Supply Teacher giggling at name of child in class

Is it very unprofessional for a supply teacher to start giggling when taking the register in a class which they have not taught in before, because one of the children's names is "Bourbon"? Supply teacher in question is normally very professional but couldn't help themselves when hearing the name of the child.

Obviously it's not ok from the teacher but I have to admit I also laughed when I read it. wtf.

Yeah, it was unprofessional but it was probably a spontaneous reaction, so apologies forgiveable mistake. It's not bullying, to whomever suggested this. Bullying is repeated and consistent.

Bullying depends on the perception of the person who experiences the behaviour. It does not depend on repetition.

Is the child heir to the throne of France ?

There are far far worse names than Bourbon. My childhood nemesis had the surname Nappi. They surprisingly didn't get much teasing for it but later changed it to Nappey by deed poll.

How is that better??

SilverpetalShine · 09/08/2025 23:32

I had an amazing teacher at my school called Mr Daft. I kid you not.

ThriveAT · 09/08/2025 23:32

TinyTempest · 09/08/2025 23:02

No, I think they meant complain to the head that the teacher laughed at the child's name in front of the child and the whole class?

Might've been a spontaneous reaction though and there's not much that can be done about that.

Look it probably is unprofessional but really parents that name their kids that set them up for a lifetime of teasing over the stupid names I see out there are to blame. Same as the "can you spell that" or "how on earth do you pronounce that?!" etc
Some parents don't ever think of the kids or what they will go through when setting them up with ridiculous names or stupid spelling of common names just to be "unique".
My friend worked in family courts years ago and OMG the names of the regulars! Some of them gave us a right laugh.
It's different if it's a last name you don't pick but why burden a kid with a name they'll be laughed at for life by choice... Madness.
So year probably unprofessional but blame the people that lumped it on the poor child. They'll get plenty more laughs going through life than just that so they'll need to get used to it.

Bourbon? To be fair, it’s probably helping them build them a thick skin for the rest of their life, they’ll need it.

I’m not condoning it, honest I’m not. But why name a kid after a biscuit?

Named after region in france?

steff13 · 09/08/2025 23:20

I thought of alcohol.

And Windsor and Tudor would be odd first names.

Tudor's often used. I think it's Welsh. I've known three.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 09/08/2025 23:30

Oh how I miss the laugh reaction!

Far worse to call a child Bourbon really, the parent must know that it's going to raise eyebrows through the child's life.

Hopefully the child was named after the biscuit and not the chinniest of chinny Royal families...

chunkychoos · 09/08/2025 23:29

Yes it unprofessional.

Having been a teacher for 22 years, there isn't a single name that surprises me anymore but I wouldn't even think to laugh at a name. An internal eye roll at parental choice maybe but not a laugh, that's mean, unprofessional and childish.

ThatBlackCat · 09/08/2025 23:28

Oh come on! Stop and think about it for a moment. Who couldn't laugh at that? Maybe she couldn't hold the laugh in and it wasn't her fault. I think you are being unreasonable OP, people can't help a laugh reflex. She probably didn't laugh on purpose! That is a batshit ridiculous and insulting name for a child. That poor child! I swear some parents really hate their children and want to get revenge for a bad labor or something.

LemondrizzleShark · 09/08/2025 23:01

Complain to the head in writing that OP had a child in her class with an amusing name??

It is not amusing though. Even if it was, the teacher should have the ability to control themselves and not treat a child abominably.

I thought of the drink . .

Dontwasteyourbreath · 09/08/2025 23:26

If you saddle your child with a ridiculous name, sometimes people, including supply teachers, are going to laugh at it. Who, exactly, is surprised by this?

Augarden · 09/08/2025 23:26

Happened to my child too :( My daughter Custard Cream came home very upset!

Who on earth named their child Burbon?
😂

That kid is going to spend their life having the piss taken out of them and people laughing at their name.

May as well start getting used to it . .

OP please tell us your role in this. Are you the supply teacher, the teaching assistant, parent if a child involved?

Very unprofessional. Really takes the biscuit.

🤣

pinkstripeycat · 09/08/2025 23:22

I used a solicitor once whose surname was Boobyer. I was told to call him Mr Boobyay not BoobyER. Nope still has boob in it!

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/08/2025 23:22

You lot are really taking the biscuit now 😂

ElfAndSafetyBored · 09/08/2025 23:22

Someone I used to know actually had his family name changed because his primary school teachers laughed at it. That’s what he told me anyway. He never told me what it was originally (we weren’t that close).

I always wondered if they were just thin skinned and it was just something like Pratt or Butt (perfectly good names) or if it was something really funny like Wanker or Bastard.

I’ll never know.

Or an alcoholic drink. No not professional but coulda seen this coming day one.

ScrambledEggs12 · 09/08/2025 23:21

Custard Cream would be funnier!
