Racist vigilantes on local FB page

I live in a small town with a military history. As such, we have had quite a few Afghan refugees settled here.

A few days ago, a woman posted to say that an Afghan refugee had been in the park and walking around watching her toddler. She turned away to feed her other child, and when she turned back, he was holding her toddler and walking off. She asked her sister who was with her to go and get the toddler back. Then, apparently, he said no to the sister several times and said he was taking the toddler home with him. Eventually, the toddler was returned.

Cue extensive outrage all over the Facebook page. Comments calling for riots and violence, comments locating the man involved, comments getting a few men together for a game of "human football"... Obviously people asked why she hadn't called the police and she said she had but they weren't interested.

Anyway, then there are posts of the man in different locations and people threatening to go after him.

Then, it turns out, the woman has partly lied and partly told half-truths about the whole things. Firstly, not a local Afghan refugee at all. Not local, on holiday. Not Afghan, police confirmed he's not Afghan but didn't say what he is. Not a refugee, here on holiday (we live in a touristy place). Police also confirmed it wasn't reported to them until the evening - and also that the report was made by a man. So, she didn't report to the police - just to Facebook.

It also turns out, the man was in the park with his own children (she made it sound like he was there alone) and that the toddler approached him, while the mum wasn't paying any attention, and asked to be picked up. And, of course, very strange that if a man were walking off with your toddler, you'd just ask him nicely to put them down...

Frankly, I feel really uncomfortable by this. This woman has blatantly lied and misled people to try and rile up a riot. I'm also scared by how many people were commenting incredibly racist things and calling for violence against (what turned out to be) an entirely innocent man. I'm really shocked, and I like where I live less now.

The police say that they’ve spoken to the man (who is not from Afghanistan). He’s on holiday in the area with his family. He was in the park with his family. No crimes were identified.

Have just read what the local councillor said about the incident on Facebook. He said that it was clear that the mother and aunt were obviously distressed and were right to report the incident. So sounds as though she did report it.

The police said they received one report. The dad said in comments on posts he was the one to report it, later in the evening. Andy Tree's post says the police were contacted "later". The mum initially said she called them at the time and only in comments on her post when people said "why haven't you called the police?".

Andy did said that they were "shaken" and right to report it. He also said that the child approached the man, that no crime had been committed and that he wasn't a local Afghan refugee. He also said he'd tried to speak to the family and they hadn't responded.

I don't think you'll ever find an independent politician say that anyone shouldn't have reported any incident. He'd get himself lynched!

Reporting is one thing. Focusing on nationality and ethnicity is quite another, and we all know what that thing is.

I don't really understand why people would not believe you. It is not the first time something like this has happened.

I just don't understand how she doesn't believe me when someone else from my town has come on here and commented about it!

Before it was outed, I offered to show the mods screenshots of the group. Now she's able to google it herself if she wanted to.

He'd visited the same park with his children several times, she described how he looked. As I said, it's a small town, so when went to the same park and other places nearby, people noticed him and took photos. I can't even be sure that the photos and posts saying "he's currently at X" were definitely him or the correct person.

He's staying nearby so maybe the police traced him on CCTV or doorbells? I don't know exactly. They just said they'd investigated, identified him and spoken to him. It was reported the evening of the same day, by the dad.

All I know about the situation is what was posted on Facebook.

She's made the point several times that this (proven, verified and easily searchable) story is made up. They keep taking down the troll-hunting, she just comes back.

Do you think OP is making this up? I googled and found a statement from Andy Tree on FB. There were lots of comments from residents too.

I'm so confused by this, if it was basically just a foreign man in the park that she completely misrepresented how were random people on facebook managing to trace him? And then if it wasn't reported to the police till much later how did the police find him and question him? It's all baffling to me.

Did @Dangermoo really say ‘attack anyone that looks brown, just in case’?

Pretty much, yes. At the very least she said it's OK/understandable for innocent brown people to get attacked by racist mobs, 'just in case'. It is truly appalling.

Muffsies · 08/08/2025 20:49

LakieLady · 08/08/2025 20:17

I saw that on the news earlier, and I damn near pissed myself laughing.

Where the fuck did the MP think they'd rowed from to rock up off the coast of Yarmouth? Did he really think they'd paddled their canoe all the way across the North Sea?

Even my racist, Reform-voting, Jaywick-dwelling brother isn't that thick.

The idiocy is dumbfounding. Sadly, people will swallow anything if it confirms their shitty biases or they think it'll increase their platform (see Trump and cat-eating migrants).

Givemeachaitealatte · 08/08/2025 20:37

Ah it's you. You are also all over the migrant threads claiming Afghans shouldn't be in the country. Dangermoo literally said 'better safe than sorry' on an article about an attack on an innocent refugee - then went onto say, 'im not advocating for violence' - not me sir, I'd never stir up racial hatred.

JamesMacGill · 08/08/2025 20:32

Givemeachaitealatte · 08/08/2025 20:29

You are on all of these migrant threads being not so subtly racist. I'm sure MN is going to be devasted you're leaving, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Can you say verbatim what she has said that is racist?

FromanEmpire · 08/08/2025 20:30

Did @Dangermoo really say ‘attack anyone that looks brown, just in case’?

She responded to an article about a brown person being attacked by vigilantes after incorrectly being accused of a crime by saying "better safe than sorry". I think most people would interpret that as saying to attack any brown person just in case.

You might be superior to racists but that only applies if they are actually racists. Otherwise..well..I'm going to wipe my feet on the way out of this thread.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 08/08/2025 20:12

That is exactly what you are advocating. We did nothing to the "Rotherham girls" and none of us failed to to protect them. It is not better to "be safe than sorry" if you are saying attack a totally innocent person based on their ethnicity because they MIGHT be guilty of something, possibly, one day if not now.

Possibly so. Aldershot, another military town, has many Nepalese residents, who have associations with the Ghurkha regiment. They seem ok there but I assume it was their military connections that made it seem like a reasonable place to be.

And the benefit of absolutely brilliant Nepalese food!

Serpentstooth · 08/08/2025 20:22

JamesMacGill · 08/08/2025 19:17

From my perspective, the fact it’s a military town means Afghan people who worked with British forces have been inclined to move there? I could be wrong.

You're absolutely spot on.

Look at this lot, being wound up by an actual MP who can't tell the difference between charity rowers and migrant vessels.

She's also made it clear about her thoughts on other forms of discrimination. I guess they are not as important, asvhaving ones virtue recognised. Please.

Oh aye. How did I "make it clear"? What are my thoughts? I agree that I've been clear but you seem to think that explicitly stating that I'm against racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia, islamophobia (etc, etc) is offensive...

Absolutely this

I have lived in a multicultural city since 2001 and there are a lot of second and third generation Asians, one of the largestest Jewish populations outside London, lots of Eastern/central Europeans who settled here prior to the Berlin wall coming down and those who came and enriched our communities when we were part of the EU. All of us mostly rub along together and they are our neighbours/friends/colleagues and we have more in common than differences.

The dog whistle politics that people take as gospel is quite terrifying really- as a nation we are going backwards. In my career I have worked with many asylum seeking families and individuals, and the vast majority are dignified people who just want to be part of our society (ie work, learn the language if they do not speak English already and give their children the best start and education). Many are highly qualified yet not allowed to work here. The children are often under a lot of pressure educationally to do well, so extra clubs and tuition etc. Pre Brexit (if any idiot voting for it had bothered to research) there were very clear statistics showing most immigrants living here contributed more than they took from our economy. This is in contrast to all those pensioners who shipped out to Spain etc and are now moaning about not having the same privileges since we voted to leave the biggest free trade zone in the world.

Our infrastructure is crumbling, no council houses/councils have no money and the nhs is in crisis, but immigration has not been the cause of this. Also, high crime rates and poor policing is not down to immigrants. I am certain some are not law abiding but do the white bristish thugs/rapists/shoplifters etc get reported in the national right wing press with inflammatory language?
