To think men shouldn’t be allowed to express pro-life opinions?

Was just watching (by accident, went down a bit of a rabbit hole!) a YouTube video of this infuriating American far-right man talking about how abortion shouldn’t be allowed (even in the case of rape). Watching it made me angrier and angrier. It’s bad enough hearing anyone bang on about banning abortion, but of course, everyone is entitled to an opinion. However, when it’s a man who has no clue what a woman’s body goes through, and has no regard for the giant responsibility and completely life-changing effect a baby has on a mother’s life (cos let’s be realistic, many fathers find it pretty easy to walk away or continue living life completely responsibly-free), I feel like, how dare he express these opinions, he shouldn’t have a say, it’s just not his place. AIBU or should men be allowed to express anti-abortion opinions? I’m not talking about men whose partner gets pregnant, I’m talking about politicians and men with power talking about banning abortion in general. Watching them talk about it gives me the ick

What I do find interesting though is that as far as I can see the 'pro life' lobby has b*r all interest in the welfare of children once they are born.

Ditto quite a lot of the 'anti euthanasia' people

I don't think this is true. I had a colleague who was pro-life and the organisation she supported certainly did provide a range of support to mothers who kept their babies.

TaborlinTheGreat · 31/07/2025 13:50

Of course they should be allowed to have an opinion. Are you the thought police? Anyone is allowed an opinion on anything. That doesn't mean anyone has to takr any noticd of their opinion.

OnLifesEndlessCorridor · 31/07/2025 13:49

You want to live without freedom of speech? Thats a slippery slope.

It is better to let people say what they want and challenge them on their views when you don’t agree.

RoseAlone · 31/07/2025 13:49

Of course they should have an opinion. It's their baby too.

Elseaknows · 31/07/2025 13:49

Men should definitely be allowed to express these opinions .... so we can avoid them at all costs. walking red flags

Robin67 · 31/07/2025 13:48

Everybody should be able to express an opinion. Just ignore the ones you don't agree with

Yes, men can have an opinion and express that opinion.

Which is all well and good, but those opinions have a nasty habit of becoming law, don't they.

I agree, OP. No man can morally hold a view other than pro-choice.

wavymavy · 31/07/2025 13:47

I only see pro-life used by people who are anti-abortion but don't want to call themselves that because of the negativity

Or because it actually better reflects their opinion. From their perspective their view is about saving human life. Just like pro-choice better reflects the view of the other side than ' pro-abortion'.

No one has absolute bodily autonomy.

So, once again, ‘controlling’ someone else’s body hangs on the fact that you don’t consider the foetus to be human.

If you do (say at 30 weeks) then an abortion at this point is the same as allowing someone infected with a disease to wander freely. Many people would also favour compulsory vaccination to protect the vulnerable who cannot get vaccinated.

The main reason boys get HPV vaccine is to protect women from cervical cancer (yes, there are other very rare male cancers it also helps with).

It is a nuanced discussion of ethics and men have as much right to contribute as women to that, just as women can contribute to discussions about male circumcision and prostate cancer, despite it being outside their lived experience.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 31/07/2025 13:44

All people should be allowed freedom of speech, whether we like what they say or not. And that man's opinions sound monstrous, but he has the right to say them, just as we have to right to prove how dehumanising and misogynistic they are.

That said, and I'm aware of the irony of what I'm about to write, but I'm definitely side-eyeing your use of "pro-life" in your OP. I only see pro-life used by people who are anti-abortion but don't want to call themselves that because of the negativity.

PermanentTemporary · 31/07/2025 13:43

Important to know which men have these views. Also true that there genuinely is a spectrum of opinion on this, which runs from me (abortion on request for any woman who doesn’t want to be pregnant at any time) to him. There are quite a lot of people who are nowhere near either of us, and that’s fine.

Social media is designed to make you angry. Step away, but make sure your MP knows that keeping access to abortion is important to you, and consider donating to organisations- I donate to the Abortion Support Network due to its work in countries where abortion is hard to access.

Periperi2025 · 31/07/2025 13:41

I think any man opposing abortion should have a forced vasectomy.

See how quickly the men start shouting "my body, my choice"

They wouldn't like it if someone else had control over their body and their reproductive rights.

MinPinSins · 31/07/2025 13:40

Any man who is pro-life should show their commitment and get a vasectomy - that way they could guarantee they don't cause a pregnancy which may end up being terminated.

HerewardtheSleepy · 31/07/2025 12:52

You can't make a baby with a uterus alone.

A fairly irrelevant point in a discussion about bodily autonomy.

JHound · 31/07/2025 13:36

I think anybody should be allowed to express any opinion they want.

We should be free to ignore them.

Personally I am not interested in ANY opinion’s on abortion except for the opinion of the woman seeking one. People need to learn to mind their own body.

Mrsbloggz · 31/07/2025 13:36

Generally speaking people do not cede power willingly.
Men understand (implicitly or explicitly) that their dominance rests on their ability to control women, that's why they keep trying to do it!

They do not want to relinquish their ability to control things for their own benefit.

ChaToilLeam · 31/07/2025 13:33

They can have all the opinions they like. I just won't give them any consideration. Actually, I want pro-life men to express their opinions so that women can avoid them. I don't have to worry about pregnancy any more, but back when I did, I wouldn't have slept with a pro-life man. They don't deserve it.

Whiningatwine · 31/07/2025 13:31

I don't mind them having opinions on the subject. They just shouldn't carry any weight.

miniaturepixieonacid · 31/07/2025 13:28

I think YABU.

Nobody, male or female, has the right to dictate what an individual woman does with her body.

Everybody, male and female, is entitled to an opinion on abortion and whether life begins at conception or birth.

HerewardtheSleepy · 31/07/2025 12:52

Iheartmysmart · 31/07/2025 11:39

You’re not wrong in my view. No uterus, no opinion. And surely it’s about time women took a turn at deciding men’s rights.

You can't make a baby with a uterus alone.

Nanny0gg · 31/07/2025 12:47

Goldeh · 31/07/2025 11:46

No one should get a say about abortion other than the woman considering one. Not your uterus, not your business.

I think they should have an opinion in general

They shouldn't have a say over a specific woman's choice

PollyBell · 31/07/2025 12:38

Well if it wasn't for men as well there would be no babies, so I want your sperm but not your opinion?

MushMonster · 31/07/2025 12:35

OP, I get how you feel, but everyone is allowed to express their opinion. You cannot just take that right away from anyone. It makes zero real difference whether that opinion is held by a man or a woman. It stings when is someone who does not know the in and outs, but you cannot take away the right to have a say.

Fearfulsaints · 31/07/2025 12:30

Like others are saying men are allowed an opinion.

But i suppose my opinion is it should be given less weight in any decision making process or legal framework.
