Motorhome parked on the street

Curious if people know if there's anything we can do about this or just have to live with it. Neighbour across the road seems to have acquired a motorhome, and it's parked on the street. Tbh we'd been hoping it was a temporary thing, eg that he perhaps he had had it in storage and was going away, but it's not shifted in two weeks so I'm guessing not. The motorhome is enormous. I'm not very good at guessing size, but it has six wheels and it's really tall. Its longer than the width of the house it's parked outside.

Our street is old terrace houses, and it's narrow so there's only parking on one side, parking is tight at the best of times. It's always a bit annoying when there's extra vehicles added to the mix, but buying a vehicle this size just seems bonkers when there's little parking. Tbh I'm amazed he even got it on the street, as it's tight T junctions at each end, the bin lorries can't always make it!

I had a look online and can't see anything about restrictions for parking, only that vehicles can't be slept in. I thought local restrictions on parking large vehicles was a common thing, but seems maybe it's covenants on newer estates? Is it something we're just going to have to get used to?

Im trying not to be 'that' neighbour, but it doesn't help that the person who has bought this isnt someone we particularly like - they're quite anti social, eg they'll store junk outside the house, park their car where someone's tried to reserve a spot for a skip delivery, that sort of thing. And this thing is particularly ugly! It looks quite old and not in the best condition. I feel sorry for the neighbour whose house it's directly outside!

@Northernladdette yes, it's only me who is annoyed. The other neighbours love it when they can't park on the street, carrying shopping back and forth is great for getting steps in.

@Unilaterallyinsane I didn't know that about CLS sites. My friends must be really picky about where they go I guess!

I’ve just had a look and the Caravan and Motorhome Club have 2,100 CL sites and the Camping and Caravan Club have 300+ CS sites. These CS sites have pitches for five motorhomes or caravans and 10 camping pitches.

To be fair stanedge has always had problems with parking over the summer as we have had to change climbing plans before now if you don’t get up early / it’s perhaps getting worse - haven’t been there for a few years

what is it with BBQs - on peat for Pete’s sake / utterly irresponsible

sometimes I want a full uk fingerprint database so the culprits can be easily caught

It’s horrendous now. Like a theme park. It’s heaving all the time.

Barbecues half way up the edge, camper vans all over the roads and beyond.

@Unilaterallyinsane I didn't explain that very well, I meant few sites as in places that aren't big camping and caravan parks. In Europe there are more places that motorhomes can park up, eg car parks that have basic facilities. It's easier to just drive and stop where you fancy.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of small sites that accept motorhomes. These are run by the owners but are part of either the Caravan and Motorhome Club and the Camping and Caravan Club. The Caravan and Motorhome Club have what they call CLs Certificated Locations, which only allow five pitches. These are often on farms and they offer peace and solitude.

@Titasaducksarse this is the other aspect, I genuinely don't understand why people use motorhomes in the UK - I get the idea of wanting the freedom, but as you say there are very few sites and those with facilities require advanced booking so there's no real spontaneity. Plus weather wise theres less opportunity to use them. If you're traveling in the US or Europe the experience would be much nicer!

Here its a PITA for the neighbours, if there was an obvious benefit to said neighbour I'd understand but I really don't know what that would be. It's far too big for one person. It must cost a fortune in fuel and I don't think he's particularly flush. He can be a bit of a hoarder and I can't help but think he's been offered a deal on it and hasn't got a plan yet.

If he wants a motor home that’s his choice. However, if he’s annoying his neighbours (is it only you?) then that’s another matter. On my council website you can report vehicles for causing an obstruction. I assume you’ve checked its taxed?

childofthe607080s · 07/08/2025 09:56

I think this whole discussion shows that consideration for others and the environment is what’s seriously lacking and I don’t know how to fix that as so many people seem so selfish

I wouldn't lobby for residents parking, the schemes always end up costing residents money and I don't think it would be popular. Plus realistically the parking difficulties are mainly due to residents cars - that's always going to be the case when there's only space for on average, one car per house. Extra cars would be schools and shoppers and they need somewhere to go too.
I just think if you live in a densely populated area you should have a bit of consideration for others, that's all. And for those who will say it's a price issue, our houses don't have parking because they were built before cars existed. There are more modern homes within 20mins walk that have garages and driveways and are a similar price (for an equivalent bed house)

Ah that's annoying! I haven't actually checked though I'd feel a bit keen going down that route. It's a possibility, same neighbour has previously left broken down cars on the street and I remember at least one being clamped because it wasn't taxed I think (can't remember exactly but it had big stickers on it referring to the clamp)

It takes 5 seconds to check tax and MOT status by putting the reg in here: Enter the registration number of the vehicle - Check if a vehicle is taxed and has an MOT - GOV.UK

Not sure about insurance, but if it hasn't got either of the above you could probably anonymously report it.

An yes I have seen the trouble in the Peak District - campers all along the mam tor road and a cheap beautiful campsite within easy walking distance

but I was on that beautiful campsite and would prefer not to be tarred with the idiocy of others!

mind you - again it’s not just campers. Was in north wales ( rock climbing so plenty of time to watch) and people just parked anywhere - my heart was in my mouth as one idiot after parking at the end of a long string of cars on a blind bend then opened her door and let the toddler out on the road whilst she faffed with a buggy - how the oncoming traffic missed the child I just don’t know. I was close to sobbing it was so awful and dangerous. I suspect the whole area was clearway so ….

so then you have cars reversing for miles on a major A road because of all the parked cars.

and don’t talk to me about campers who park at a popular spot and set up camp taking up masses of car parking spaces ( that’s for more balance ! )

it’s twats of any persuasion

Fair enough!

But they’re all over Burbage Edge and Stannedge to. All along the roadside parked on soft land. Leaving wheel marks and barbecue crap.

smooththecat · 07/08/2025 09:48

Urgh, I was the person with the giant motorhome parked right outside my window. I’d only just bought my place and it wasn’t there when I looked round. It stayed for months. Opening the blinds, I felt like I was in the M5 lorry park, especially because next door, who own it, parked another massive van on their drive so two sides of my outlook was ‘side of van’. Because they had both parked significantly onto the pavement, leaving just a narrow gap for pedestrians to squeeze through, I reported it. Nothing happened. So, when they went on holiday I went and bought a car and parked it outside my house, even though I have a parking space at the back. Some people are just oblivious or inconsiderate. If you have to park something offensive, park it outside your own window.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 07/08/2025 09:47

Considering we've got one that seems to be using our work office carpark on a semi-permanent basis that we've not had any joy getting shifted for months - you're going to have to just learn to ignore it OP.

Road opposite our office is permit parking and all the residents have taken to using our work carpark to avoid having to buy extra permits and it's a pain in the butt no one seems to be bothered to resolve.

Northernladdette · 07/08/2025 09:43

Just hope it gets nicked 🙂

I hope not, because unless they're an excellent driver, I wouldn't fancy their chances of getting it off the street! It's a 90 degree T junction with parked cars at each end!

i would ask because there are lots of places where the van can be stored when not in use

sometimes you don’t see the problem until it’s pointed out to you

I would in normal circumstances but there’s a complicated situation going on next door (which hopefully will resolve in time and he will leave) , I don’t think it would be well received plus the guy is a bit intimidating so decided having thought about it to leave well alone.

Also it’s his main vehicle though he doesn’t use it for weeks on end. It’s currently parked over the road as we parked outside when he moved it last and if push comes to shove it is going to give me the push I probably need to replace our second car when I can afford it.

It isn't a short term solution, but would people on the street be willing to lobby councillors for residents parking restrictions? The council can introduce any bye-laws they want (within reason) including numbers and sizes of vehicles.

You don't lobby for parking restrictions. You need a certain (high) percentage of residents to agree to them via a signed form and then the residents need to pay the costs for the advertising etc... That was the case in Hampshire anyway. With restrictions on budgets LAs can no longer afford to do this as a freebie. In my experience it was very difficult to rally agreement from residents even where there was a clear need for it, if there is appetite councillors can be really helpful though

Edited to add - rent so them getting a permit for the van though!

Northernladdette · 07/08/2025 09:43

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 09:42

@childofthe607080s there aren't many laybys near here, I know what you mean as near our inlaws in the south there are lots of A roads with laybys but that's not the case here. The lorries have the truck stops on the motorways. The A roads and B roads are mainly single lanes without laybys.
Our nearest camping spots would be Derbyshire and North Wales, and yes the council have got a lot stricter about parking in both areas, hence my assumption that realistically you would need to book sites to travel, though appreciate people might have their ways.

One of the reasons the councils are strict is not just about obstruction but the verges being too soft for vehicles, I imagine with a vehicle that's heavier than most there would be a real risk of getting stuck!

There are literally hundreds of sites you can park on with a motorhome in the UK. A motorhome is self contained with a tank for fresh water, a tank for waste water and a cassette toilet. Many also have solar panels on the roof. Motorhomes are just as common on campsites now as caravans.

In terms of facilities, you need an elsan point for emptying the loo and a fresh water tap. Many of the farm sites actively encourage motorhomes to empty their waste water into their hedgerows.

I completely understand why you don’t want a motorhome parked on your street.

Hibernatingtilspring · 07/08/2025 09:33

@tequilam0ckingbird sorry if I wasn't clear, six spaces in total - the neighbour has a long wheelbase van, an estate and the motorhome. He lives alone, never seen any family visiting, so I'm not really sure why he would need so many big vehicles (obviously a van is different, I'm not sure what he does but I assume it's for work)

I spent a good few hours researching this recently as my neighbour has been parking his motor home outside my drive and it means I exit the drive without being able to see the road and even creeping forward really slowly means I have been close to hitting cars twice. We are fairly near the corner of the road and they come round slowly but start increasing their speed just by us.

My conclusion was unless you are somewhere which had local bylaws in place then there isn’t anything you can do.

You can sleep in many lay-bys legally - that’s what lorry drivers do all the time

yiu can’t set up camp ( encampment is illegal) -that means it’s illegal to have anything outside the vehicle for example and it’s illegal to have no one capable of driving the vehicle ( so no boozing )

littering is illegal for everyone

i was at a lovely local beauty spot and I noted that the campers and van people took all their rubbish but the day visitors left huge piles by the bins - but the campers got blamed - fascinating insights into human mentality -twats everywhere. I had watched people leaving the rubbish and driving off ( I should get a life really )

edit to add I didn’t see who left the human poo but it was a single dump not the emptying of a camper cassette so I suspect it was a day tripper

not saying that there isn’t crap camper behaviour , just be careful about making assumptions and generalisations because they can be very wrong

Edited

I’m not making generalisations

The local community are sick of it, There’s human shit everywhere. Burnt out campfires

And there aren’t any lay-bys. They all park on her road or on the grass.

The Park itself has made many pleas about the shit and campfires. They take no notice.

How does it affect me? Because it's more likely that I have to park on another street because one neighbour - who lives alone- is now taking up the equivalent of six parking spaces. And because if anyone double parks, which happens, there's less chance of our bins being collected. And the residents who do double park, if they're not able/willing to park on another road, can only do so if they park right up on the pavement meaning that pedestrians have to walk in the road.

Though you could have known that if you'd been bothered to read my posts instead of coming here just to make a snide comment. Feel better now do you?

I agree with your OP, I don't think you should be able to permanently park massive vehicles on any road..

but 6 spaces???? I've not seen any MH that takes up that much space. My mum has a MH and it's maybe 1.5 spaces.
