To be furious that my neighbour ‘borrowed’ my garden furniture for her BBQ?

Went away for the weekend, came back Monday afternoon to find our patio table, four chairs, and parasol in next door’s garden.

Turns out she’d had a BBQ on Sunday and “thought we wouldn’t mind” if she borrowed them. Was “going to return it”. Only I found out because by Monday evening it was still all sat there and I saw her teenage son and his mates hanging out on my furniture.

No note. No text. Just helped herself. I wouldn’t even have known if I hadn’t looked over the fence.

I’m honestly livid. It’s not a small thing to borrow and she didn’t even ask. What if it had got damaged? Or gone missing?

AIBU to think this is beyond cheeky and actually borderline theft?

No update then? Surprise surprise

CalicoCatMum · 06/08/2025 21:50

My neighbour is one of my best mates and we wouldn't take anything from each other's garden without asking first (even though neither of us would mind and we have a key to each other's houses for emergencies/dog letting out/cat feeding etc). Dropping you a text to ask wouldn't have taken 2 mins... absolute CF!!

legolegoeverywhereandnotadroptodrink · 06/08/2025 20:55

What’s the reason they didn’t text you to ask?

GentleJadeOP · 06/08/2025 20:48

Why do people post asking questions and get loads of replies and never update the thread?

Tortycatlover · 06/08/2025 20:05

i’m wondering if she’s done this before OP, and previously managed to return it before you got back.

Kelsey3 · 06/08/2025 19:43

If you don’t mind and trust them not to damage things I’d say to them if you ever want to borrow anything again to please ask, either in person or via a text if I’m away as I nearly reported it as a theft. Luckily just before calling I glanced over and saw everything in your garden.
We all get on well in our neighbourhood but none of us would borrow things/use someone’s drive for extra parking etc if they’re away without asking first. It’s just common courtesy!

Edamcheese · 06/08/2025 19:27

What a bloody liberty. I was bought up to ask first before taking any that doesn’t belong to you. Whether you are good friends or even relatives on real good terms it doesn’t give you the right to assume that you can take or borrow stuff from people.Surely she could of text you first if she was desperate for needing more garden furniture. Don’t fall out about it as that will make life awkward but just tell that you are not amused. Just lock it away or anything else that she could take next time you’re away. Cheeky buggers.

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2025 18:43

We have a holiday house, as is the one next door. We turned up one day to find our patio furniture in their garden and lots of cutlery and glasses and plates missing. The owners had friends who rented our place and took all our belongings next door for a bbq and left them there! Good job we arrived and not guests with no plates or cutlery and wine glasses! We were very unhappy and management company went in to retrieve everything.

My advice - get a camera for your garden.

Straycats · 06/08/2025 18:41

Have you got the furniture back yet? Please do not bring it back yourself.

Kinglynn · 06/08/2025 18:35

report it stolen. Did that on a neighbour that kept ‘borrowing’ my son’s patio chairs from my garden. When the police turned up to their house it frightened the hell out of them. He was a school teacher and a police report would cause him so much trouble. Stopped immediately

It was cheeky of them, but had they cleaned it and put it back and explained to me I would have been fine about it. But for it still to be there really not on.

This isn’t okay. I’d just take them back and next time I saw them ask them not to do it again as you’ll be needing them for your own events over the summer.

llamaking · 06/08/2025 09:16

the problem is whatever you do you still have to live next to them and this could just be a catalyst to worst behaviour.

its wrong yes, your neighbours are absolute cheeky shits

but how you handle it could mean future years of grief.

id consider moving 😂

thankfully i've gotten on with all my neighbours and most have become friends, so we all borrow each others stuff regularly, and often a BBQ would mean we all would be invited anyway so 'would bring a chair' and some food etc.

but taking your furniture without asking is some crazy next level stuff.

Dolphinosep0tatoes · 05/08/2025 22:34

Hardly. They broke into the ops garden and took their property without permission = theft. The fact that they hoped not to be caught is neither here nor there.

I think you will find that for it to be theft there has to be 'intent to permanently deprive"

Whenever an Op starts a dramatic CF, posts once and then scarpers… safe to assume, it’s all nonsense

Always…

everythingthelighttouches · 06/08/2025 08:53

I can’t fathom this at all.

We’re really good friends with neighbors on both sides. Similar aged kids, who are in and out of eachother’s houses. We regularly have the adults round for bbqs etc.

We have lent eachother variously dining chairs, tables, hoovers, garden furniture, used eachother’s washing machines. All sorts.

Never in a million years would any of us take the other’s garden furniture before asking.

And I can only assume you and your neighbors don’t have eachother’s numbers because otherwise how on Earth did they not message you to ask permission?

PollyBell · 06/08/2025 08:18

Well we cant answer so have you spoken to them directly?

CalicoPusscat · 06/08/2025 07:10

I have to admit that because I'm nosy I would just like to know neighbour brought the furniture back around!

AnotherGreyMorning · 06/08/2025 06:27

Even If it isn’t damaged or taken permanently, she trespassed and stole your furniture.

Awaywiththegnomes · 06/08/2025 06:07

Flyswats · 05/08/2025 22:19

Actually I'm disabled and dying of a chronic disease. I have not "been on holiday" for more than a decade and can't really fathom people getting bent out of shape over such minor infractions. It strikes me as mundane, sad and missing out in life. Also deeply dull.

So anyone in RL have a moan to you about anything less than a serious illness or starvation…. You roll your eyes and shake your head.

Flyswats · 05/08/2025 22:13

run a search on my user name if you like

Can’t be arsed

but I’ll presume on your daft post on this thread (I mean seriously… asking if anyone died 😆) that you are precisely the kind to refer to famine victims if anyone mentions feeling upset about not being able to afford a holiday

MoneyTaIks · 06/08/2025 03:19

Unless you're good friends then this is cheeky af.

IJWMM · 06/08/2025 00:03

I don’t get the “wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t looked over the fence” comment.

How could you not notice just by looking at your own garden (and seeing what was missing).

Not expecting a rational answer, given there are no replies so far!

I once thought that there was something wrong with my front garden, but couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Someone had stolen a very large, fully planted and in bloom planter.

Francestein · 06/08/2025 01:07

How did you get it back?
