To think Kate and William saw Harry and Meghan as a real threat to their image?

BluntPinkNewt · 09/08/2025 11:32

From the moment Harry and Meghan got together, the media attention was huge. Meghan was glamorous, charismatic, and had a strong public presence - something the royal family hadn’t seen before from an outsider. For a while, it felt like they were the most exciting and modern part of the monarchy.

Kate and William have always been the “stable” and “traditional” royals but suddenly, Harry and Meghan were drawing attention in a way that might have made them seem more relatable and interesting in comparison. The shift in public perception (and maybe even palace dynamics) must have been unsettling.

Obviously things have played out the way they have but AIBU to think that, at least at the time, William and Kate felt genuinely threatened by how much attention and influence Harry and Meghan were gaining?

I haven’t read the full thread but some royalist responses here are just hilarious
You claim W and K are unbothered ?
Nothing says ‘unbothered ‘ like having your assistant follow - what was it ? - about 1,400 Meghan related accounts !
Nothing says ‘unbothered’ like buying bot farms to boost your PR social media ‘responses’ - see the multiple identical posts defending Williams lazy ass when he falls to turn up yet again

But that’s all a side show . I want rid of the Windsors or at least to stop the billions they take year on year .
They clearly all hate each other - look at the tit for tat leaks all summmer long . William and Kate in their 7th holiday on a borrowed ( from whom?) yacht . Then a leak about Charles and his temper Then a leak about Camilla on another yacht .

One thing Harry was right about - they all use the media to bitch about each other .
And for this we pay half a billion a year ?
Plus the millions William and Charles pocket from the NHS and charities - oops that’s the Duchys isn’t it and this better not ask any questions about their unpaid tax peasant - that’s Sir to you !

Willian and Kate are both extremely dull. Both Harry and Meghan are better at public speaking and sound less scripted and more articulate. It's also obvious that a lot of the venom directed at Meghan was due to barely concealed racism.

Lots of people tolerated the monarchy while the Queen was alive, but Charles doesn't have the same respect. William seems as elitist and as tetchy as his father.

FondantFancyAnyone · 09/08/2025 13:56

@jumpingthehighjump , So unsuitable that he has fallen out with his father and brother, packed in his job and moved to a different continent.

At her first outing as Harry's girlfriend she wore ripped jeans.

In photos together K makes MM look dumpy and badly dressed so no

This is untrue & completely unnecessary. Why would you write such a thing

It is true. Katherine is tall, extremely elegant and always perfectly dressed. Meghan is a lot shorter, dumpier and not so well dressed

You have very old school views, possibly from coming from another culture, comes across as old fashioned views, the type that keep people down, Usual this side of Europe.

What does it mean to keep people down? You mean to tell it as it is and have clear moral compass? Of course the ones who are morally down prefer being there. Their actions have nothing to do with our opinion of them. I also have seen what you guys teach our grandkids in your schools. That is another topic altogether

From her first public appearances - Invictus Games, the engagement interview, and her early royal engagements, she brought a different energy and style that got a lot of media attention. Whether people liked her or not, she clearly made an impact.

Of course she got a lot of media attention. She was an attractive American actress who had come almost out of nowhere to marry the most high profile 'eligible' royal. Of course the media were going to be all over her, as they would with any vaguely glamorous woman marrying into the royal family.

Her post-royal trajectory, however has shown that, absent the royal mystique, Meghan is really nothing special. That's why she's flogging white-labelled 'spread' and wiggling her bum for likes on Instagram. Kate and William, by contrast, may seem 'dull', but 'dull' isn't necessarily a bad thing when you're a future King and Queen.

I would say there are die hard supporters or bots on both sides. Because they all receive online hate. Plenty of supporters and haters on both sides.

I agree but do notice Meghan gets a lot of ridicule compared to the others considering she has said next to nothing since the Oprah interview in 2021. She went back to the things she was doing before she met Harry and people still have an issue. Pretty juvenile and unsurprising for the British tabloid media to trash her products before they were even released and trying to stir up controversy against her with other women like Gwyneth Paltrow and the Brook Shields things was just weird.

Reminds me of when she was pregnant with Archie and the negative tabloid crap they did. Ok for Kate to touch her belly and eat avocados but not Meghan.

I am old and foreign. My daughters married here with local guys and brought me over. I just speak my mind. In my village all women think like me. Did not know defending the moral woman with strong family values and old fashioned class is now called mysoginy , but glad when I learn something new every day on here. My English was non existent last year and now I am even able to post comments. I did not have even internet in my Balkan house

YABU for posting in AIBU. There's a royal board just sitting there

Livelovebehappy · 09/08/2025 13:39

I think its a ridiculous assumption to make unless you're in their inner circle and privy to that info. None of us know the dynamics which played out initially. I liked Meghan at the time. Thought she was a breath of fresh air. But I could like both couples the same, for different reasons.

Not to me. My first impression of Meghan was how totally unsuitable for Harry she was.
She's pretty but came across as fake.

So unsuitable that they've been together for 8 years, have two little children, and are settled somewhere else.
That sort of unsuitable?!
Who would have suited Harry in your eyes?

My parents probably thought my DH was 'unsuitable'... a lot of decades later, here we still are.

Gallowayan · 09/08/2025 13:35

I am long past caring about the royal shit show.

Gettingfitorbust · 09/08/2025 13:34

Is that you Meghan?

toiletpiper · 09/08/2025 13:34

Not even First World problems for any of them. 1 couple have a glorious future ahead of them and their family and the other couple has a lovely future ahead of them in eg California with their family. Everyone is a winner imo.

Fair point!

When you join mumsnet now, there are suggested usernames and they seem to follow this format. There are a lot of usernames like it all over the site now, not just Meghan and Harry supporters, so I presume it’s because they use the suggested names instead of choosing their own.

Thanks @SmartDog!
I had only seen a few variations on the rf topic , makes perfect sense 😁

why do m and h supporters always have three word user names?
and the same format too ?
discripter , colour , animal?
@BluntPinkNewtthanks

@jeffgoldblum of course you can ask.
But I had a similar response when I brought up Andrew on a RF thread, just checking if it works both ways. Thanks for clarifying!

@jeffgoldblum why not start a thread about that?

Because I’m asking the op a question!
politely and she will either know the answer and tell me or not!
why do you not want me to ask?

I think that’s fair if her style of speaking doesn’t appeal to you but charisma is subjective. For a lot of people, that willingness to centre herself in those early appearances came across as fresh and engaging, especially in contrast to the more reserved royal style. That’s the contrast I was getting at.

What is charisma for you? Glamour?

Willingness to centre yourself is not charismatic for me. You must find a lot of fashion and style influencers charismatic.
