When I'm Prime Minister I'm going to make this a priority (sod the economy).
No Halloween stuff in the shops in bloody July, nothing Chritmas until after Halloween, or preferably bonfire night. And please make bonfire night an actual thing again.
Chritmas starts so early now I'm already over it by September.
Is anybody with me?

Yes but it will involve having to purchase Christmas themed items.

I see what you mean. It might be cheaper to do that online in bulk maybe.

Needmorelego · 01/08/2025 22:56

Isittimeformynapyet · 01/08/2025 22:46

Well yes, of course you will, but that's got nothing to do with this thread 🙄

I didnt. I'm saying shops should stock less and sell less. Sell other stuff in October and November that is actually appropriate to the season. Or use the space for non-seasonal ordinary food and other goods.

You only "need" to stock so much because shops stock it so early in the first place so people think they need it. If all the shops started only selling mince pies and Christmas wrapping paper in December nobody would really be clamouring for them earlier.

We do stock other items but the seasonal items ie Halloween, Christmas etc accounts for most of our profit. We do still have summer games pools etc out but sales of those have slowed down completely.

NoSoupForU · 01/08/2025 22:55

You can just choose not to buy into it. Shops wouldn't dedicate shelf space to it if people weren't buying it. Some people want to start buying things early because its how they budget. I don't buy anything for Halloween so it doesn't phase me either way. I don't buy anything for Xmas until advent. Except mince pies which frankly should be a year round event. And I can't find it in me to be arsed about people buying egg shaped chocolate at any time of year. Its just chocolate.

DappledThings · 01/08/2025 22:54

Isittimeformynapyet · 01/08/2025 22:50

So do you buy your kids the wrong size uniforms every year then?

Ha! No, I have to order it from Sainsbury's and wait to collect it instead of just being able to walk in and pick it up.

School shorts are a particularly hard item to find because despite the fact September is usually still really warm the shops have decided it is already the depths of winter and once again you are prevented from buying a range of clothes appropriate to the actual time of year that it is

It's a year round problem really. Kids change size at all times so it really makes no sense that the amount available should be greater or smaller at any time of year so it is particularly galling that it is early July when it's in larger quantities. The absolute last time anyone needs it.

Isittimeformynapyet · 01/08/2025 22:50

DappledThings · 01/08/2025 11:44

Absolutely. Every year I can't find school uniform in the right sizes at the end of August when I actually need it and I refuse to buy it in June because I don't want to be part of the problem.

Hmmm 🤔
I'm thinking of making some Christmas decorations this year to sell at a couple of events.
If I am going to make it worth it I will need to start organising it now.

Well yes, of course you will, but that's got nothing to do with this thread 🙄

You misunderstood my post. We have neither the warehouse or shelf space to keep the amount of stock we get through if it was solely done in December or even just Nov/dec. We've already got an increase in toys coming in to cover the Christmas period and last year we ran out of wrapping paper in the middle of December. We don't have any Christmas items out yet.

You'd have my vote. This so annoys me! It takes the joy out of the seasons by rushing things.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 01/08/2025 22:31

DappledThings · 01/08/2025 18:38

Bit you could just keep seasonal stuff actually seasonal.

It's summer. There's no reason the seasonal aisle can't still be full now of paddling pools and garden toys etc. Keep the Halloween stuff till October, use the space in between times for more general items and keep Christmas stuff off the shelves till December.

People are only buying it because it's there. It's shops driving customers to think they need stuff early and creating a fake demand, not reacting to it.

I'm fully behind OP. There will be fines in the millions of pounds for un-seasonal stockage when she's in power!

I saw a Halloween wreath on someone's front door today on the way to work. This was at 7.15am so they must have been there last night. Who the eff puts up Halloween decorations in July??

Kill. Them.

Christmas every four years sounds bloody awful. I don't have a lot of Christmases left with my Dad and under your regime, I could have no more Christmases with him. No. NO.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 01/08/2025 21:26

WhatNoRaisins · 01/08/2025 18:43

I mean back when it wasn't normal to have Halloween stuff in June and Christmas stuff in September the public still managed to celebrate those festivals.

I miss those halcyon days.

Arraminta · 01/08/2025 20:33

Yes I absolutely hate it. Shopping with DD yesterday and there were sweaters, boots and coats everywhere. Autumnal displays in shops with just the faintest hint of Christmas already thrown in. In July! Fucking July!

I refuse to subscribe to any of it. My Christmas traditions don't start until Dec. 1st when I sit down, light my Winter candle and write my Christmas cards.

LizTruss · 01/08/2025 20:24

I'm with you here, dear.

That was EXACTLY my next step, having sorted out the country's finance.
However other 'people' think that they have better ideas...

...and we can all see what that lead to. 🙄

Oceann · 01/08/2025 20:19

Yep that’s how i do it . I ignore Halloween until the week before and Christmas until mid November !

PhoenixReincarnated · 01/08/2025 20:13

KnickerlessParsons · 01/08/2025 17:28

I’ll vote for you. And if you make me deputy prime minister I will make it compulsory that all road works have to have a sign up telling you what they are doing. Like “we are fixing a hole in the water pipe” or we are joining the gas supply for the new housing estate to the mains”. That kind of thing.

Or in one case in our town "we are laying pipes in order to be able to connect the new housing estate to the mains gas supply" followed shortly by "we are now laying the correct size pipes in order to be able to connect the new housing estate to the mains gas supply" 🙄😂 To make matters worse the road affected was a busy one especially at rush hour and the temporary traffic lights were there for ages causing a lot of inconvenience.

Butteredtoast55 · 01/08/2025 20:10

When compiling your full manifesto, please can you also ban the phrase 'spooky season'? Autumn is such a beautiful, glorious time of harvest bounty and goodness, please can we celebrate that instead of the flogging of hideous 'horror tat'?

ThisChirpyLemonUser · 01/08/2025 20:04

I can't buy Halloween stuff on autumn because it's sold out by August madness completely pointless

PhoenixReincarnated · 01/08/2025 20:01

Most shops restrict their seasonal stuff to one aisle which can be avoided. What can't be avoided is the Christmas music they play from September(ish). That I'd ban until December.

And only one major roadworks project at a time. I'm not kidding, there are about five projects going on in my town and you can't leave town in any direction without hitting roadworks; there are diversions on the diversions - it's a complete joke. These are not emergency works, they are long projects going on for months.

RuthW · 01/08/2025 19:46

I wouldn’t vote for you. I’m thinking about Christmas now. I’ll just wait til after my birthday (3 weeks) then I’m full on Xmas.

SusanChurchouse · 01/08/2025 19:05

Christmas every 4 years would be amazing.

Halloween can be all year round as far as I’m concerned because I like it (Scottish so always massive here) but I do agree June is a bit silly. Sorry TK Maxx I do love you. Back to School stuff needs to be out before end of August though. Mine start back on the 13th.
