Calling all cheese lovers... abomination??

Hi everyone.

DD is in bed and I'm sat on the sofa currently scoffing a bowl of sketty hoops and grade 6 cheddar cheese. Ya know the one. Strong, gritty, salty.

it reminded me of a conversation I had with my best friend a few weeks ago. She has rather, how can I put it, juvenile taste buds. A slim suggestion of Edam and she would cower.
she cooks from scratch, as do I. She buys grade 1, occasionally pushing that boat right out, grade 2.

what in the finest pardon is that? I always assumed the pussy cheeses mild cheeses were for kids. Until I had my own child who will take chunks out of my black bomber. I cannot imagine making a béchamel for my lasagne with, effectively, milk?

AIBU? Are you a mild cheeses eater who buys the grade 1 or 2?

I fucking love cheese and I guessed a lot of mumsnetters do so thought I'd start a thread.

I had a lovely toastie for lunch with the M&S oak smoked version of the Cornish cruncher. Absolutely gorgeous and just mentioning it has made me want to go make another now.

TheSilentSister · 08/08/2025 21:57

My DS was brought up on Extra Strong Cheddar and crackers. He won't try Blue cheese though, thinks it's mouldy and I can't tell him it's not, lol.
This is an opportunistic moment to ask if anyone has had 'stilton with garlic and mushrooms'? I first had it in Belgium and then found a small cheese shop at Liverpool Street Station. It's available in a specialist cheese shop in Yorkshire (Hebden Bridge). I always ask for it elsewhere with a desperate look on my face and get odd looks. It's divine.

LastKnownSurvivor · 08/08/2025 21:55

There are times for a strong, artisan cheese and times for supermarket own-brand mild cheddar.

Thanks to cheeses!

I got a smoked scamorza from Waitrose recently - it must never cross my threshold again.

I could have eaten it like a tangerine.

Technically our ones in the netted bags are called mini babybels, we just don’t have the bigger option!

I know, I was just trying to be witty haha

TeacheeTeacherson · 08/08/2025 21:46

Mumnewname · 08/08/2025 21:12

Surely they aren't babybels, they'd just be... bels

What ??? Where ???

In Sweden.

Wineinthegarden · 08/08/2025 21:45

Love a good blue on a cracker! Not as a salad dressing though. Christmas is Stilton and port.

dreamingbohemian · 08/08/2025 21:43

Well mild cheddar is pointless but YABU to slander all mild cheeses, as if there's nothing but cheddar in the world!

Brillat Savarin, St Marcellin, Ossau Iraty, Beaufort (summer), all mild and gorgeous

Also usual reminder to take your cheese out the fridge 30-60 minutes before eating to let the flavours warm up.

Tattletail · 08/08/2025 21:42

No I have not @TeacheeTeacherson , this is brand new information for me!!

@CircularMotionDementedThrustingGuy YABU. I love a strong cheddar!

Never met a cheese I didn’t like but mild Cheddar is just wrong.

Where does one find this all you can eat cheese buffet. Asking for a friend.

YourWinter · 08/08/2025 21:33

Cheddar always strength 4, mature, and maybe a round of Rockstar at Christmas.

Poobs2022 · 08/08/2025 21:31

Mild cheese is bleurgh. Makes me gag. I was brought up on tangy Canadian cheddar. I was devastated when everywhere stopped selling it after Brexit. I now have the Aldi no 6 or if I'm feeling extra fancy, the M&S Cornish cruncher. Black bomber for Xmas. Also very partial to the not so strong Boursin. YUM!

Shoxfordian · 08/08/2025 20:33

I love all cheese, and just leaving a lovely cheese and charcuterie board here which I enjoyed earlier with dh

That could be improved. One board the same size for cheese, one half sized for assorted fresh fruit, one half sized for assorted vegetables to always include chargrilled artichokes/marinaded mushrooms, a mug sized receptable for chilli pickled garlic and a sandcastle bucket for olives.

What do people mean that's not healthy? It's literally a Massive Salad.

HangingOver · 08/08/2025 21:29

tentative vegan contribution

Kinda Co make a sharp farmhouse cheddar out of cashews which is spectacular.

I used to eat cheddar on everything and this is the only one I've found which is any good 😁

Memberofstaff · 08/08/2025 21:27

Mild cheddar is awful. However, Edam has got a good flavour even though it's very mild.

BIossomtoes · 08/08/2025 21:25

The best cheddar in the world is called Rockstar, it bites back.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 08/08/2025 21:22

DH likes cathedral city (I'm embarrassed to buy it let alone eat it) Confused which to me tastes of nothing. I like a gutsy mature cheddar and has to be a flavour strength of 5 at the least. I've got a Belton Farm Silver Fox on the go at the moment, it's rather nice and has that divine crumbly texture. Yum yum.

Tortielady · 08/08/2025 21:21

I like mild cheese varieties eg, Cheshire, Wensleydale, young Lancashire, Mozzarella. They are all cheeses with a naturally delicate flavour. But I expect Cheddar to have some bite and am disappointed if it doesn't. That aside (and excluding monstrosities such as Dairylea etc) I love all cheese. White cheese, blue cheese, sheep's cheese, goat's cheese, Feta, Halloumi, sage Derby, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, Reiver cheese from Northumbria, Red Storm from Snowdonia Isle of Mull Cheddar, smoked cheese..I love it all. If there was a religion devoted to cheese, I'd sign up. 💛💛💛🧀

Mild cheese.

Looks like a bar of soap.

Wait, it IS a bar of soap! WTAF? 😆

Nonsense.

Fat is flavour!

Nonsense. You can have too much fat, and that lot of meat there looked 🤢
