Supply Teacher giggling at name of child in class

Is it very unprofessional for a supply teacher to start giggling when taking the register in a class which they have not taught in before, because one of the children's names is "Bourbon"? Supply teacher in question is normally very professional but couldn't help themselves when hearing the name of the child.

I mean, it’s not my favourite name, but to find it that amusing you’d have to think it was a biscuit rather than a Franco-Spanish royal house. I mean, it’s no odder than using Windsor or Tudor as a first name.

which would be very odd, if not downright funny

VeryQuaintIrene · 11/08/2025 14:23

I guess it's no worse than Chardonnay or Brandy...

CarefulN0w · 11/08/2025 14:11

OP if you are the Supply teacher it might not be great, but you are only human.

I remember being pregnant during when footballers wives with Chardonnay was on. We had great fun deciding to name future DC Shiraz or Bud.

I have a relative called Tudor BTW.

Nope, they could either be a whiny parent, a whiny staff member, or the teacher who did nothing wrong.

What a whiny post.

No teacher should react to a child's name in that way. It was extremely unprofessional and I hope it has been reported. The teacher needs to be told her reaction was inappropriate. School should not request her back. There are thousands of kids with unfortunate names, but every child deserves to feel proud of who they are and their name is part of that.

Hahahahaha! I love a comedy comment 😅

Eh? OP is obviously the teacher (if this isn't a WUT).

Surely the parents are the ones at fault for naming their child after a biscuit?

The parents clearly did not like that kid d calling it bourbon lol

OP buggered off, clearly embarrassed by their massive over reaction.

Probably posts on here from the suggestions I have read on the baby names threads

No into scared to these Airheads clearly don't realise babies have to grow up and go out into the world saddled with what ever name the airhead give them

thisistoofunny · 10/08/2025 06:36

Oh, do shut up.

Or, if you are the one who giggled, ignore the idiot harassing you about it.

@RosesAndHellebores That’s ok, thank you for the apology.

Oh dear, do you feel better, now you’ve got that off your chest.
F.Y.I, l never professed, to be well educated, l just know it’s rude and unnecessary to correct people’s grammar, when you know exactly what they meant.
But there we go, there’s always, one, or two, who think, putting other’s down, make them more superior🙄

I do apologise, I thought you were criticising the op. I see now it was a previous poster.

Just like well educated posters should say would have rather than would of?

There are typos caused by fat fingers, screens and speed. Would of is not one of them.

First name or second name? There are the Bacardi family, just as there are the Cadbury’s etc

This was a first name. Surname was pretty generic (Smith, Jones, etc)

Would of thought many posters realised this, but chose not to correct this poster.

Bourbon? To be fair, it’s probably helping them build them a thick skin for the rest of their life, they’ll need it.

I’m not condoning it, honest I’m not. But why name a kid after a biscuit?

Oh, I was thinking whiskey?

Justchilling07 · 10/08/2025 14:22

bumbaloo · 10/08/2025 12:47

Were. Not was. And I’m not saying this to be a self righteous pedant but because I don’t like the idea of someone going around life being judged for something they probably were not taught correctly from infancy.

Would of thought many posters realised this, but chose not to correct this poster.

It's possible for both the parents and the teacher to be at fault. Parents giving an ill-advised name does not actually make it necessary for a teacher to laugh at it in front of the child.

Alwaysalert · 10/08/2025 13:57

Very amusing without being nasty.

Parkerpenny · 10/08/2025 13:51

Did this happen in the middle of August?

Pluvia · 10/08/2025 09:20

OP, depends on whether Bourbon was his first or last name. Last name, unacceptable. Bourbon is an honourable surname. First name, understandable. I blame the parents and if they didn't want this to happen they should have called him Archie or Oliver.

If it's poor Bourbon's first name, I predict he'll one day follow the lead of Zowie Bowie and change his name to Duncan or something similarly rebelliously dull.

Maybe it was Bourbon Bourbon.

digsd · 10/08/2025 13:02

cruel of the teacher, but not as cruel as a parent calling their child Bourbon ffs

SilverpetalShine · 10/08/2025 13:00

viques · 10/08/2025 11:44

Could be an even worse biscuit name. Like Garibaldi.

Mr and Mrs Tea did their boy no favours calling him Rich.

And the same could be said for Mr and Mrs Gestive and their lovely daughter Di.

Not to mention the Vitas and their son Ray.

And as for poor little Jimmy Dodger ( thanks @ShallIstart )

I did actually go to school with a Garry Baldi, but not in my year.
