

birdling · 11/08/2025 08:10

I remember when my daughter was a newborn, I was in a charity shop, with her in a pram buying a pretty lampshade.
The women behind the counter asked if it was for my granddaughter.
I said no, for my daughter.
She said, oh, when are you due?
🤯
So I got called old and fat in one fell swoop.

CommentHere · 10/08/2025 23:12

I over heard someone commenting on my size in work. She said "is that girl still pregnant?" as if I should have had the baby long ago, probably looking 40 weeks at 25:weeks.

FlowersAndFruit · 10/08/2025 22:44

The best reactions I have had this pregnancy have been in London on the underground. People simply stood, gestured to their seat and smiled.

I can't fathom how people think it's OK to comment on someone else's stomach. I wouldn't go up to an overweight person and say "are you sure you only had one dinner tonight?"

Though my wobbly tummy was so convincing to the neighbour that I was really struggling to get her to believe that no, it's just cake in there.

Oh I will remember these silly comments ! DS is older now but I am 5ft 0 and he was 7 pounds 5 ounces .Just all out front as well.People saying 2 months to go ? You look ready now. or Are you sure .Well yes ,had scans 7 in total as DS had kidney problems and needed regular extra scans!

caramac04 · 10/08/2025 19:58

I got sick of ‘Haven’t you had that baby yet?’
Erm, no. I’m still obviously pregnant but actually nowhere near due.
People, for some reason, feel the need to comment but usually come out with rubbish.
I wish I could offer advice to deal with it.

Frecklebaby · 10/08/2025 19:55

I had the opposite and was told I was too small by a couple of people which made me worry. My friend's mum especially insisted I was too small and told me to make a midwife appointment. My baby was over 8 pounds at birth!

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 10/08/2025 19:42

Friend of mine is pregnant with DC4 and carries big (she wont mind me saying, she was 40 weeks on a birthday of mine and signed my card Love the whale x 😂) and if someone says that or another rude comment about her size, she likes to tell them shes not pregnant with a confused look on her face or sad with a little sniffle. She's V good at it and it makes people incredibly awkward 😁

EpsilonOne · 10/08/2025 19:37

I got a lot of this too. At a routine check up, another couple were in the lift with us and the husband remarked to my DH that it was nice to see someone else pregnant with triplets. They were bemused when we told them that there was in fact just the one baby in there. I was enormous but didn't realise it was quite that extreme 😂

Also lots of comments like wow you're so fat! You're so big! And when I was 5 months: wow, I didn't get that big until my baby was born (we don't live in the UK so it's more culturally acceptable to say this stuff here). People are rude but I mostly found it amusing.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 10/08/2025 19:27

I was absolutely massive on DS1, the comments really annoyed me. I wasn't as big when I had twins a few years later. Although it's annoying I think its a strange way of celebrating another little human coming into the world, try to think of it that way. They are really saying wow good for you, you have made another one of us!! The same people who drove me mad when pg became a bit of a comfort when baby was born, telling me how cute DS1 was when in fact he was really difficult, everyone commented on the twins and it made me feel proud and happy when I was stressed and exhausted.

Thattimeofthenight · 10/08/2025 19:18

People who say these things are very simple in the head. Stupid people say stupid shit.

Odellio · 10/08/2025 19:16

37 weeks and yesterday opened the front door to someone buying something off Facebook marketplace. They immediately said “Oh WOW, you are VERY heavily pregnant”. Not necessary, just take the damn item and go away.

girlwhowearsglasses · 10/08/2025 19:13

I once got into a lift at the hospital at around 32 weeks pregnant with actual twins. I’ll never forget the expression on the face of the barely visibly pregnant young woman that got in with me. So much so that I had to reassure her that she would definitely not be as big as me as I was having twins. I think she may have actually cried.

InSpainTheRain · 10/08/2025 18:56

I agree with you OP! It's 24 years since I was pregnant, I had twins. I also got sick of the comments, but on a couple of occasions i took perverse pleasure in sometimes giving made up answers.

"Looks like you've got 2 in there!" "Oh no! don't say that I gave birth 4 weeks ago, she was tiny". Pretend sniffle. That sort of thing. Usually they are mortified and it shuts them up!

tarheelbaby · 10/08/2025 18:52

Yeah, pregnancy, check your personal existance at the door and move on :)
So many people will be in your business. And after baby is born, so many more will be up in your baby's face and giving you comments. So perfect the icy smile and the 'thank you' dripping with sarcasm as appropriate.

That said, after each DD was born, so many people, mostly kindly ladies were lovely. They remembered those sweet, sweet days and had sweet smiles to match: mainly a little grin/wave aimed at the baby.

DD1 has fabulous Titian hair. Women and even men ! came up to me to tell about their relatives (auntie, cousin, granny, mum, sister) who had similar hair and their happy memories of her which was also lovely.

Ilovemyshoes · 10/08/2025 18:46

I remember that with three big babies. The day after my first was born a woman asked me when the baby was due 😩

Oh yes I had this one. Why, my baby is here in the pram before you!

pinkstripeycat · 10/08/2025 18:45

When I was pregnant a man at work who I’d never spoken to said “Your legs have got big haven’t they?”

I don’t think he’d even seen me before I was pregnant as he was a carer and I worked in an office with 1 other person where carers didn’t need to be. No idea why he came in the office. I got the impression he just wanted to make a comment regardless of what it was.

Also got asked by a woman serving me in a shop if I was having a boy as the animal wall stickers I was buying were for boys. Animals only for boys? Eh? 😂

There was a lady at my children’s primary school who would mention the fact I wasn’t wearing a coat EVERY FRICKING TIME I SAW HER IN THE PLAYGROUND!

I was like a furnace for the last few weeks of pregnancy. If I wanted a coat on, I’d have put one on.

Phew, been sitting on that for ten years 😂

But the baby could catch a chill, dear! 🤪

Yes I'm roasting too.

I actually did have two in there, at my last appt with my midwife before my section for a laugh we measured my bump and I measured 50 weeks pregnant haha. My GOD the comments on my size. It was infuriating. It’s such an odd thing to comment on. I’m pregnant, massive and miserable - offer me a light snack or go away.

50 weeks! Lol. Yes to the snacks or go away!
