Do 'pay at pump' at petrol stations
But I can-
Grow potatoes
Darn a hole in the elbow of a jumper
Sing the tenor part of The Messiah
Make and repair clothes
Embroider

People are so shocked ha ha, I might just put some down in the corner of then garden then and hope for the best - looks like Im overthinking it

Yes, let's both do that and see how it goes! Someone's jaw actually dropped the other day when I told them I couldn't grow it Grin

I can't grow mint either, which people are always shocked about, but a professional gardener friend recently told me that it hates being contained and will just sulk, even in a big pot or planter.
I think I'm going to let some loose in my garden and all the other plants will just have to fight with it if it comes to it! I love using it in cooking and hate when I buy a bunch, use a little bit, forget about the rest and then have to throw it away.

Another one here who can't ride a bike.

I can't drive a car either, at least not well (or legally, I gave up attempting to pass my test...)!

I also struggle to use tin openers and to follow multi-step directions. I'm generally a bit clumsy. All of this stuff seems related and I've long suspected dyspraxia.

Makes me.sound utterly useless but I can do most other normal things just fine!

Not sure I have any surprising talents. I am excellent at cooking without a recipe and making meals out of whatever random ingredients are to hand...

popcornpower2025 · 28/07/2025 15:37

Not entirely sure what your point is op, you don't fit in to the 21st c because you know how to sew, essentially. Potatoes are very easy to grow, really not a skill. And you've managed to use some kind of device to post on MN so not using self service or pay at pump is more of a won't do than a can't do

I’m going to have a look around I recently finished cancer treatment after a gnarly year that included losing a leg and the hideousness of chemo and radiation, so I definitely need some fun in my life!

Have a look at "Disco Bingo" it was a separate company that came out to the pub to run it, its was a really good night & seemed to attract people that just want a good chilled, fun night

Im sorry you've had an awful time 🌺

Things I cant do

  • Have a conversation over the phone - I have hearing loss so any phone calls need to be done over text relay which is painfully slow for all those involved so I avoid unless completely necessary.
  • Use drive throughs (for the same reason above)
  • Grow mint - everyone I know struggles to contain it, after 20 years of trying I give up, which is sad as I love mint tea.
  • Take a hint - seriously just say what you mean.
  • Just start one task without getting completely overwhelmed by all the other tasks I need to do so I end up not doing anything.

Things I can do:

  • Grow anything from seed (apart from mint) or take cuttings without being showed how to I just seemed to know.
  • Put flat pack furniture together without having a breakdown.
  • Lego sets - dito
  • Bump start a car when the battery has died.
  • Siphon water using a hose

I can’t make that clic clic noise that tells a horse to move

Well I suppose go out without my wheelchair is the obvious thing for me. Though the huge advantage of modern times is that my accessible vehicle and hoist mean I can go out independently, which I would not have been able to do a generation earlier.

I can’t install software on a computer or do lots of computer based things. DH is a computer nerd and was forever fixing his friends computers early in our relationship. I just felt if I got something wrong I was making more work for him so safer to let him do it right in the first place. After twenty years of marriage I’m quite embarrassed by how useless I am.

I can’t barbecue. Again, DH is good at it so it’s easier to let him. I realise I am calling my feminist credentials into question here. He also takes care of the money.

I do make the best Yorkshire puddings though. And meringues. I get loads of compliments by people who are convinced they’re difficult, but they’re just so easy I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t make them.

I am also really good at maths, which a lot of people seem to struggle with. I’m rubbish a languages though.

I’m rubbish at maths. Completely and utterly clueless. I get anxious even thinking about it!
But I can do languages! Pop me in a country for a couple of weeks and I’ll pick it up!

Unorganisedchaos2 · 28/07/2025 15:29

Parallel park, I Iearnt to pass my test but I have never done since. People that can I hold in very high regard - that stuff if magic 😅

Jujujudo · 28/07/2025 15:27

I can’t cook edible food.. seriously, I follow recipes, I really try, but everything I cook is shit.
I can’t do anything involving numbers.
And recently, I can’t hear a bloody thing anyone says!!

Anyone else not quite fit into the 21st century?

You’d find it impossible to park in most towns and cities then as they all use apps now.

I can do them all (bar the singing bit-goose farting in the fog😂) I don’t value anything on your list more than anything else on your list. You seem proud of the stuff you say you can’t do?

i love a pub quiz! I should definitely do that.

You should go to a pub quiz that has a music round. We usually win when I go as I tend to get all or most of the music questions right. OH & his friends tackle all the other questions!

i love a pub quiz! I should definitely do that.

ShesTheAlbatross · 28/07/2025 15:22

I can’t blow up balloons.

Cheeky19863 · 28/07/2025 15:20

Why CANT you use a self serve checkout? Do you find it impossible to understand or are you one of the annoying people who demand to be served by a person whilst holding the queue up?

Liliwen · 28/07/2025 15:20

You could receive a text if you had a phone though. I think some of your examples are just things you don’t want to do rather than things you can’t do

BoarBrush · 28/07/2025 15:18

I can't floss my teeth, it looks so simple but just no....

SlashBeef · 28/07/2025 15:16

OP your cants are more "dont want to" surely?

PermanentTemporary · 28/07/2025 15:12

I can’t -

  • tie bows the way you’re apparently meant to
  • change spotlight bulbs
  • do a good blow dry.
I can
  • tie perfectly good bows
  • hang pictures at the right height by eye
  • grow sweet peas from seed - had never done it before but succeeded this year.
LittleBitofBread · 28/07/2025 15:07

I'm not sure most people can do this, but I can't whistle through my fingers. I tried doing it when I had a hand injury and couldn't applaud at the theatre etc, but I just can't do it.

Can't get my heels to come to the ground if I'm doing a yoga downward dog or squat. Teachers who don't know me well have thought that I'm deliberately raising my heels! I guess I just must have short tendons in my legs or something. Again, not sure most people can do this, but you do see an awful lot of pictures of people performing these poses with their heels on the ground.

I can't roll my tongue, but I know that's genetic.
Can't roll my r's either, which is a source of some sadness.

LittleBitofBread · 28/07/2025 15:04

TaupeLemur · 28/07/2025 11:52

You think most people can sing the tenor part of The Messiah? And your including women, boys and girls in that ‘most people’ who can????

Try reading the OP again. It's perfectly clear.

DustyMaiden · 28/07/2025 14:27
