To ask neighbour to close curtains

Handrearedmagpie · 31/07/2025 22:57

First of all, I know IABU. It's more a question of HOW unreasonable.
My young DS is autistic, non speaking and has a severe learning disability. Meltdowns are triggered by sudden changes like adverts on the TV. Neighbour diagonally across street from me has very large windows and an ENORMOUS TV. Never shuts her curtains/blinds so DS can watch her TV from our house and fixates on it when his own tablet is removed before bedtime.
Every. Single. Night. It's meltdown when adverts appear on her TV. Obviously I shut our own blinds but he knows her TV is there and just opens them again, or he will go upstairs and hyper focus on her TV from my bedroom window.
How horrendously unreasonable would I be to ask her to close her blinds for half an hour at night just to avoid this nightly hysteria??! I'm at my wits end with it.
YABU - absolutely unreasonable. It's your child's disability to manage.
YANBU - you can only ask and see what she says.

Bu the way, other posters have suggested helpful practical solutions to the OP. The suggestion of privacy film over the window in question is a simple and inexpensive solution.

OP also said she had tried putting a lock on the door but her son had broken it - so get it replaced with a more robust lock, perhaps higher up where he can’t reach it.

The OP has addressed this and said film on the window would likely cause him to headbutt it until he injured himself.

I can’t believe people are being so vile. I don’t have kids or much SEN experience but if a neighbour asked me to close just one of the blinds in a dual aspect room for half an hour per evening for one week to see if it stopped a severely disabled child becoming distraught, of course I would. You’d have to be a selfish arsehole not to.

Shut your own curtains and ensure your child stays away from them.

Sorry answer. Would be no why can't you change your routine to suit your knee d instead of expecting others to accommodate

No she didnt say every evening. She said it would help if it was a week/ a few days to break the association.

She didn’t say that in her OP. She said it as an afterthought once she started getting push-back. And anyway, what if the ‘one week’ trial period worked but then Mrs Jones resumed her old routine and the child’s meltdowns resumed immediately? Then what? Ludicrous.

Some people are being weirdly obsessive about arguing with any poster who doesn't share their opinion. Whilst frustratingly they'll no doubt feel they've 'won' if allowed to have the last word sometimes they're best off being ignored. Its like speaking to a lump of wet cement with some people isn't it.

What kind of person leaves the curtain open! Does the light not shine on their TV?!

Look at it this way:
If you ask her and she says no she will think you’re bonkers
if you ask her and she says yes your problem is solved.

If you don’t mind being thought of as bonkers by a stranger in the pursuit of making your DS’s life easier (which I suspect is the case) than bite the bullet

Don’t be a smart arse. Presumably you have some basic grasp of human psychology? Asking puts pressure on the person to say yes. I would definitely say no and I would be annoyed to be asked, but the act of asking would also cause me to feel stressed and uncomfortable, because I hate confrontation, and would also feel self-conscious that this neighbour is monitoring my home and getting upset with me.

The OP wants to guilt-trip a complete stranger to do something in her own home, not just once, but EVERY evening. Anyone who says they’d agree to this stupidity is lying.

I don't think that's how it normally works. The OP knows the neighbour can say know but that doesn't mean she can't ask. Do you always say yes if someone asks if you could do something? Must lead to some interesting situations.

Why the patronising HTH??
At no point have I said everyone should think the same so of course some people agree with you.
It seems like you’re just arguing for the sake of it now.

There isn't any harm in asking.

a certain few posters are being ridiculous and from now on I'm just going to ignore them because they're incredibly irritating.

I'm sure @Handrearedmagpie 's neighbour is a normal person who won't mind being asked & will be able to help or not according to her personal circumstances.

So now people aren't 'normal' because they don't expect the neighbours to want to control when they close or open their own curtains? 🤔🫣🤣

@Morgenrot25 You posted 45 times in the last ten pages alone. i think we get the message that it would all be too much for you.

Op - I hope you can find a solution. My neighbours are lovely people who would listen and, if they couldn't help, they would at least be sympathetic and kind about it. Good luck to you.

And?
Is there a limit to how many times we're allowed to respond to ridiculous suggestions?
