Qatar, Saudi and Egypt are putting increasing pressure on Hamas to disarm and accept a ceasefire to end the war.

Meanwhile Starmer is giving Hamas exactly what they want, to be recognised with a state. Why is the UK so weak? Where are our sanctions or pressure on Hamas? Why is it down to the Arab states only to actually try to fix this mess by removing Hamas?

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt join calls for Hamas to disarm and exit Gaza to end war with Israel

Arab nations — including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt — joined calls Tuesday for Hamas to disarm and give up its grip on Gaza to end the 21-month war.

Also OP, Britain and France have called on Hamas to down weapons and disband.

so not sure what your issue is, to be honest

This is embarrassingly simplifying.

Probably still too complex for you to comprehend.

Dangermoo · 30/07/2025 09:34

No, I'm addressing one point made, in a post. If that's uncomfortable for you, why is that?

Why? because you struggled to comprehend the the whole post. Well, we can’t help you there. You’ll have to try harder.

Voxon · 30/07/2025 11:06

No,he issued demands of Hamas, but not conditions. The conditions only apply to Israel

That's a really useful clarification, thank you.

It's hard to see the nuance in the way it is being reported

Helpins · 30/07/2025 08:09

Yes whilst it’s still run by Hamas. It means the Uk will be recognising Hamas as the government of Palestine.

Hamas is only governing Gaza, not Palestine as a whole. I mean almost two years into this war, if you didn’t know that not sure what you do know!

Yes this. Even Macron hasn’t done this.

The Arab states are directly calling on Hamas to disarm and relinquish control in Gaza.

The UK have mentioned disarmament, but are not directly calling for Hamas to relinquish control.

The Arab states are demanding Hamas hand over control to the PA.

Again, how is it that Arab states are demanding more of Hamas than we are?

Because in short Hamas is funded by Iran. The other Arab states are not fans of Iran (without getting into to too much history and also Iran is more Shia and Jordan, UAE, Saudi more Sunni), and they don't want Iran to continue funding other terrorist groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis is Yemen (they bomb ships and it hurts trade). Jordan also fears that Iran's precense in Syria is dangerous to them. Yemen has also become a failed state and there's been a crisis of malnutrition happening for months and months unfortunately. Plus they don't want any further disruption with Israel and also it's their region so obviously they'll have more impact espeically because they don't want to have to take in refugees from Gaza (particularly Jordan) and have the economic dominance in the region meaning they'll be responsible for the reconstruction and lots of aid work as well. It's also in their best interest that a. The war stops, and 2. Palestine runs as a functioning state.

TheNuthatch · 30/07/2025 11:13

@Voxon Your first post was a really interesting read, thank you. Potentially disastrous for the region then, all for the sake of grand-standing. Food for thought.

Am I missing something? I thought Starmer had put conditions on both sides.

From the Guardian: Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, must immediately release all remaining Israeli hostages, sign up to a ceasefire, disarm and “accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza”, Starmer also said.

So we would only recognise Palestine as a state without Hamas in government.

That seems fair but I'm obviously no expert.

Israel doesn't like Hamas? Should they be liking the murderous scum, who carried out a bloody massacre on 7/10?

Quite. This isn’t a playground spat. It is viscous facistic murderous thugs attempting to claim some legitimacy.

SerendipityJane · 30/07/2025 10:55

Nchangeo · 30/07/2025 08:15

I think it’s because you have to assume the people are voting Hamas in because their policy aim is to be recognised as a state.

It’s a bit like here with reform. Most people don’t want to vote for them. But if they are the only people who will sort immigration then it’s looking increasingly like that’s how they will vote.

So Reform are the Hamas of the UK ?

Righty ho.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 30/07/2025 10:52

Shame these arab countries aren't getting tougher with the hamas leaders they're hosting in luxury while the people of Gaza suffer.

caramac04 · 30/07/2025 10:48

I probably need to read more around this awful situation but neither side are covered in glory. Hamas started this particular situation but Israel are committing genocide. Of all the people in the world surely Jewish people can see how wrong that is?
Obviously, the general populations aren’t the ones making the decisions.
Will there ever be peace between Israelis and Palestinians?
I am sad, angry and distressed by what I see on the news.
Can any other nations actually effect a lasting peace?

FalkorFluff · 30/07/2025 10:41

I suspect through fear of alienating voters over here who secretly, or not so secretly support Hamas.

AzurePanda · 30/07/2025 10:36

As usual Starmer’s timing and political acumen are dire.

EasternStandard · 30/07/2025 10:24

Voxon · 30/07/2025 09:48

I can't comment as to the reasons, but it's apparent to be that very large numbers of western politicians either do not understand or are more interested in votes than integrity, but the simple truth is this:

The resolution to middle eastern peace involves crushing islamism and achieving modernisation.

That must happen to end terrorism, abuse of women, war, violence, oppressive theocracy etc etc

Westerners are very good at understanding the role oil and war has played in creating the humanitarian crisis that's been ongoing for decades, but they struggle to see the role Islamic extremism has played.

Moderate or monarchy states understand those violent ideologies must be crushed, not encouraged or rewarded. And while none of these places are liberal or democratic, they are at least moving forwards.

Hamas and such groups want to move backwards, and the amount of suffering empowering such groups can cause is astronomical.

I think it’s SM and the pressure it puts on politicians. The cabinet were pushing on this and other MPs. It’s not as informed ir well considered as Arab nations.

Your last line is worrying, and you could be right.

ruffler45 · 30/07/2025 09:11

None of this would be happening in Hamas were not around as they have the people terrorised in its severest form
Question is where does Hamas get it's money from, I guess Starmer and the rest of the world leaders know already.

Yep.

I believe they're referring to pre 1967 borders and the 2m+ Palestinians who belong to that land.

Thanks

But what/ who is the state of Palestine right now?

I believe they're referring to pre 1967 borders and the 2m+ Palestinians who belong to that land.

redriding1976 · 30/07/2025 09:57

Why? Because they like the affluent lives they have. They want to keep the tourists coming to their region. They want to sit in coffee shops and have their beards trimmed daily and work limited hours. They like their Christmases skiing and their summer hols in London , Spain or Switzerland. Why would they want to get involved directly with Hamas? I'm not saying they don't feed Hamas but it's not public.
