To think Corbyn despises Britain?

When I was a bit more ‘sixth form politics’ I used to really like Jeremy Corbyn, thought he was a genuine alternative to fatcats, warmongers and austerity enthusiasts.

Now I’ve grown up a little but still follow him on social media. I’ve become increasingly concerned about his almost obsessive coverage of Gaza, to the exclusion of almost everything else that affects Britain. He posts repeatedly commemorating virtually every event where he perceives Britain to have been an oppressor, while rarely acknowledging the reverse.

Today it’s Hiroshima, and while I don’t think anyone is going to delight in the deaths of civilians regardless of whether they were an ally or not, it just feels at this stage that he actively dislikes Britain and exclusively sympathises with anyone who was/is against us. As usual he is very clear in naming America as the nuke dropping aggressor, yet on 7/7 his post only referenced ‘bombings’ and how ‘all faiths came together’. No mention of the aggressors there, or even that it was an act of terrorism.

I think he has gone far beyond simply viewing things through a global, objective lens and the thought of him becoming PM (unlikely but you never know) brings me out in a cold sweat.

I don't think Corbyn hates Britain. He hates the USA which (for all its flaws, particularly the underclass) is the world's great power and leader in technology. He can't forgive the USA for achieving this status via capitalism because he believes that socialism is inevitable (an old Militant Labour slogan), even though it has never worked properly anywhere it's been tried.

Rather than change his mind, he has dedicated his life to proving that the USA is the bad guy and that their opponents such as Iran, Russia and Hamas are misunderstood. He was allowed to stay in Labour for decades as an irrelevance, until the party membership succumbed to the sentimental view that they had lost in 2015 because they weren't radical enough. That wasn't the case, it was because Cameron did OK in his first term - I think we can say that now after the last ten years of turmoil - and incumbent PMs don't get ejected unless they are struggling.

His leadership of Labour ultimately reduced them to their worst result for 80 years. "Oh, Jeremy Corbyn!" was a bit of fun at a music festival, not a political realignment. And the OP is right in that he is just a classic protest politician. So why worry about him?

PandoraSocks · 07/08/2025 23:00

It is getting a bit chilly at night now. Rioters don't like getting cold.

They might have won the battle, but they certainly haven’t won the war. The war is coming

It feels like ‘something’ is coming. I think last summer’s rioting will pale in comparison to whatever that something is - we now have regular protests in market towns and suburbs, I have never ever seen this before. The momentum just doesn’t seem to be fading off in the way it usually does.

I'm fascinated to hear how "spoke about the Hiroshima bombing" and "opposes the Gaza genocide" equate to hating Britain.

Does loving Britain have to exclude those things?

Sometimes posters on here write something so clearly disingenuous, you know it’s not worth explaining yourself - they already know, they just want to frame it through an utterly nonsensical lens.

Untrue about the allotments. Even the National Allotment Society says so.

Same.

Apparently Labour are taking away allotments and Jezza has one, so I think that shows a pro-UK sentiment in him and an anti-UK sentiment in the government that means I am conflicted, as usual. This government has a terrible fear of growing food which I find quite scary though.

Editor’s Comment: Are councils selling off allotments? | LocalGov

Jeremy Corbyn warns of a government-backed threat to UK allotments—but are fears justified?

I have no intention of risking my life for Britain. I wouldn’t lift a finger to defend a country that hates itself, is ashamed of its past and has completely lost its identity. The left have won. They’ve got what they wanted. They’ve used mass immigration to impose a new identity on us, and they’ve used the publishing industry to demonise our national heroes and ridicule our history. Just talk a stroll around the history section of Waterstones. It might as well be re-named the ‘how Britain ruined the world’ section. I’ve long since given up on Radio 4. The final straw was a programme on Jane Austen. Within five minutes the guests were talking about sugar plantations, and that was it, they spent the rest of the programme discussing colonialism and slavery. The left have created a new country with a new identity, and THEY can go and defend it. Owen Jones can go fight. In fact, all those smug, sneering Oxbridge liberals can go. Good luck when you’ve got Owen Jones and Stewart Lee and Louis Theroux as the first line of defence.😀

It’s bloody marvellous this lunatic is creating a new party, creates the perfect path for left wing decimation

'Apparently he's a good constituency MP'

He's a good enough MP for some of his constituents, but not for those who do not meet his cookie-cutter model of political worthiness, e.g. white middle classes from whence he came.

His election team in 2024 fought a particularly dirty campaign to discredit the official Labour Party campaign. Left a sour taste.

Corbyn is on his last lap in Islington. He may or may not be voted in again as an independent.

Why wouldn't you?

If Russia invade, say Poland and then Finland, would you be willing to step up and help defend these countries or would you be happy under another country's rule.

Agree. I supported him first time round. I was an idiot - or, being kinder to myself, hadn't yet realised what a self-worshipping liability he is.

Anyway, 'his' Labour chucked me out for believing women are female. I was already on my way out due to his anti-EU sentiment, they just sped up what was a huge decision for me at the time.

Same.

I don't disagree but if Thatcher was having talks with the IRA, then he cannot he criticised for doing the same.

Of course he can. He had no authority, no power, no function and no real commitment to the peace process. His talking to the IRA achieved absolutely nothing.

Obviously people in both Tory and Labour governments were involved n negotiation to being about peace in Northern Ireland. Corbyn nothing constructive to further peace. He was completely marginal.

There is nothing wrong with being a pacifist. Jeremy Corbyn has always been on the right side of history.

A pacifist who refuses to denounce fundamentalist terrorism? Doesn't sound very pacifistic

MyNameIsX · 07/08/2025 20:28

Alexandra2001 · 07/08/2025 14:05

He would need funding, organisation and people to put up candidates in all of England's constituencies.

That wont happen, i'm sorry to have rained on your parade.

The LDs and the Greens will be Labours biggest problem with splitting of the left of centre vote.

Just as Reform has split the right wing vote but if you re right, Corbyn will get more votes than the Tories at the next GE !!!

Margarite Thatcher authorised high level talks with the IRA in the 80s, which led to the GFA... which ended the violence.

I don't recall her being vilified for that.

or inviting ex ira prisoners to the HOP just weeks after the Brighton Bombing

that was utterly disgraceful I think people forget (regardless of how you feel about the ira and the thatcher led government of the time) this was an attack on our democracy

Nothing, but what does it suggest when somebody who wants to lead the country commemorates every event where lives were lost on the opposing side with passion, while ignoring or writing something perfunctory about every attack Britain has endured?

It speaks for itself.

I think you’re the only one seeing it that way.

Also the difference in death toll probably played a part in the different weight given.

A quick Google shows approx 150,000 and 246,0000 civilian were killed in the bombings which is an astronomical number.
