Things that most people can do and I can't

billycat321 · 28/07/2025 11:38

I can't-
Send or receive texts (don't have a mobile phone)
Change a wheel
Do self service at checkouts
Do 'pay at pump' at petrol stations
But I can-
Grow potatoes
Darn a hole in the elbow of a jumper
Sing the tenor part of The Messiah
Make and repair clothes
Embroider

Anyone else not quite fit into the 21st century?

Anyone else not quite fit into the 21st century?

Do you mean you choose not to do those things?

Headfullofbees · 28/07/2025 14:21

I can't sit crossed legged for more than a minute, or sit in a squat position without support. I'm working on both, they're on my 'things to do before 40' list.

I can...needle felt, knit, use a sewing machine, understand German.

Different category for things you can't do anymore? I used to be able to read music but lost the skill through lack of practice.

Notimeforaname · 28/07/2025 14:20

Well you CAN send a text message. You just choose not to.

Same. I’ll never deliberately leave myself in a situation where I can’t access the technology needed to function in society. My grandmother is 93 and manages to send texts, email from her ipad, pay bills online, use self checkouts etc, because she’s made sure that she can.

Amazing. Good for her!

Getting older and being left behind by technology scares the crap out of me. First it’s that you don’t listen to radio one anymore, then before you know it you’re too scared to try things like scan as you shop or the internet. Gah. So help me, I will not be that person.

So true. I have told my young adult children that if I ever start saying I can’t do something technological and ask them to do it for me, they must refuse and teach me patiently. I too am terrified of being left behind one day.

At the moment I I’m in my 50s and capable, but I do not want future developments to leave me behind so I am helpless like my parents.

NegroniMacaroni · 28/07/2025 14:17
  • I can't hear/understand lyrics
  • I can't follow or remember dance instructions / timings AT ALL
  • I can gracefully execute synchronised swimming moves - however I cannot synchronise with others : ((
  • I can hold a basic conversation in Italian even though I've never learned the language
blackbunny · 28/07/2025 14:15

I can’t -
do a handstand or the splits
whistle
knit
sew

but I can-
swim breast stroke and front crawl to ASA standard
complete an official form with no stress
guess the time without a click to within 5 minutes

ConnieHeart · 28/07/2025 14:12

I can play the piano by ear. If I hear a song I can usually play the melody

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 28/07/2025 14:11

To be fair to OP -

I work in a supermarket. I run the self service tills in our shop, as in I am in charge of them; of resetting their scales when they error out, sorting out payments and helping customers to use them when they can't find where to put their card/cash/shopping/bag etc.

But I struggle to use the self serve tills in other shops. Everything is in a different place, I don't have a key to over ride the scale or to cancel the payment and start again. I am easily flustered and put stuff in the wrong place or can't find the barcode scanner. So I usually choose not to use the self serves in any other shop. Despite knowing EXACTLY how they work and what to do...

twobabiesandapup · 28/07/2025 14:09

I can’t ride a bike but I’m bloody good with DIY and using a power drill!

Tallyho15 · 28/07/2025 14:06

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/07/2025 12:26

I can’t click my fingers of my left hand, only my right.. And I’m left handed!

I can’t click my fingers at all on either hand

NancyJoan · 28/07/2025 14:03

I cannot:
ride a bike
learn choreography

I can:
Sight sing
Recall complete conversations, inc accent, as though I am running a recording through in my head

JoshLymanSwagger · 28/07/2025 14:03

I can't ride a bicycle.
I can't swallow tablets without nearly choking.
I can't crochet.
I can't swim.
I can't remember much of my childhood.
I can't complete a Rubiks Cube.

I can change the wheel of a car/check tyre pressures/oil and replace bulbs/wiper blades.
I can map read and remember my route to somewhere miles away after one visit.
I can build really complicated lego with barely a glance at any instructions.
I can picture floor plans of buildings in 3d in my head.
I can knit and cross stitch.
I can complete a jigsaw without the box lid/image.

Sorry, but I think if you can log into MN and start this thread, you can do self service and etc.

This! If you’re on social media you’re probably able to send a text or pay at the pump. It kind of feels as though you’re trying too hard to be different.

ConnieHeart · 28/07/2025 13:55

TheOriginalEmu · 28/07/2025 13:22

Ah that’s because I stole all the ‘remembering song lyrics’ brain cells. I only have to hear a song once or twice and it’s in my brain for life.
this is an utterly useless skill, because I can’t sing, and it means I have no room in my brain for things like where I left my keys, if i locked the door, when the MOT is due and all the other stuff that life requires to be a functioning adult. 😂

You should go to a pub quiz that has a music round. We usually win when I go as I tend to get all or most of the music questions right. OH & his friends tackle all the other questions!

ConnieHeart · 28/07/2025 13:50

I'm very good at naming songs & artists from a sample of the lyrics or tune, from say 1985 to 2015. I also am pretty good at naming obscure people in entertainment from their picture. Yes, I'm pretty good at music & entertainment rounds in pub quizzes (but not very good at all the other rounds!)

I'm in awe.
Please explain how you know which direction you are facing by looking at a tree - and will any old tree work in any season?

Knowing the type of tree helps but everything about a tree will tell you direction. Prevailing wind will point its trunk and branches usually north east in the UK because wind usually comes from south west. Generally the south side of a tree will be much more open and with branches falling closer to the ground as the leaves are trying to catch the light, whereas on the north side they will be more pointed upwards because its reaching for the light. There are of course many nuances like hills, egdes of wooded areas, other weather patterns etc to be mindful of but there are loads of things to look for clues like roots, lichen shape and colour of leaves.

Self-serve checkouts give me the rage. I can't go through one without swearing and looking deranged.

Some of those are choice though and easy to learn. The question is why you don't want to.

TheDandyLion · 28/07/2025 11:55

Things I've tried but can't do - whistle, knit, cook rice, climb ladders, headstands.

Things I can do - rebuild car engine, draft clothing patterns, know which direction I am facing by looking at a tree.

I'm in awe.

Criteria16 · 28/07/2025 13:29

I can't:

  • skate (tried so many times, both roller and ice - useless)
  • make straight lines (think when you sow seeds in a veg patch, sew hems, measure things,...)
  • remember movies (my memory seems to be extremely short term for movies!)
  • ride a motorbike
  • ride a horse (well, never tried)
I can:
  • drive cars everywhere in the world, right or left-handed, on right or left sides of roads, manual or automatic, all types of roads
  • ride a bike
  • swim in pools or open water
  • scuba dive
  • speak several languages
  • ski
  • ride a jet ski
TheOriginalEmu · 28/07/2025 13:24

I can’t -
walk
wear a pair of shoes
be in a relationship

I can-
play piano to a high standard
write with either hand
