Podcasts are Annoying

Its just radio 📻 😌
Don't get me started on every celeb and his dog starting one.
Also I assume most of them wouldn't make much money from doing it?
It's just a hobby. Some have so few listeners.
BBC Sounds are happy though to toss money at literally any Z list celeb to make one.
To think I used to admire the BBC compared to ITV etc..

I really don't get the point of podcasts. They invariably start with a load of boring rambling about random life events pertaining to the podcaster before the podcaster even starts on whatever it was they are podcasting about.

I avoid all of them now.

Well, bad ones do. A suggestion. Don’t listen to bad ones!

Mokel · 05/08/2025 16:07

I like British Murders
Sliced Bread/Toast. Sliced Bread is a podcast about the latest fads are the worth it or complete bs. Toast is about companies that once were big and now no longer exist.

suburburban · 05/08/2025 16:01

Oooh I agree with you so much about the 'telling you what's coming' and 'in the last episode ' , in the next episode.
So now I know what been , what's here and what's to come , ffs just get on with it !

Does anyone else have issues with downloading from bbc sounds when it's 10 or more episodes ?
I like to down load a full series all at once but every time it's 10 or more it always puts episode 10 between 1 and 2 .
Even if I download 1 to 9 then wait a few hrs to download 10 it still puts it in the wrong place 🤔

It sounds like it's sorting them alphabetically.

If it's a current BBC podcast, then chances are it will be on most of the other podcast providers like Pocketcasts, and it's generally easier to download them all on one of those platforms. The BBC Sounds app is awful.

Definitely agree. I'll never understand why there's so much demand to listen to people prattling on, usually about incredibly tedious subjects.

I suppose it's a bit like the blogging craze of the early 2000s, when we all had unlimited internet access and everybody and their dog had a blog, thinking that they were suitably interesting for large numbers of people to want to read them.

But while writing (and particularly good writing) is a genuine skill, podcasting doesn't really require any - and that's probably why there's so damn many of them now.

Edited

But there are tons of well-written podcasts on just about any subject imaginable, so you don't have to listen to people prattle or listen to them talk about tedious subjects. You find good podcasts about things you're interested in, just like you do when choosing books to read or films and TV shows to watch.

Who is tying you down and blasting them at you? They sound annoying.

I like podcasts but considering the pod part of the name originally came from ipod - they're meant to be consumed individually. Or, you know, not.

I do find it annoying when a podcast maker thinks they are on a radio show and does any or all of the following:

Has a pointlessly long intro explaining what their podcast is and what they are going to talk about. Just fucking talk about it then! If I've got this far I've probably read the description!

Instructs people to "stay tuned" Hmm

Keeps interrupting the flow to recap what's already been said and summarise what's coming up. Again. Nobody is starting from halfway through! This is especially annoying if it bulks out 15 mins of content to half an hour or so. Just a waste of my time. Have a short podcast and cut the waffle, or a long one where you actually get to the interesting part of the conversation.

And then my last pet peeve is boring and completely irrelevant segments like you'll have an interesting podcast and then randomly they'll have a segment where they review a biscuit recipe of the week or something. I don't care! If I wanted to listen to a podcast about recipes, I'd look for that.

Oooh I agree with you so much about the 'telling you what's coming' and 'in the last episode ' , in the next episode.
So now I know what been , what's here and what's to come , ffs just get on with it !

Ah OK I don't listen to the radio really.

KassandraOfSparta · 03/08/2025 15:00

Most podcasts are very poor quality. Anyone and his dog can have one. Whether they should is another matter.

Part of this is true. It is very easy to start your own podcast and it is definitely something which not everyone is good at. Some of the low-budget ones I listen to (mainly about history/heritage) are really good not because they have amazing production values and hi-tech studios, but because the person cares about their topic, is very knowledgeable and communicates well.

But "most" being very poor quality? That's just not true, many of the big TV/Radio organisations around the world make their own podcasts like BBC or Sky News or New York Times. Then there are the other brands which just make podcasts - iHeart, Wondery, Goalhanger. There are a lot of podcasts i'm just not interested in the topic, but that doesn't mean they are poor quality.

Recent good listens for those interested in podcasts:

Titanic - Ship of Dreams, narrated by one of the acting McGanns. Excellent retelling of the story.
British Scandal (Wondery) - dramatisations of scandals like Lord Lucan, the Salisbury poisonings, The Peru Two...
Death in Ice Valley - co production between BBC and Norwegian broadcaster about an unsolved mystery which is absolutely fascinating
Assume Nothing - BBC N Ireland podcast with short seasons on a specific story.
Marianna in Conspiracyland - again several stories, all looking at conspiracy theorists.

Not liking podcasts is like saying you don't like books or television programmes. There are plenty of educational ones (although that's probably not your cup of tea) as well as 'celeb' ones.

They're a good medium for keeping up to date with what's going on, particularly science research or things like health advances, which hardly ever make it to radio let alone TV.

Some of the comedy is brilliant, as is some of the true crime. Just like other media there's something for everyone. If you've only listened to the shallow Z list celebrity type ones then I don't think you're in a position to comment on ALL podcasts.

Well to be honest I don't get those either! I think I've been to the cinema once in the last 20 years and only a handful of time prior to that.

If I watch/listen to something I want it to be relevant to the reason I'm watching it. I'm not interested in your Love Island habit - it may matter to you, it doesn't to me and I prefer not to spend my time listening to you wittering on about it in the hope that you may eventually say something interesting about life in Iron Age Britain which is what the podcast is supposed to be about.

Most podcasts are very poor quality. Anyone and his dog can have one. Whether they should is another matter.

That’s just not true though. There see tons of podcasts hosted by very knowledgeable people on every subject from deadly poisons to astronomy and many of them have very little to no waffle at all. Certainly not about Love Island.

KassandraOfSparta · 03/08/2025 14:21

How are people so hard of thinking.

I really don't get the point of films. They invariably start with special effects and other random nonsense before the movie even gets going and you see the main actor.

Clearly nonsense. Why do posters feel they have to contribute to a thread when they know nothing about the topic? So many people have said there are podcasts about everything from ancient history to cricket and everything in between, but oh no, they're all "rambling about life events".

Maybe I will pop into a Love Island thread to tell people who enjoy that sort of thing that I don't get the point of that show. Doesn't matter that I've never seen an episode and no nothing about it, I can still waste their time pontificating.

Are you joking about the films?
Isn't that just for action/ sci fi/ fantasy films.

I mainly watch drama films and often smaller budget ones.

Edit yeh you are.

Its irrelevant if I watch a bit of crap TV. I still find podcasts annoying.
But I may not have come across one thats really good. Fair point from PP.

Edited

No, the point is, if you only watched those kinds of films, you’d think that’s what all films were. Bit like you’re doing with podcasts.
