AIBU to think that 'patriarchy chicken' isn't the whole story?

Hear me out, as I reckon that this will be an unpopular opinion, but I am keen to know if my experience is just me or if others experience the same.

I hear a lot on this site about 'patriarchy chicken': simply put, the admirable notion that women deserve to take up space and not have to stand aside for men. Last week, I was in London, (I'm from a smaller UK city) I was STAGGERED by the utter lack of spatial awareness of women. I am a woman, for context: youngish (I'm 42 but look a lot younger) I found women knocked into me constantly and let their kids blunder into me and other people. I didn't have a problem with men at all. The other thing that I did notice was that all these women were white, and were all ages from young to late middle age (old women weren't an issue at all) I am mixed race. Before anyone thinks that I was the problem and was just out of my depth in London, that isn't the case. I am a trained dancer, I have a lot of spatial awareness, and I am used to London even though I haven't lived there for a while. I am starting to wonder if I need to play 'white supremacy chicken'!

Ok, that is at least consistent. I don't see where you answered it, you were too busy frothing about how victimised white women are.

Edited

Do you even realise how annoyingly patronising you come across?

I answered it on.page 2. Yes sexism against men exists.

You still haven't answered whether you think that you can be sexist against men. Why are you so averse to answering that?

Though I understand what you're saying, if someone treats someone like shit because of the colour of their skin, be that white, black, Asian etc, that's racism. It's really simple and completely wrong to make out like it's not as bad if it's towards white people

"Letting their kids"? I'm guessing all of these kids were products of immaculate conceptions. I wonder why a woman with children trying to navigate around the busiest city in the country might be more distracted than a man.

I would describe this as prejudice rather than racism.

Everyone can be on the receiving hand of prejudice because everyone has bias about ethnicity, religion, class, accent, looks….

Racism is much bigger issue, it’s a systemic discrimination only really felt by the minorities.

I don't agree with you that that is what the word means. I would say that racism is a subset of prejudice, like ageism or sexism and that systemic racism is a subset of racism (important and exists, but a more specfic form).

However, even if I did agree with you, racism against white people would - by your definition - exist in countries where white people are a minority and are discriminated against at a system level because of their skin colour.

So the OP's sweeping statement would still be incorrect.

I also think it's interesting that the OP's sweeping statement suggests a very UK or West-centred outlook that they may not even be aware of.

I do also wonder if it betrays a bit of disdain, at the very least, for white people; the idea of even considering that white people as a group may be wronged in the same way as another minority, anywhere ever (and therefore also be deserving of some consideration) seems to be viscerally rejected out of hand.

You would be wrong.
Racism can be a a personal level as well as a systemic level.
Lets not rewrite racism just to make ourselves feel better.

FrippEnos · 07/08/2025 17:03

Here is the response that you were expecting.
Having been well travelled nationally and internationally, I have found that all colours, both sexes and all genders that have people that bang/bump and barge into people of all colours, both sexes and all genders.
It can depend on where you are but being a fuckwit is not just something that affects white people.

Would genuinely love to know the answer to this seeing as racism against white people doesn't exist 🙄

I don't find patriarchal chicken is a thing.

There is "middle aged couple holding hands and we won't let go in case the world stops turning" chicken though.

And family groups who won't go single file unless you stop and force them to do so to get by you.

Edited - and people staring at their mobile phones instead of where they're going.

FWIW the prime bargers who expect everyone to make way for them on public paths, in my experience, tend to be parents. I actually don't notice it much from men though I don't deny the experience of those who do.

But it differs depending on who you are. I have a few gay friends - slight of build, visibly gay and some not white - and they all say they get this all the time from taller, bigger men. Sexuality is a factor too.

Humans are primates, and social signalling of hierarchy is A THING with primates.
Ask anyone who has studied chimps or baboons.

Most of the time is is not even consciously done. Hence the startled look of someone with a "higher status" when they barge into you because you didn't move.

I recall being on Oxford St in London with DH during a very busy shopping period. It was packed.
I naturally had the skill of weaving in and out of the crowd, darting into spaces that opened up. DH was soon many meters behind me and I had to back track to where he was. He was completely incapable of navigating the pavement like I did, because his whole life he had been walking in straight lines with other people automatically moving out of his way, without him even realising.

Racism against whites doesn't exist.

People are rude in London, particularly since Covid, it’s like everyone forgot their manners and social etiquette.

As a white middle age woman I can’t say I ever experienced what you describe but I do believe you when you say race might play a part.
Despite being diverse, xenophobia in London is real! I’ve experienced it as a white non British person. It’s all very low level and underhanded but real!

I was about to say you should have elbowed them back but then you’d be the aggressive one…. so no wise words only sympathy.

I want to know where everyone lives where diving out of the way is necessary and people are constantly bumping in to each other. It seems like bumper cars on foot! Is it really that difficult to walk down the street??

Living in London, tourists are annoying, cyclists on pavement worse, and people staring at their phones while walking is irritating. I don't really notice a massive difference in race or sex. As long as I'm walking confidently and keeping my eyes front, I avoid trouble!

My top tips for walking are: look where you're going, look for gaps, if someone is walking towards you then just move out of the way - you'll be in someone's way before long and they'll be grateful, and don't join in with stupid games! I've somehow managed to walk without being mowed down!

I hate to say it, but yes. I am. That's probably why men are nicer, as well. I'll probably find them being less nice as I age.

It changes, I'm in my 70s and young men are lovely to me. I always think they must love their granny so are nice to old ladies.

Londonmummy66 · 07/08/2025 16:05

Where in London exactly was this? Different area of London have very different dynamics - some are cultural too. If you were in some parts of south London you'd get hippy dippy mummies not bothering to teach young Ptolemy his manners and letting him career all over the place. Other parts it will be white men, other parts ethnic men. Other parts large family groups from a range of white and non white backgrounds who think it is acceptable to walk 5-7 abreast if the path will accomodate it and sod anyone coming in the opposite direction.

If it was Oxford Street then the white women were probably frazzled local workers trying to run around doing errands on their lunch break.

BTW the point of patriarchy chicken is not to barge into men but to not move out of their way as they walk towards you in the middle of the pavement. It has never been possible to play patriarchy chicken on Jermyn Street as the men tend to get out of your way - very easy game to play around the Inns of Court though.

SootherSue · 07/08/2025 16:03

I do this with royals. I call it coronation chicken.

amillionandone · 07/08/2025 16:00

I don't live in London, but I'm doubtful that the average white woman living there is choosing whether or not to go bumping into people on the basis of their race. And it's rather racist to suggest that they are.

TheignT · 07/08/2025 16:00

Devilsmommy · 07/08/2025 14:17

She literally said in her op that all the people barging into her were white women and that it's always white women who do it. From your post I can see you're one of those who thinks that racism against whites doesn't exist. Saying that all middle class white women have got entitled attitudes because of their race privilege is a fucking joke

But that's her experience. Do you think she should lie about it to spare your feelings?

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 07/08/2025 15:55

AliceMaforethought · 07/08/2025 14:19

Racism against whites doesn't exist.

I'm British mixed race and my parents' marriage was a scandal because of my dad marrying a white woman. (My family has progressed and changed since then, but the sentiment is still common.) Part of the worry was that they said she would never be accepted and their children wouldn't either. The fact you can just make a casual statement like that really speaks to your ignorance - or maybe your inability to see beyond yourself.

gannett · 07/08/2025 15:50

gannett · 07/08/2025 15:45

I notice it WAY more when I'm running (in skimpy running gear) and/or in the summer when I've worn crop tops, shorts etc. I hadn't really made the link before now.

I also wear sunglasses when I run, which for some reason makes people think you can't see them, and the amount of pursed lips, side-eyes and general cat's bum mouths I see is... interesting. (I am a thoughtful runner who keeps out of people's way etc!) Almost always from older women. Younger women give me a solidarity nod if they acknowledge me at all, younger men sometimes the same. Older men, unfortunately sunglasses mean they think I can't see them ogling, but whatever.

I worked in a school where white staff (as there are no longer any white pupils at all, which in itself is telling) are very much in the minority.

There was a time when the pupils took to stepping on their feet when they were on duty, knocking into them on the corridor and pushing past them at their classroom doors.

That is absolutely disgusting!!

Mimbl · 07/08/2025 15:46

Smilesinthesunshine · 07/08/2025 15:37

Racism to white people definitely does exist! I made the mistake of letting my daughter go to a grammar school that was quite multicultural. The blacks and Asians were so badly racist to the white girls. It was rather horrifying.
