If you knew that a single parent took a DC with active chicken pox to a shop? If they couldn’t get a delivery slot, and had no one to drop food off but fridge/cupboards empty.

OP posts:
Vintagenow · 30/07/2025 10:48

I couldn't get worked up about this. Chickenpox, like most viruses, are most infectious before symptoms appear so pretty much every kid that's ever had chickenpox will have been taken out in public when unknowingly infectious.
Plus you don't have a choice of there is no-one to help/available deliveries, you have to eat.

CopperWhite · 30/07/2025 10:40

All the guilt tripping about pregnant women is unfair.

There is a vaccine for chicken pox that anyone who is TTC is free to get. Women have an option to protect themselves if they want to.

I see it as very similar to the debates on here about a father’s rights after conception. The usual MN consensus is that men have the opportunity to protect themselves before conception and if they don’t, they have to accept the consequences. They don’t get to assert control over other people’s bodies or actions because they failed to protect themselves. It’s the same thing.

Brickiscool · 30/07/2025 10:35

It's fine. Rush in get what you need . Rush out . Don't let kid touch anything. You could catch chicken pox any where and at any time. Truly immunosuppressed people know the risks they are taking going out anywhere and live accordingly.

There has been very long standing advice about isolating for certain diseases. At least my whole life time. People have for many, many years been advised to isolate with chicken pox, measles, mupms etc. Chicken pox has very specific risks for specific groups of people and is much, much more contagious than covid.

I think the covid debacle has had the opposite effect to you. I think people are less likely to isolate with every single disease and more likely to think the longstanding advice is nonsense.

Agreed!

It’s always been the advice with chicken pox for the reasons many pps have set out.

And it’s not “hysteria” (nice internalised misogyny from that poster) to have some consideration for others.

I agree re Covid - people’s dislike of the lockdowns and the hypocrisy of the government of the day have led people to dismiss long standing advice re contagious illnesses.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/07/2025 10:23

Is there really no company that will deliver at all to you where you live? Even if it comes at a premium?

So your only option at all is to go into a shop?

Even where my parents live in middle of nowhere you can get deliveries - just have to think ahead a tiny bit.

Have you really got nothing in the house you both could eat?

SusanChurchouse · 30/07/2025 10:18

I’m undergoing chemo at the moment and have to actively avoid anyone with chicken pox as it can be dangerous for me. If it can be avoided at all then try.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 30/07/2025 10:15

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 29/07/2025 17:18

I don’t see it as an issue! As long as they don’t touch anyone and keep them from touching things I don’t see the issue.

As someone who had chickenpox at 30 weeks pregnant and was very, very ill, to the extent that I could have lost the baby, I can say, absolutely, that it is selfish and it is an issue.

PestoHoliday · 30/07/2025 10:02

Park up, leave 5 year old in the car with a book or tablet and the windows open enough for air, lock the car and dash in for the meds and bread and milk to see you through until tomorrow. Arrange a delivery for everything else.

PurpleThistle7 · 30/07/2025 09:07

You are a very lucky person. I have loads of food around all the time (it's actually a bit of a problem and I have to stop myself stocking up to a ridiculous point), but I can absolutely picture a scenario of someone on a low income who just buys what they can and then eats it.

Im on a low income. A minimum wage job and universal credit but I prioritise food over other things. I would never be in a situation where there was no food in the house especially if I lived somewhere that had no delivery services and I had no family or friends all it takes is getting the flu or being hospitalised to be completely screwed. As an adult especially a single parent you need to be organised and prepared for every eventuality no excuses. I bet if you asked op to post a photo of her cupboards fridge and freezer their would be food in their what she means is their is no food they prefer in their and arent willing to make do for a couple of days.

Fearfulsaints · 30/07/2025 09:20

MrBallenIsaFittie · 29/07/2025 17:42

Exactly this!
There is always hysteria on here if anyone mentions leaving the house with so much as a sniffle.....
As long as you cover your child (long sleeves/trousers) and don't allow them to cough and splutter over the produce the chances of anyone catching anything are very remote.
Since Covid people seem to want to isolate with every single disease. Unfortunately if we all do that immunity will drop and we will end up sick/dying from things we would previously fought off easily.
If people are vulnerable to certain things would it not make sense for them to be getting regular home deliveries rather than expecting the population to grind to a hault and isolate every time a bug goes around?

A child needs to eat and if the only option is to take them to the shops then that’s what needs to happen.

I would think it’s sad that you don’t have help and that anyone who accused you of being selfish was actually very selfish themselves.

I appreciate that immunocompromised people might exist out in society, but so are small children and childhood illness is a normal part of life.

PurpleThistle7 · 30/07/2025 09:08

To answer the OP - yes, I think this is terribly selfish. I'd look for every other option possible and then park the car somewhere I could see to run into a corner shop for what I need for today, getting a shop in tomorrow as you said is possible. You just need a few bits for one night.

PurpleThistle7 · 30/07/2025 09:07

youalright · 29/07/2025 18:38

It always amazes me people have no food in their house. Like freezer completely empty fridge and cupboards empty. How does that even happen surely you shop well before it gets to this point are people just running empty fridges and freezers.

Ademasstudio · 30/07/2025 09:03

Doesn’t look like the OP even has one pea they can share

it’s obviously hyperbole she has nothing in

and it’s obviously hyperbole that “no delivery slots” at one single place

hop in car with CP child, drive to a garage, jump out

youalright · 30/07/2025 07:36

Cucy · 30/07/2025 05:01

Most people have to wait until they get paid before they can do another shop to restock the cupboards and fridge etc.

But how have they eaten every piece of food before the next shop we shop weekly and their is still food left when we go shopping. How can the fridge, freezer, and cupboards all be bare like no butter, cheese left no pasta, tins of soup or beans. No freezer stuff. I just couldnt imagine the day before I went shopping saying to the kids we have 1 pea left so you have to share it

autienotnaughty · 30/07/2025 07:31

Do you have a friend you could ask to baby sit.? I’d nip to local shop and leave her in car to grab 2/3 items (if its a quiet safe area)
then book a big shop in for tomorrow

Shoxfordian · 30/07/2025 07:28

Its not ideal really but if you have to then you have to.

Eenameenadeeka · 30/07/2025 07:26

Really really selfish and a horrible thing to do. You don't know who you might pass it onto, and who they might pass it onto, it can be really dangerous for some people and you don't know that you don't pass it on to a newborn baby or a pregnant mum. Selfish.

NeedZzzzzssss · 30/07/2025 05:17

Incredibly selfish, of course if you wanted to you'd find a way or not go. Oh well karma on you now.

Zanatdy · 30/07/2025 05:17

sure some supermarket or uber eats etc can deliver, or are you so rural not possible? I’d keep DC at home, no friends whose DC have had chicken pox who can help?

Glitchymn1 · 30/07/2025 05:14

MrBallenIsaFittie · 29/07/2025 18:01

Which is fine but what about things like work? If you can't work from home and don't get sick pay you are screwed, I care more about feeding my children and keeping a roof over their heads than some mystery vulnerable person. My husband feels the same and he has been very much 'crack on with life' about things. Our thinking being that he was vulnerable before covid but because there wasn't mass hysteria about illness he made the best decisions he could based on the risk of him getting ill. He certainly didn't begrudge his colleagues coming into work with a cold because he knew they would lose pay if they didn't.
I do think a lot (not all) of mumsnetters live in a very middle class bubble which includes being financially comfortable enough to be off sick (and probably get sick pay) and have no idea what it is like to fear being to ill to go to work.
If you are vulnerable then surely it is on you to protect yourself as much as possible rather than expect the vast majority of the population to tip toe around you.

But it’s not a cold. Who is going to work with chicken pox? You’d be sent home where I work- no excuses!

Cantgetausername87 · 29/07/2025 18:30

I really don't think it's the worse thing unless she was coming into close contact with people (seems unlikely if nipping to the shop!)

Jumpthewaves · 29/07/2025 18:28

Mrsttcno1 · 29/07/2025 16:25

You don’t need a delivery slot at a supermarket to get food thanks to Uber, Amazon etc in most places you could get the basics from a corner shop via Uber so yeah, it’s selfish.

There’s not a chance in 2025 she had absolutely no choice but to go into a shop!

Lots of these don't exist in my area and were only semi-rural so I imagine its similar for others. We can get normal supermarket slots, but usually at least three days in advance.
