I’ve never been. 8 year old is pretty tough and handled Jurassic park rebirth this weekend. Will it be ok?

Maybe 10 or 11. I guess it depends on your child!

I go to shows. I go to museums. Going to London is not a one off treat for us.

My children have naturally gravitated towards horror. They’ve most probably picked it up off me and school have a lot to answer for. Youngest would want to come with us so I thought I’d check with people who have an actual experience of it. Either we all go or none of us go. From the posters who have answered that question (helpfully) we will not be going.

I have seen a free walking tour of Jack the Ripper though 🧐

To my eternal shame I once went, at the request, of a visiting American friend on a paying walking tour of Jack the Ripper and have regretted it ever since.

Imagine if tour companies in Yorkshire were running Peter Sutcliffe tours.

A few years' ago I was working in Fournier Street, Spitalfields, for four weeks - as I used to head to the tube around 20.00 there would be a group of tourists on a ripper walk gathered at the end of the street and it reminded me every single night of how stupid I'd been.

We took our 6 year old 🤦🏻‍♀️ we had no idea what it entailed. I felt so embarrassed and ashamed as it was terrifying. He lasted till the end though and it didn’t affect him afterwards at all. But no, I wouldn’t recommend it at all for young kids.

okydokethen · 02/08/2025 12:40

they’ve changed it, it a far shorter experience and not as scary at all. Bit jumpy but it’s not like it was.

@Sometimeswinning Why do you think horror is a good thing for young dc? Do they watch the awful news pictures shown on the 10pm news? Do they like this sort of thing or are you putting your likes on them? I’ve never introduced my dc to horror, other than a Beefeater talk at the Tower of London. Who actually needs to be frightened as a child? There’s so much more to London than expensive horror tickets. We preferred a show.

Some children love to be scared, there wouldn’t be such things as ghost trains and haunted house at theme parks and fairs if they didn’t. It’s why Tim Burton stuff is so popular with children.

Baby26 · 02/08/2025 12:30

Pretty sure I went at around 8 and was fine. I just about remember it!

Took mine at 12 and she had nightmares afterwards ☹️
Went back at 14 and she loved it.

ClassicStripe · 02/08/2025 10:36

when I was a TA we took year 6 there on a school trip which I don’t think would happen these days! I didn’t realise you could leave part way through so made all my group do the whole thing! I loved it and was really into Jack the Ripper at the time so loved when he appeared right in front of me!

allthesmallthingsarehere · 02/08/2025 10:34

No way, I went at 13 and it was really unpleasant, we all panicked and there wasn't an easy way out. Eventually some random man took pity on us and had to be quite stern to get us out.

Jamesblonde2 · 02/08/2025 10:28

Definitely not. I was scared at 13 Grin

I took a 9yr old once (not mine) who was in tears by the end!

chachahide · 02/08/2025 09:42

thornbury · 01/08/2025 19:26

I mistakenly took two 7 year olds, we had to leave before the end, which was tricky because its like going round ikea and everyone is in costume so I had to approach a zombie and try and have a rational conversation about finding the exit.

I’m sorry but this really made me laugh, I’m glad you got out though!

JustAMum35 · 02/08/2025 09:28

I’m laughing at all these replies and I’m glad it’s not only me that was traumatised as an adult 😂😂

At one point someone jumped out at me and I literally flew into the guy beside me…who should have been my boyfriend but wasn’t as mine had shit it in the scenario before and decided not to walk through the next bit with me which I didn’t realise 🥲🤣
So instead this random guy ended up with a burst lip and I had a giant egg of a lump on my forehead 😂

Then my weird thoughts started creeping in… “I wonder how many of these actors are actually psychopaths and have dreams of doing these things to people?” 🤔 “this would be the perfect place for a murdered to get a job and hide” 🤔 “I wonder how many people someone could kill in here in a day before anyone realised what was going on?” 🤔 “maybe the screams from the next room are actually people being murdered” 🫠

I don’t think it’s the place for me 🫣😂

My ex actually was for a while. He was also an entertainer/magician at Hamleys. Feels like one of those unicorn jobs where you know people do them but you never expect to meet one in real life Grin

Like my mate who was an elf I the Harrods Christmas grotto.

autienotnaughty · 02/08/2025 09:20

Mine went at 13 and 15 and loved it. 8 is pretty young. Have you been to Ripleys believe it or not. That’s good fun

Donkeys years ago (in the 90s) I worked there as a waitress at functions held there after hours. I remember serving Champaign cocktails which had a lychee soaked in cassise (eyeball). Having spent many evenings there I don't find it scary at all. BUT no 8 year old should see some of the stuff and concepts on display (prostititutes, torture / hang drawn and quartered people / disembowelment / dark / creepy music a d scarers around every corner. Its a no from me.

That's the one that was at Tooley Street. They moved in 2013. I always thought it was strange that it seemed to be in an odd place all the way down that road not really near anything..

I wouldn't. Its dark, you're hemmed in small spaces with lots of people and way too many jump scares. My sil ended up shut in a coffin at one point.
Spoiler.
In the tavern when the strobes came on I spied jack the ripper over the other side by the bar. Next strobe he's stood next to me with his face next to mine grinning.
I lost it in the mirrored room. Got separated from dh and dd, panicked and started to follow some big bloke who i thought might look after me. He got faster and started to bang the mirrors. The lady had to let him out before he had a panic attack.

Great for adults. Well worth the money. Not for kids.

Oh god this reminds me of when I took the grandchildren to the Shrek thing on the Southbank some years ago. I got left behind in a mirrored room and just couldn't find my way out - being very claustrophobic I almost lost it and started to shout for help and someone came and rescued me. The GC thought it all very funny!

Tatty247 · 02/08/2025 08:33

We went 10 years ago when DS was 9ish and I don't remember it being that scary - certainly didn't need to leave. We just thought it was all quite funny and still quote from it now. No one else in our group left either. I thought it was inappropriate to have stuff about prostitutes there though when anyone over 5 can go.

You know the scarers have to act unhinged and crazy? He wasn't acting...!

Okey dokey!

Westfacing · 02/08/2025 08:23

I haven't been for decades but do remember it was gruesome - things like people dressed in rags behind bars being mistreated and tortured.
