To think most men wouldn’t survive a year living the life of an average woman?

The daily grind of sexism, safety worries, juggling expectations, emotional labour… Most men have no idea. AIBU to think they’d crumble under the load if they had to swap lives with us for a year?

So hang on, you were at home 5 days out of 7 with your children? 2 days isn’t much at Nursery- perhaps you do prioritise your time at home more than your career after all?! I’m confused 😂

You're confused about a lot of things!

I work full time over four days, so does my husband, we are both at home three different days a week, daughter goes to nursery for 15 hours a week just so she can social and play with other children and grow her confidence and independence.

We both work equally, contribute to costs the home equally and parent equally and our daughter is certainly not "farmed out to poorer women". The fact you can't imagine such a setup shows how blinkered you are.

What planet are you on? I'm not telling anyone they can't have babies FFS.

I'm pointing out you that you can't claim having and raising your children is a public service due to falling birthrates. Because we actually don't need them. They are a personal choice, not a public service.

Choose to have 7 if you want! I don't care! Just don't try and claim you're doing us all an important service by having them!

To claim that our society no longer needs babies is farcical.

Same here.
We use a small amount of wraparound care but those are after school clubs DS would attend regardless of our need for childcare.

You let other people see your children after 3pm?!

Wreckless parenting.

Child, and his needs were too high to access childcare. He couldn’t cope with the unfamiliarity. Grandparents, both sets, took turns on other days, and nobody in my house works weekends.

We also don’t use holiday clubs or anything of that sort over the summer. Same reason.

I work 60hr+ weeks term time, so that I can work 20 over the holidays, and the remainder is still (fortunately) … grandparents.

I’m genuinely pleased for you that you have support from grandparents. They are all of your family, family is everything. Really pleased they help you and your family.

Well for many women having a baby still remains their number 1 priority in life, so tough! Babies will always be wanted and born. You have zero say in the matter, what a cheek!

Because I detest the current media rhetoric around babies being ‘burdens’ and ‘barriers’ to careers, they are human beings they are talking about! Beyond sad and appalling.

That’s not something I’ve come across. Seems like more hyperbole from you tbh.
Acknowledging that having a baby can negatively impact your career doesn’t mean you see your child as a burden.

Nothing, in my case.

No cleaner, gardener, window cleaner or nanny. We used a nursery for 2 days per week, but paid for it.

There are no other women (or men) cleaning my house or doing my laundry.

Do you have any links to this media referring to children as burdens?

You really should read about all the City women, Wall street women with stay-at-home husbands. There are plenty of articles online.

I think Helena Morrissey even published a book, and she's not the only one.

Now that's a valid contribution to society and a big step in the right direction for women, instead of resenting those who find interests in life without needing a job title.

Yes, I’ve noticed that women who are most resentful of one spouse outsourcing to the other often negate to discuss the amount they outsource themselves to other, usually poorer, women.

I personally think they would like a SAHW themselves!!!

The post referred to a study that concluded that women shoulder the responsibility of unpaid work.

If a person is a SAHM (specifically, because that study referred to women shoulder the responsibilities), then they are carrying the unpaid labour in their home. Which then would be adding to the figures that conclusion was derived from.

As I said, the only way to change the results of that study is for women to not carry more of the unpaid labour involved with running their homes.

Some women actually enjoy the work involved in running their own home. Some don’t believe they could outsource any of the work entailed to anyone who could do the job better with such love or pride. My poor friend has just sacked her dishonest, lazy cleaner…she would never have set one foot in my house in the first place.

But they have typically had women to prop them up.

The men who are most successful in my work all have women who are picking up EVERYTHING for them at home. The women who are most successful are outsourcing the same things to other women.

thankfully in real life you can be a productive member of society without having a payslip just for the sake of a payslip.

if we all just stayed home and tended our children undistracted the world would stop turning would it now? 😂
I don't think women should or should not stay home, their choice, but you are being beyond ridiculous.

If you take all the mothers out of the workforce and sne them home everything would collapse.
Not all women are mothers for a start, and not all women want to stay home, so we are safe.

Many jobs, done by male or female, are not that essentials anyway.

If you put all the mothers back at work, and somehow manage to create enough available childcare somehow, you are also removing all the volunteers and things won't work as smoothly as you think they would.

What's next? You are going to whinge that my year maternity leave PER CHILD was too long?

What's next? You are going to whinge that my year maternity leave PER CHILD was too long?

Obviously not. You sound like a petulant child.

You haven't said what's the minimum acceptable salary/ income for an adult to constitute "paying for everything they take".

People just deciding not to work does affect me
they really don't.

Paying in some but not enough is better than paying in nothing obviously.
so 2 adults earning £25k each, and paying tax accordingly is "better" than a single individual earning £150k and paying for his family? Really? How does that work?

I am still waiting for you to tell us what acceptable salary constitute an acceptable contribution to society.

Don’t we all already know the optimum salary for “paying for what you take,” it’s being a net contributor.

The most recent figure was £41k. Obviously that is the average it would require, as we all use different amounts of state resources. But the official figure is £41k.

'Drastically falling birthrate' isn't necessarily an issue when the world is already massively overpopulated and infrastructure creaking under the pressure. If you look at the attached graph you'll see how drastically the human population had exploded over the past century or so.

The huge number of elderly needing cared for is a genuine issue but increasing the population to deal with it is kind of like taking out new debt to pay existing debt.

Agree about the rising numbers of elderly needing care- many of their needs are currently being met by economically inactive, FT, unpaid round the clock carers who save our economy an absolute fortune!

SugarSoiree · 03/08/2025 21:08

Their husband's might be paying for their house and bills and the food they eat but they are certainly not paying for everything they take from the state.
most people aren't, how is that relevant

It's relevant because it's the point I've been trying to make to you for three fucking pages. People just deciding not to work does affect me, which is apparently your prerequisite for having an opinion, because too many people taking without paying in is the reason our public services are so stretched and our welfare state is fucked. Paying in some but not enough is better than paying in nothing obviously.

It's like banging my head against a brick wall.

As for lacking comprehension, can you not understand that you have been arguing with at least four different people all afternoon because they don't agree with you? Jesus wept.

You haven't said what's the minimum acceptable salary/ income for an adult to constitute "paying for everything they take".
