Ways middle aged men have told us off this week

I've got 2 today and it's not even midday yet
I swim every day at 6am . There's normally about 6 of us, today I had the pool all to myself. I swam in one of the lanes as i am working on staying straight during certain strokes. After about 20 minutes a man got in the pool. I've seen him before, he always goes in the unlaned bit and does physio walking up and down.
Today he came over to the lane and said I shouldn't be in there as its the fast lane and I wasn't fast. I thought he was joking so I laughed. He then said he wasn't joking and I needed to move. Of course I told him not to be ridiculous, no one else was in here and if someone fast wanted it, I'd move. He called me a silly batch.
Then just now in tescos, I was in the pasta aisle and a man picked up a jar of pasta sauce and said "is this any good" I said I wasn't sure sorry, I normally just get the passata and put onion and garlic in it. He sort of mocked me and said "ooh good cook are you" I said yes, I'm OK and I enjoy it too. He then said "well at least I can parallel park you silly cow"
Now I know I just encountered 2 nutters (maybe a third is on the way) but I'm a bit cheeky and a cow before lunch today despite just going for a swim and buying cheaper pasta ingredients. 🤣🤣

Man in Morrisons car park, junction to turn onto feeder road. No indicators, right in the middle of the road so position no guide. I said to no one in particular about no indication and he started effing and blinding, bitch, etc, etc, and he had a young woman sat next to him in the car. Next time I'll say to the passenger that if he's like that with a complete stranger I'd be looking to leave as I bet it's worse at home.

Doncarlos · 04/08/2025 11:14

Is this the sort of thing other women experience on a regular basis? Because I honestly can't recall any occasion where I've had an interaction with an unknown male like that.

Whistlingformysupper · 04/08/2025 11:13

Reminder to everyone that this sort of behaviour should be met with the following tart response, said loudly:
'Excuse me? Did you mean to be so Rude?!'

This kind of thing has not happened to me but can well believe it happens to others. Twats! I would have reported the guy in the pool.

I took my puppy to puppy training classes. The instructor was an ex policeman. My dog didn't co-operate at all and spent the time pulling to get to the other dogs. The instructor came over to me yanked my dog by the collar, forced her to sit by pressing on her back and told me it was all my fault because I was giving up and letting her get away with it and being too soft. My dog was 8 months old at the time! My DH took her the following week and she behaved exactly the same. The instructor never said a word to him. Misogyny at its finest Angry

The first one, fair enough he was a twat. But the second one, why wouldn’t you just say “I don’t know, I’ve never tried it” instead of going into detail about your own cooking, which wasn’t what he was asking?

I think OP was doing the classical female thing of trying to be helpful by giving more information.

Not sure where you live OP, but your story has had more negative and abusive interactions with men and other people than I have had in the last 5 years.

Not sure if its a man thing or a you thing, but then again we only have your side of the story. 🤔

Edited

Nope. Not up for this kind of gaslighting thanks.
Totally true, my side of the story is me going about my business as stated.

Last week some random bloke told me off for not having my coat with me. On a sunny July day.
I’m mid 50s. I think I can make my own coat based decisions thanks.

I don't know if I've ever encountered something like that. I've certainly never had blokes swear at me for no reason! What did you say back to the man OP? I would like to think if someone called me a bitch in a public pool I'd get right out and find someone that could get him booted! Totally unacceptable. I've had one bloke kicked out of a sauna as he made an unacceptable sexual comment. You don't have to put up with it.

Try being a cyclist riding home from work - blokes swearing at you is almost a daily occurrence unfortunately!

This actually clears up a question I had about what drivers who do this can possibly be thinking of!

I've had similar encounters where the man in question makes exasperated gestures as though he thinks I should have waited for him despite the hazards being entirely on his side. I had put it down to sheer entitlement but now I know they may just actually not be bright enough to understand basic rules of the road!

I live on a steep hill, for some reason there seems to be some convention that people park on the left as you are going up the hill. There seems to be a conflict of giving way if the obstruction is your side and giving way to the vehicle going up the hill. Everyone seems to swap which rule applies depending on if they are going up or down the hill.

Personally I think life's too short so if they think they have priority I just relax for the seconds it takes to let them go. With a school at the top of the hill it's only really an issue at school times. I always assume parents are dashing for work or whatever so as I'm retired I don't fret.l

Beamur · 04/08/2025 11:05

This doesn't happen to me much. I don't think I engage 😄 plus I'm a bit deaf so don't hear the little comments designed to catch your attention.
Men probably think I'm rude and standoffish. They're probably right.
Such twattish behaviour isn't it? Theirs, not mine 😁

CautiousLurker01 · 04/08/2025 11:05

Think this goes to show it is not young men [incels] who are the issue - they are simply not disguising the attitudes that many men have always had and which they feel is validated by talking to and seeing these obnoxious middle aged men behave the way they do. These days I count myself lucky that my DH, DS and FIL - well, and the male friends my DH has had decades long relationships with - are nothing like these men. I hope they are the majority, but if SM is to be believed wankers like these are becoming more brazen and emboldened.

Hope you have a twat free afternoon!!

I got shoulder barged last week and nearly toppled over. My crime? I was walking through the entrance of a store and the bloke was trying to get out by coming back through even though the exit door was right next to it. I hadn’t looked up as there was a slight lip at the door and I’m using walking sticks (neurological disorder). He mouthed off about “dole poles” and walked straight into my dh who kindly escorted him to his car.

‘Dole Poles’? That’s a new one! Such bitter resentment in so many people regardless of any facts,

SlashBeef · 04/08/2025 11:03

I sometimes dream of a random man being rude to me because I have a lot of pent up frustration. I'd like to be an absolute bitch back.

OrchardDoor · 04/08/2025 11:02

There was nothing wrong with what op said though. She was just mentioning what she uses. So it's irrelevant to why he was rude to her.

We don't know if its true or even if the OPS version is true though, so you cannot say can you.

I had one this morning!

Thought I'd drive round to the local farm shop for some of their nice bread for a little lunch time treat.
They have 2 car-parks, one either side of the entrance road, and I'd say equidistance from the front door to the shop.
I think the one on the right is technically considered an over-flow car park, as the bays are unmarked and there's less "landscaping" compared to the other car park.
I swoop into the one on the right. I'm not staying long, I'm not visiting the cafe they have on sight. I literally just want to buy some bread rolls and leave.
It's 10am on a Monday morning, not in the least bit busy. Perhaps 8 cars in the carpark on the left (there's room for maybe 40 cars), and one other in the carpark on the right (with room for about 15), where I am.

As I approach the front door, a lone man of perhaps 70 who was a couple of steps ahead of turns round and says to me, "You're only meant to park in that one if the other car park is full."

I give him my death stare, shrug and say, "Oh well."

Why would you give even a single shiny shit about where a stranger parks her car?! Bog off!

Apparently deliberately shoulder barging women is a thing now amongst a certain type of man. Someone did it to 14yr old DD at a market a couple of months ago when we were walking along then stood there with his mates laughing before making a really crude, sexual comment about her. They weren't very old, early 20s at a guess. I shouted over that she's a child, a man on one of the stalls saw/heard it all and was nearly as furious as me, he gave them what for and they ran off.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/08/2025 11:00

Worst I’ve had lately was an elderly man working in his front garden telling me to ‘Cheer up!’ when I was hurrying after little Gdd, whizzing along to nursery on her bike - we were running a bit late.
OK, I don’t have a naturally smiley face, but this sort of thing seriously pisses me off.
The next day the annoying old bugger was still there, pruning his roses or whatever, so I stopped on the way back, and told him that I wasn’t in fact miserable yesterday, but unfortunately I just don’t have a permanently smiley face, so perhaps he’d like to refrain from making such remarks to random strangers in future.

Which was rather more polite than I was tempted to be!

Goldeh · 04/08/2025 10:25

Driving along a residential street, cars parked along the roadside in the other lane. A car comes from the opposite direction, has good visibility and can definitely see me. Instead of pausing at the end of the parked cars and waiting for me to finish passing them, he pulls into my lane. I put the brakes on because he's entirely in my lane and not slowing down. He puts his brakes on, leans out the window and starts giving me a mouthful about having right of way because "you give way to the right you dozy cow". Told him I have priority in my own lane and as the obstruction is on his side, he has to give way to me. He told me I don't know how to drive and "fuck off with your dyed hair". Not sure what my dyed hair has to do with anything but he grudgingly reversed back to the end of the row of cars and offered one last "you give way to the right, bitch" as I drove past.

This actually clears up a question I had about what drivers who do this can possibly be thinking of!

Ugh the manspreading is the worst. I now keep my leg fully touching theirs until they move. Record is 20 minutes before he gave up! 🤣
