To think it's fine for men to drink whilst their partner is pregnant?

I honestly don't know if iabu... happy to take opinions! Friend invited a group of us for dinner- all women invited are pregnant and at various stages of pregnancy. When we arrived DH took some beers along for the men and he was told he couldn't drink them because in friends opinion, if she can't drink whilst pregnant he shouldn't either. In inwardly thought this was nuts- I would never tell DH ( within reason - nobody is approaching their due date or anything and her older dd was home who drives if there was an emergency ) he couldn't drink whilst I can't! Haven't discussed this with the other guests since as I don't want to make a big deal of it but I have been thinking about it! Very unsure of what the consensus would be but aibu?

Yabu men shouldn't drink whilst their wives are pregnant if the wives can't- in it together and all that

Yanbu they're not growing a baby so drinking alcohol shouldn't be banned for them

I would say once the due date approaches, the partners should stop drinking so they can get the mother to be safely to the hospital. Maybe at 38 weeks or so.

I'm on the fence.

I had no issue with my ex drinking while I was pregnant up until near the end when I needed to know he could drive us to hospital if I went into early labour. Earlier than that it would never have occurred to me to be annoyed at him drinking. I also wouldn't mind if they wanted to stay out later drinking and I'd just leave them to it and go home to bed when I got tired.

However, I'm also not much of a drinker anyway and I know some women do really miss drinking alcohol while pregnant and if that's the case I can see why they'd not want to be around others who are drinking. I also have a really low tolerance for dealing with very drunk people while sober as let's be honest, they're often melts, plus I deal with it enough in my job. So if my husband has a pattern of getting absolutely hammered, then tbh no I wouldn't really want to deal with that pregnant. I also wouldn't want to be cleaning up sick/ trying to lift him into bed etc while pregnant or risking him falling into me.

But I think a few drinks being reasonably sensible - no problem and suggesting otherwise is a bit controlling.

The party guests were being silly and precious. Are they the sort of people who indulge their partners with the "we are pregnant" ninsense?

No issue with DH having a few drinks when I was pregnant. He didn't drink from about week 37 onwards just in case we had to make a hospital trip but otherwise no issue.

What works for some doesn’t work for others.
As long as he is OK with it then let them be.

I cut out the booze from about the 6 month mark, though my wife would likely have put the rule in place not long after.
Heck I did my best friends stag do stone cold sober.

Missing a few beers isn’t the end of the world, I know I’ve sunk enough since then to make up for lost time!

But why?

DiscoBob · 04/08/2025 20:20

It's personal. Anyone can drink or not drink for whatever reasons. They're not stopping you from doing so. Just offer the non drinkers a soft drink.

It's no big deal. Surely in many groups people sometimes don't drink.

It doesn't really matter whether their partner is pregnant or not. In fact some pregnant women do drink lightly on social occasions and that's ok too.

The male host is probably one of those who says ‘WE are pregnant’. Cringe.

If as hosts they wanted an alcohol free evening, they should have made that clear in the invitation. Male host was ridiculous. Those who wanted alcohol could have said something but host made that awkward.

It’s different when prospective fathers get pissed and behave like idiots, with little thought or care for their pregnant partners.

Lmfao yes he does say that

Not getting totally bladdered - probably. Not going out and ending up over the drink drive limit when you're in the "when's baby coming?" phase. - fair enough. Not drinking a drop for the whole pregnancy - no, massively OTT.

Hmm makes me wonder if they were both just saying this is their rule to prevent other guests getting laddered maybe? I honestly can't see that friend would usually be funny about him having a couple of beers of an evening just the two of them, especially now I've read enough responses to know it's not a thing I've just missed a memo for!

It’s a bit odd imo. Wise not to have a drink as the due date approaches ( dh had to take me to hospital in the middle of the night) but before that I see no reason for partners to abstain.

HeddaGarbled · 04/08/2025 20:16

I think it’s OK, but a bit of sensitivity wouldn’t go amiss. Turning up with a load of beers to a do for a load of pregnant women wasn’t kind, IMO.

The thing is, her dh was fully on board with the idea and he's not usually the sort to get told what to do so that's why I thought maybe it is normal and I'm the weird one! Out of our friends I wouldn't have them down as a couple where the Mrs wears the trousers so to speak. I'm just very mystified😂

I’m at the end of my third pregnancy, I think that’s a crazy attitude to have.
A drink or two in the evening is fine.
I wouldn’t appreciate it if DH went on a night out, and came rolling in at 5am drunk off his face, barely being able to walk/being sick etc and then complaining the next day of a hangover from hell; but a couple of drinks now and then is fine by me.

fthisfthatfeverything · 04/08/2025 20:15

hasn’t he landed a goodun 🙄
tell him to throw her back 😆

Hadn't even thought of that! We weren't the only pregnant couple to bring drink that was not allowed to be open hahaha

Next time host at your house so you can open whatever you like. If it wasn’t at someone else’s home I would have said sod it and opened it anyway to be honest

LazySunbedDays · 04/08/2025 20:12

It doesn’t bode well for their future if she is already controlling what he can and can’t do.
My DH had surgery this week, can’t drive, walk the dog, have a drink etc for a few weeks…. Did it stop me going out to a gig at the weekend and have a few beers just because he can’t? Absolutely not… and he would be mortified if I sat by his side for the whole time not doing anything just because he can’t

InMyHealthyEra · 04/08/2025 20:10

That’s ridiculous, is he also not allowed sushi or soft cheeses?

Beyoungbefoolishbegappy · 04/08/2025 20:09

ohsososo · 04/08/2025 20:07

So should men also not eat shellfish or unpasteurised cheese?
Christ alive some people are mental.

Mushroo · 04/08/2025 20:07

So weird. I’ve jokingly told DH he can’t have Provence Rosé as that is my favourite, but of course he can have the odd drink.

I often sniff his red wine in jealously 😂

FlyRedRobin · 04/08/2025 20:02

I'm pregnant and I think DH needs more drink than ever to deal with my hormones 😬

HAHA

Very controlling of your friends. Who are they to tell your dh whether or not he should drink whilst you're pregnant. These types on controlling people are so tiresome.

youalright · 04/08/2025 20:05

Absolutely ridiculous, selfish, immature and controlling.
